Vision Statement
Incarnation Parish is a Roman Catholic community
centered around the Lord Jesus, a living sign of
hope to all that the Word made flesh dwells
among us. His presence and love is encountered
in all areas of our life together, especially in the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in Sacred Scripture and
in the Sacraments. We seek to make the Lord's
presence and love known through service and education,
through evangelization and through continual
conversion and renewal in Him. We entrust
our life together and our sharing in the mission of
Christ to the protection and intercession of Mary,
Mother of the Lord and our Mother.
WHOEVER LOVES ME WILL KEEP MY WORD,
AND MY FATHER WILL LOVE HIM, AND WE WILL COME TO HIM
FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN
One of my favorite Marian hymns is “On this Day, O Beautiful Mother.” It’s an old English hymn
from the 1800’s. I was introduced to it as a choir boy in my home parish and it has still made its way into our
Breaking Bread Book. Besides the lovely melody, the refrain basically says that we just want to be near
Mary: “Near thee, Madonna, fondly we hover.” While none of us speak that way, I think so many of us echo
that precise sentiment.
As we celebrate Mothers’ Day this weekend I certainly think of my own mother who died way too
early in life. But I also think of the Mother given us all as Christ hung on the Cross. She is my mother too!
She is our mother!. Oftentimes our Protestant brothers and sisters misunderstand the place of Mary in our
history. It’s not that Mary is divine (she’s not) but rather that she is our Mother that makes her so dear to the
Christian Faithful through two millennia.
Mothers are life-giving, nurturing, caring and loving. They challenge and assist us throughout our
lives. They smother us with love and affection, and let us go so we can learn and mature on our own.
Oftentimes they were the pillar of faith in each family and the glue that held things together out of love.
While they might have taught us to make the sign of the cross or to say our first prayers, they definitely taught
us about Sacrificial Love. The Love that mirrors Christ’s Love on the Cross. Most people spent tremendous
time with their mothers while growing up and never really leave them once they have become adults
themselves.
It’s fitting that we lavish our affection on them as we remember and honor them today! The Mothers’
Day Novena of Masses begins with 9AM Mass and they will be remembered all throughout the month. But
let us not forget our own Blessed Mother as well. She is life-giving, nurturing, caring and loving! I could go
on. How much time do we spend with her Do we still hover near her as that old English hymn might say
Do we find ourselves trying to be near her in the same manner a child might get underfoot in the kitchen or
yard just because that child wants to be close to mom
For some to be near Mary might mean the recitation of the Rosary or other Marian themed prayers that
seem, at first, to focus on her. What I think is more important is to do everything with her: our prayers to her
Son, our watching out for our brothers and sisters, simply enjoying life.
If you asked the child in the kitchen or the yard what she or he was doing, the response would be
cooking or gardening. That might be true but they were doing it WITH mom! “Near thee, Madonna, fondly
we hover:” may we always find ourselves close to our mothers and our Mother.
To all the daughters, sons and husbands out there: Happy Mothers’ Day!
