Letter to the
Editor
Dear Editor:
I was very disappointed to
hear that we are switching to
automated garbage collection.
In reading the article I found
lots of numbers, and I like
math.
The math indicated that the
four positions cost $79,500
each to replace, while the five
positions retained cost about
$63,000 each. Now I figure
that the job of picking the can
up and putting it in the
garbage truck should be a $12-
$15 per hour position. Figuring
in generous benefits
translates to no more than
$45,000 per year. This big
savings of $79,500 per worker
was used to justify switching
the service.
Also, the article worked
out that the city was paying
about $16 per year to rent each
garbage can and each house
would be given one can. This
would be a seven year lease,
so each can would cost more
than $100.
The city says don’t worry,
put out as much trash as you
want and we will send a nonautomated
truck to come get
it. You will just have to call us
first. Now that I refuse to believe.
Lastly, we seem to be an
affluent city and we certainly
approved the garbage levy, yet
we are proud to eliminate four
jobs. This kind of fuzzy math
is just garbage.
Governor announces transportation plan
Ohio Turnpike to remain public, independent
After more than a year of
contentious debate regarding
the future of the Ohio
Turnpike, officials have proposed
a solution that may
satisfy all concerned parties.
Last year, Ohio Governor
John Kasich proposed either
leasing the toll road in an effort
to raise additional funds
for Ohio’s infrastructure and
highway system or shifting
turnpike control over to the
Ohio Department of Transportation.
The governor’s proposal
met with vehement opposition
by residents, turnpike
employees and local government
officials throughout
the northern quadrant of
Ohio.
The state commissioned
a $3.5 million study to determine
the feasibility of the
proposal or offer other recommendations.
On December 13, the
governor, ODOT director
Jerry Wray and turnpike director
Rick Hodges unveiled
a plan to generate approximately
$3 billion for Ohio
road construction without
leasing the toll road or putting
it in ODOT’s hands.
The proposal, known as
the Ohio Jobs and Transportation
Plan, calls for the
Ohio Turnpike Commission
to issue bonds backed by future
toll revenues. The plan
would generate $1.5 billion
in new funds for Ohio highways
and could result in an
additional $1.5 billion in
matching local and federal
funds.
“This plan just makes
sense as we continue Ohio’s
economic resurgence, grow
jobs and make our state
prosperous once again,” said
Governor Kasich. “Billions
of dollars in new highway
funds further strengthen
Ohio’s jobs-friendly climate
and keep our state moving
by delivering more projects
faster.”
Mr. Wray believes that
bonding against future turnpike
revenue will generate
enough money to erase the
policy
The weekly deadline
for Letters to the Editor is
from the same writer will
submitted with the author’s
and daytime telephone
highway budget deficit.
In recent years ODOT
has struggled with lower
revenues, created in part by
the declining economy.
Fuel-efficient vehicles also
resulted in less state motor
fuel tax revenue. As a result
ODOT officials were forced
to push back some of the
state’s largest transportation
construction projects.
“Combined with
ODOT’s work to reduce our
cost of doing business and
improve service to the
state’s motoring public, this
plan puts the resources we
need into our major construction
budget,” said Mr.
Wray.
Mr. Hodges also approves
of the plan, “Maintaining
public control and an
independent turnpike commission
helps keep tolls low
and workers on the job.”
Highlights of the plan include:
•No long-term, private
lease;
•A continued public, independent
turnpike with expanded
authority and
renamed the Ohio Turnpike
and Infrastructure Commission;
•More than 90 percent of
new bond money going directly
to northern Ohio
highway projects, including
the turnpike itself;
•Rebuilding the Ohio
Turnpike decades sooner
than planned;
•Tolls for local trips paid
using EZ Pass will be frozen
for 10 years;
•Other toll rates to be
capped at inflation, and
•No turnpike employee
layoffs anticipated.
The Wood County commissioners,
originally
among local officials opposed
to the leasing option,
expressed approval of the
new plan. “I am pleased that
the governor has not proposed
privatization of the
turnpike,” said Commissioner
Tim Brown.
“The voice of our citizens
has been heard and
taken into account, and I
hope that will continue
throughout the process,” he
added.
The commissioners were
among many officials
throughout northern Ohio to
weigh in on the governor’s
proposal. Mayors from
Toledo, Streetsboro,
Strongsville, Cuyahoga
Falls, North Ridgeville and
Cleveland voiced approval.
Toledo Mayor Mike Bell
called it a “win-win-win”
for all parties and noted that
it will benefit Toledo and its
residents.
On the other side of the
state, Cleveland Mayor
Frank Jackson agreed. “I
think it’s a good decision,
good for Cleveland, good
for northeastern Ohio.”
County commissioners
also spoke in favor of the
plan. “We appreciate the
governor’s sensitivity to our
concerns around truck diversion
and preserving the
economic competitiveness
of our area. This plan makes
sense for Ohio,” said
Williams County Commissioner
To the east Lorain
“I was glad to see
that the governor listened to
our feedback and waited before
making any decision.”
Ohio’s roads and
of the state. Such
we have an obligation to ensure
that our infrastructure
is properly funded and
maintained,” he said.
