CEILINGS: GTEC Direct to Timber Standard Installation 1. Fix noggings around the ceiling perimeter and, if required, to support any board edges not already supported by joists. Joists and noggings must have a bearing face width of at least 44mm. A bearing face width of 38mm is permissible in the case of trussed rafters manufactured to BS 5268 : Part 3 : 1985. When using GTEC boards, provide noggings to support all board edges. For two-layer boarding, position the noggings to suit the second (outer) layer. 2. Offer up plasterboards with their paper bound (long) edges at right angles to the joists. Butt board edges lightly against each other with maximum allowable gap of 3mm. (A 3mm gap is always required with GTEC Lath to allow for keying of the plaster, and with GTEC Standard Board using a textured finish). Working from the centre of each board, fix with screws at 230mm centres, and 150mm centres at perimeter and the cut ends of board. Fixings should be no closer than 10mm to the bound edges and 13mm to the cut edges of the boards. The fixings should also be at least 6mm in from edges of timber framing. Stagger joints between cut (short) edges and centre over joists or noggings. With two-layer boarding, stagger joints and fixings between layers. Plasterboard Selection and Finishing For direct decoration, textured finishing or skim coat plastering, apply plasterboard with the decorating face exposed. Use tapered edge plasterboard for a flush finish (direct decoration) and square edge plasterboard for a textured finish and skim coat plaster. Where there may be risk of interstitial condensation, use GTEC Vapour Board as the inner layer of the ceiling, with the metallised film facing the joists. In ceilings incorporating GTEC Fire Board, it must always be used as the outer. Screw lengths required when fixing plasterboard to GTEC Resilient Bar Deep using GTEC Self Tapping screws. When GTEC Resilient Bar Deep is required to achieve added acoustic performance, fix the bars at right angles to the joists at 450mm maximum centres, 400mm for 2400mm plasterboard, through pre-punched holes in the flange using 32mm GTEC High Thread screws. Set out the GTEC Resilient Bars as close as possible to the room perimeter. To ensure maximum sound insulation is maintained, do not let the GTEC Resilient Bars touch the perimeter wall. Joint the bars by overlapping directly over joists, with a minimum 200mm overlap. GTEC Self Tapping screws GTEC High Thread screws Joist 2A. When GTEC Resilient Bars are used, fix plasterboards with long edges at right angles to Resilient Bars using GTEC Self Tapping screws. See table opposite for length of screws. For two layer boarding layouts, stagger the outer layer and fix short edges of boards to GTEC Resilient Bars.
