Message from the Headmistress and Chair of the Board of Governors
Welcome to Elmwood’s fourth Report to
the Community. What began as an effort
to track our progress against our Strategic
Plan has developed into a mature publication
communicating the school’s successes
and continuous development to our many
stakeholders. Putting together this report
is always such a pleasure because it is so
gratifying to see just how much the school
has grown over the past year.
The 2012 – 13 school year was a very positive one for Elmwood.
We have continued to implement our Strategic Plan and, pleasingly,
we are getting close to achieving all the objectives we set out to
accomplish back in 2009. In fact, we have made so much progress
over the past three years that we will finish the current strategic
plan a little earlier than was anticipated. Therefore, we have begun
the process to develop our next strategic plan. These are very
exciting times for our school!
You will see that we continue to use the four pillars of the plan
(Academic Quality and Teaching Excellence, Exceptional Student
Experience, Strong and Supportive Community and Sustainability
for Future Generations) to structure our report on the School’s
achievements. This framework has been instrumental in helping
Elmwood’s leadership team work together with our teachers
and staff, as well as the Elmwood Board and broader Elmwood
community to develop and advance new initiatives to achieve the
strategic vision and goals of the plan. This framework also allows us
to measure our year-on-year progress against the plan.
Our Report to the Community also contains information on the
work of the Board of Governors and its committees. The Board
had five active committees and three task forces this year and it is
through these groups that the Board guides the School’s long-term
vision and plans. We appreciate the time, commitment, expertise
and wisdom our Board and Committee members share with
Elmwood.
Our Report also contains our annual donor listing. The
philanthropic support we receive each year is the key to our
continued development as an educational institution. We know our
students, parents and alumni believe that we are the best school in
the world. The support we receive from our donors ensures that we
continue to be the premier school for girls. We are truly grateful to
all those who support our vision.
In closing, we wish to express our sincere appreciation to our
students and to our dedicated faculty and staff for all they do to
make our school such a special place. We also appreciate everything
that our incredible parent community does to support Elmwood.
It has been a rewarding experience working together with you, the
members of our community, in fulfilling our mission of inspiring
each girl to reach her full potential.
Onward and upward!
The Elmwood Board of Governors is
entrusted to be the guardian of the School’s
mission—“Inspiring each girl to reach her
full potential.” I am very proud of the Board’s
visionary leadership and strong commitment
to Elmwood, and would like to extend my
personal gratitude to all Board members
for generously volunteering their time and
talents to help Elmwood continue to thrive.
The Board works closely with the school, and
in particular, with the Headmistress and the senior management
team to develop the school’s strategic plan. It provides oversight
with respect to the implementation of that plan to help to ensure
Elmwood remains Ottawa’s premier school for girls.
This year, the school received a resounding validation from a
team of assessors from the Canadian Association of Independent
Schools. These independent reviews are done once every seven
years. There were two quotes in the report that certainly bear
repeating:
“Elmwood is commended for its positive, engaging and nurturing
learning environment, which is committed to each student’s
success and to its continuous improvement as a community of
learners,” and “Elmwood strives to be an excellent small school
and the spirit of its closely-knit community is felt in the hallways
and is seen in the caring interactions between students, faculty,
staff and parents.”
This kind of glowing review doesn’t just happen; it reflects a lot
of hard work to achieve a clear and far-sighted vision for the school.
Mrs. Boughton is, of course, key to this very positive outcome and
on behalf of the Board and our entire community, I would like to
thank her for her excellent leadership and outstanding commitment
to Elmwood.
As you will see on the following pages, this was another
impressive year for our students —full of triumphs both in and
out of the classroom. As always, the all-around achievement
of our students was supported by the outstanding efforts of
Elmwood’s teachers, staff and the senior leadership team. Their
unflagging commitment to providing the best education and
classroom experience for our girls, together with their significant
and enthusiastic participation in and leadership of co-curricular
activities, is truly a source of inspiration. I know I speak for all
Elmwood families in expressing my gratitude for their contribution
to the Elmwood experience —academic excellence in an
environment that challenges, nurtures and empowers our girls.
Congratulations to all for an excellent year!
21st-Century Learning at Elmwood—
Ahead of the Curve
Since its foundation in 1915, Elmwood School has been at the
forefront of teaching and learning. Starting with our founding
Headmistress Theodora Philpot, our motto Summa Summarum,
highest of the high, has always articulated the School’s goal
for each student: to be the best she can be. As the School has
grown, generations of Elmwood teachers have worked with
these remarkable young women reach their personal goals —to
inspire them to reach their full potential. Today our Elmwood
graduates are spread across the globe making an impact on their
communities as compassionate, engaged global citizens and
confident, caring leaders.
A little over a decade ago, Elmwood made a strategic decision
to embrace technology by introducing a leading-edge laptop
program in the Senior School. This popular program has evolved
with the times and technological advances, but it remains an
integral part of an Elmwood education. Our graduates are
technologically sophisticated and this gives them an advantage
when entering the workforce.
At the laptop program’s inception, considerable classroom
renovations took place to ensure that students could make
best use of this new technology. State-of-the-art workstations
were created to ensure that students had access to power and
the computer network. Although these classrooms were highly
innovative at the time, dramatic developments and changes in
education have since taken place as a result of improvements in
technology.
Experts are predicting that we will see more educational
change in the next ten years than has happened in the
last millennium. We will see increasing use of technology,
communities of learners stretching beyond the typical
confines of the classroom and increased personalization and
individualization. Schools will be focused on teaching their
students 21st-century skills—defined as critical thinking and
problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication and
collaboration.
12
For this to happen, classrooms will need to be far more studentcentered
and collaborative in nature. Educational spaces need
to be flexible, while still facilitating technological connectivity.
The best-designed learning environments around the globe
encourage participation, engagement and promote higher-order
thinking skills.
The majority of classrooms predate this educational revolution.
They were built at a time when the primary mode of course
delivery was via lecture. This pedagogical style is typically
focused on the “front” of a classroom—writing surfaces (e.g.,
whiteboards), a presentation screen, and a stage or lectern—with
little or no integration of participatory technologies that enable
collaboration to support student-centered learning.
We are creating a new learning environment at Elmwood that
brings together research on best practices in education and
technology. We have designed enhanced, leading-edge learning
spaces—flexible classrooms—that will ensure our students
have the greatest chance at reaching new frontiers in a world
characterized by rapid change and global interdependence.
These highly adaptable classrooms can be reconfigured in many
ways in a matter of minutes in order to accommodate many
teaching and learning styles. This enriched learning environment
will encourage greater student participation, engagement and
promote higher-order thinking skills.
Our transformed classrooms include:
• Interactive projectors, which connect wirelessly to a host of
multimedia devices including laptops, iPads and iPhones
• Innovative flexible furniture from VS Furniture informed by
the latest in brain research. This furniture improves student
engagement and focus while also allowing teachers to
reconfigure their rooms quickly and safely
• Walls painted with IdeaPaint, giving students the space they
need to collaborate, interact and fully explore their creativity.
The proceeds from the Field to Fancy fundraiser and the 2013
Gala’s philanthropic initiative funded a number of new flexible
classrooms. Thank you to all of the donors who supported this
initiative.
• The task force was formed to lay the groundwork for active alumni
participation in the 2015 – 16 Elmwood Centennial. The task force
concluded that the School must develop strategies to collect
alumni information and better engage alumni, as well as promote
future participation and loyalty to current Senior School students.
• A “100 Nights” dinner for Grade 12 graduating students was held
to create excitement about graduation and formally introduce
and welcome graduates to the Alumni Association.
• The committee re-engaged an important stakeholder group
through a coffee morning for former faculty.
• The Task Force recommended the following strategies:
• Maintain and develop high quality alumni events.
• Support the ongoing development and growth of the
Alumni Association through the engagement of current
members and integration of new ones.
• Develop a three-year alumni communications plan.
• Align alumni relations and admissions to capitalize on
opportunities.
• Create alumni specific fundraising strategies.
• Re-invigorate the class list project.
• Create an annual survey of alumni.
• Determine the School’s needs regarding volunteers,
communicate opportunities and provide a high-quality
experience.
• Build a base of philanthropic support by providing a
positive transition from student to alumna.
For several years now, Elmwood School has made it a priority
to reduce the tuition barrier for outstanding students whose
family may not otherwise be in a financial position to send their
daughter to Elmwood. With the philanthropic support of donors,
we have been able to attract extraordinary young women to
Elmwood and offer an Elmwood education to these deserving
individuals. In return, we have also benefitted from having these
fine students as members of our school community, and Melani
Anantharajamuthaly is no exception.
In 2009, after hearing Mrs. Boughton speak about our school
and the possibility of a scholarship on a local radio show, Anan
Thurairajah, Melani’s father, called our admissions office to
inquire about Elmwood for his daughter, and it was from that
moment forward that the application process for Melani to attend
Elmwood began. Over the next few months, Melani successfully
completed the application and scholarship process, where we
had the chance to learn more about her and her family. During
her interview, Melani spoke of her passion for the Arts, as well
as her enjoyment of math and science. Her drive, determination,
and go-getter personality came through from the onset. In the
early spring of 2010 we were able to offer Melani a spot for Grade
9 thanks to the kindness and generosity of a donor and our
scholarship program.
Melani came to us from Mother Teresa Intermediate School,
where she was a top student. Melani’s track record for academic
excellence has continued to flourish while at Elmwood. Melani is
a full IB Diploma candidate, and her post-secondary education
goals include possibly a degree in mechanical engineering,
and further pursuing a degree in forensic science or forensic
engineering.
This past summer, Melani spent part of her time working with
the Ottawa Police Department through their Youth in Policing
Initiative. She was one of 36 students out of 300 applicants who
landed this job, giving Melani an opportunity to work hand in
hand with the Fraud Section of the Department. As part of the
program, Melani also had the opportunity to volunteer with the
Ottawa Boys and Girls Club where she learned plenty about
working with at-risk children and motivating them to be the best
person they can be in this community.
With the 2013 – 14 school year just getting underway Melani
is looking forward to forward to wearing the traditional Grade 12
burgundy sweater and being a role model for others. As usual,
she intends to continue to be involved in school life and we are
quite confident that she will be on the stage at Coffee House or at
International Night, ensuring her final year is fulfilling not only
academically, but in the many aspects she treasures most.
As with all Grade 12 students, the final year of high school is
busy at so many levels. But we are assured when Melani makes
her trek each day from Barrhaven to Elmwood, she is doing so
because she is serious about her education, she has set goals for
her future, she is committed to her community, and she is grateful
for the opportunity of an Elmwood education.
Melani is excited to participate in International
Night celebrations each year.
Report to the Community > 2012 – 2013
Thank you to our many Elmwood stakeholders – parents,
alumni, staff, faculty, former parents and grandparents – your
contributions made a tremendous difference. Donations were
received through the Annual Campaign, the Gala and several
Major Gift Initiatives totaling over $657,586!
As a registered charity Elmwood School seeks contributions
each year to enhance the educational experience for our students.
Tuition fees alone do not cover the costs of educating each student
and, therefore, philanthropic support plays a vital role.
Our Culture of Philanthropy
Philanthropy has been part of the Elmwood School fabric since
its founding almost 100 years ago. Today, the impact of donations
can be seen throughout the School. We are pleased to highlight
our 2012 – 2013 outcomes.
Annual Campaign
This is Elmwood’s most important annual fundraiser, reaching out
to all those connected with the School. Parents, alumni, former
parents, faculty, staff and friends are all asked to participate. Our
overall contributions and participation rates continue to increase
each year!
• $287,184 raised – a 27% increase over last year
• 100% Board participation
• 82% faculty and staff participation
• 55% parent participation
• 26% of donors contributed at a “Giving Club” level
($1,000 and greater)
