(The Treatise of the Spirit of Holiness)<br />

Written in 600 in Makkah for Shaykh <strong>al</strong>-Mahdaw┘, it is one of the best sources for our<br />

knowledge of <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Arab┘’s life in And<strong>al</strong>usia and the people he knew. It contains three<br />

sections: a complaint about the lack of comprehension of many people practicing the Sufi<br />

Way, a series of biographic<strong>al</strong> sketches of some fifty-five Sufis in the West and a discussion of<br />

difficulties and obstacles encountered on the Way.<br />

(The Crown of Epistles)<br />

Written in 600 in Makkah, it consists of eight love letters composed for the Ka‘ba,<br />

each one corresponding to a self-disclosure (Taj<strong>al</strong>l┘) of a Divine Name which appeared in the<br />

course of the ritu<strong>al</strong> circumambulations.<br />

Kit┐b <strong>al</strong>-Alif, Kit┐b <strong>al</strong>-B┐', Kit┐b <strong>al</strong>-Y┐'<br />

A series of short works, using an <strong>al</strong>phabetic<strong>al</strong> numbering system, begun in<br />

Jerus<strong>al</strong>em in 601 and composed over three years or more. They discuss a range of different<br />

Divine principles, such as Oneness Compassion and Light.<br />

Tanazzul┐t t <strong>al</strong>-Maw<br />

Maw╖iliyya<br />

(Descents of Revelation at Mosul)<br />

Written in April 601 in Mosul, it describes the esoteric secrets of the acts of worship<br />

in terms of ablution and Prayer, and how each phase of this everyday ritu<strong>al</strong> is imbued with<br />

meaning.<br />

Kit┐b <strong>al</strong>-J<strong>al</strong><br />

J<strong>al</strong>┐l l wa'I-Jam<br />

Jam┐l (The Book of Majesty and Beauty)<br />

Written in the space of one day in 601 in Mosul, it discusses various Quranic verses<br />

in terms of two apparently opposing aspects, Majesty and Beauty.<br />
