Most samples are diluted to about 1% in KBr prior to analysis. Other powdered samples, where one looks for minor components (cement, coal, or soil samples), are often run neat. The accessory features large, high efficiency, downwardlooking optics. Its advantages include high throughput, constant optical path with all mirrors positioned above the sampling area. This is a significant design feature which protects all the optical components of the accessory against spills and corrosion often caused by KBr/sample mixes. It also makes cleanup much easier, as accidental spills can be simply swept out of the bottom of the accessory with a soft brush. The large, efficient optical design of the DiffusIR accommodates the optional PIKE Technologies Heat Chambers for studying the effects of temperature, reaction mechanisms and catalysts. The optional heat chambers are easily inserted and removed using push lock pins for toolless insertion and removal of samples. PIKE Technologies heat chambers are available in 500 °C and 900 °C versions. An optional high pressure adaption enables pressurized measurements to 1,500 psi. The front panel of the DiffusIR is easily changed to accommodate standard sampling cups or the pinned position heated chambers. PIKE Technologies TempPRO software provides a graphical user interface for the advanced digital version of the temperature controllers for the optional heated chambers. Experiments can be automated to provide data collection at specified temperature or time. This permanent mirror positioning is one of the major differences between the DiffusIR and other diffuse reflectance accessories which require readjustment of the main optics for sample placement. With the DiffusIR, sample introduction is performed using an integral precision slide. The sample position may be optimized further using a micrometer sample focusing adjustment. In this manner the sensitivity of the accessory is maximized without sacrificing precision. The DiffusIR comes equipped with a Sample Preparation and Loading Kit and a Sample Abrasion Kit for the analysis of intractable samples. The DiffusIR optics is enclosed and equipped with purge tubes for the elimination of atmospheric interferences from mid-IR spectra. A special version of the DiffusIR with gold-coated optics is available for maximum mid-IR performance and for NIR diffuse reflectance sampling.
