An Empirical Phenomenological Psychological Study <strong>of</strong> Farmer-herdsmen Conflicts <strong>in</strong><br />

North-Central Nigeria<br />

category. The categories are brought toge<strong>the</strong>r, summarized<br />

and discussed <strong>in</strong> four <strong>the</strong>mes namely: Perceived causes <strong>of</strong><br />

conflicts, Conflict experiences, Reactions to conflict, and<br />

Management <strong>of</strong> conflict situations.<br />

Frustration (22MUs – 18 for farmers, 4 for herdsmen)<br />

Respondents, particularly farmers, expressed<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g frustration as a result <strong>of</strong> ‘constant’ destruction <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir farms by ‘Fulani men’.<br />

Example: -- ‘It is really devastat<strong>in</strong>g year <strong>in</strong> year out….’/--<br />

‘How can I be farm<strong>in</strong>g for cattlemen’/-- ‘Do <strong>the</strong>y want to<br />

stop us from farm<strong>in</strong>g’/-- ‘I am left with noth<strong>in</strong>g from my<br />

farm this year. How do I fend for my family Should I go and<br />

steal’/-- ‘Last year <strong>the</strong>y (cattle herdsmen) nearly killed two<br />

<strong>of</strong> my sons after destroy<strong>in</strong>g my farms. What did we do for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m’/ A herdsman with a very large herd <strong>of</strong> cattle<br />

exclaimed ‘…… We are overwhelmed by scarcity <strong>of</strong> fodder<br />

for our cattle’. Ano<strong>the</strong>r young herdsman said: ‘We now<br />

undergo greater stress before gett<strong>in</strong>g grass and water for our<br />

animals. It is now very rigorous….’/ -- ‘The job <strong>of</strong> cattle<br />

herd<strong>in</strong>g has become more demand<strong>in</strong>g and stressful….. It is<br />

frustrat<strong>in</strong>g as well…’<br />

Accusations and Counter-accusations (18MUs – 15 for<br />

farmers, 3 for herdsmen)<br />

Mutual accusations and counter-accusations were<br />

prevalent among both groups. Farmers blamed herdsmen for<br />

farm destruction by cattle, while herdsmen blame farmers<br />

for farm<strong>in</strong>g on lands that were hi<strong>the</strong>rto not cultivated, and<br />

probably not meant for farm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Example: ‘...These herdsmen are wicked, evil people….’/--<br />

‘The Fulani are ungodly by deliberately tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir cattle to<br />

my two farms every year’/--‘The herdsmen are not farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir stock routes’/--‘They lie by say<strong>in</strong>g our farms are<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir stock routes,… you saw my farm yesterday, is it<br />

along <strong>the</strong>ir stock routes’/--‘Even if <strong>the</strong>y encounter farms<br />

along <strong>the</strong>ir routes, does it make any sense for <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

destroy farms that took a lot <strong>of</strong> money and sweat to<br />

establish. Also, among herdsmen: ‘…how should farmers<br />
