It is far from a perfect system. It is not currently tied to the district’s strategic goals, and not designed to reward excellent teaching. The description of the plan states it “will be designed to assure that the district’s mission and strategic goals are aligned with the desired outcomes of the system. The system will have the potential to impact a substantial number of teachers. New teachers from 2012-13 and 2013-14 plus those wishing to opt in will account for approximately 25 percent of the teaching staff participating in the pilot year.” Ms. Norris believes that once veteran staff members see the system at work and understand how they can benefit from it, they will want to participate. The system also will have the capability to include the district’s 20 administrators. According to Ms. Norris, the initial grant request was for $325,000. Phase one–January through March 2013–includes the planning, development and marketing for the compensation plan, $125,000. Phase two–2013-14 school year–the implementation of a pilot program, $200,000. As of Monday, the district had not been notified of the total grant funding. Ms. Norris will serve as the project director. The district is currently forming a design committee to start immediately on the alternate compensation plan. Sponsored by the American Heart Association, these classes will take place throughout 2013, providing opportunities for local residents to learn life-saving skills from certified instructors. The American Heart Association’s CPR and AED learning programs are designed to help increase survival rates of those stricken by cardiac arrest. Fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR help during the critical four to six minute period after an incident. Almost 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests happen in the home, and 92 percent of victims don’t survive, often because people around them do not take action and begin CPR. Classes are limited to 20 students, and registration is required. The following classes will be offered in 2013: Family and Friends CPR, from 6 to 8 p.m. on January 16, May 15, July 17, or September 18. This is a free class, but registration at the library information desk is required. Participants may wish to buy a book for $5. This class will teach adult hands-only CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult and child AED use, infant CPR, and choking relief for all ages. Heartsaver CPR AED, Fire Division CPR coordinator Amy Allan with Lisa Richard of Way Public Library from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 27 and November 20, cost: $45 (includes book), payable when you register at the library information desk. This course is designed for anyone who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED to meet job or other requirements. Adult CPR and AED use and choking relief for adults will be taught. The course completion card is valid for two years. Heartsaver First Aid, from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 19 and October 16, cost: $45 (includes book), payable upon registration at the library. A course completion card is offered. The student will learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. CPR and First Aid for Babysitters (for 11-15 year old students), from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on February 23, March 23, June 15, July 20, October 5 and November 5; cost: $30 (includes course manuals, payable only by check at the youth services information desk). This class offers training for those who care for infants or children and would like to learn basic pediatric first aid response. Secret Service Toledo office offers holiday security tips Long lines of holiday shoppers may be a business owner’s dream, but the hustle and bustle of the season is prime time for counterfeiters to prey on both cashiers and consumers. The United States Secret Service recommends shoppers make sure they visually inspect their currency before walking away from store registers or bank tellers. “Now is the time to make sure you know your money,” said Conrad Everett, special agent in charge of Secret Service offices throughout northern Ohio. “Technology has made it easier for criminals to try to counterfeit U.S. currency, so knowing what’s real and what’s not are important steps consumers and businesses can take to protect themselves.” If a retailer or consumer suspects a bill is counterfeit, they should compare the bill to a note of the same series and denomination that is known to be genuine. The note in question should display the proper watermark, as well as the proper security thread that is consistent with that denomination. The following resources contain valuable information on how to detect counterfeit notes by identifying the security features that are embedded within U.S. currency: Know Your Money, http://www.secretservice.go v/know_your_money.shtml and www.moneyfactory.gov (Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s Web site). The U.S. Secret Service was originally founded in 1865 for the purpose of suppressing the counterfeiting of U.S. currency. Over the years it has grown into one of the premier law enforcement organizations charged with investigating financial crimes. The agency has taken a lead role in the emerging arena of cybercrime, establishing partnerships with the public and private sectors to address such issues as protection of critical infrastructure, Internet intrusions and associated fraud. Retailers and consumers also need to be mindful of criminals attempting to steal or use stolen credit cards, credit card numbers or store gift cards. Retailers should continue to actively compare credit card signatures with photo IDs, and consumers should carefully scrutinize card transactions and card statements to ensure their cards are not compromised. Area volunteers prepare for tax season at Way Volunteers will once again provide tax preparation assistance to area residents at Way Library. Area volunteers will provide free assistance to taxpayers with their 2012 federal, Ohio, and school district income tax returns. This service is sponsored by AARP and is hosted by Way Public Library. All returns are filed electronically. The volunteers’ mission is to provide high-quality, free income tax assistance and form preparation to low- and moderate-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. AARP membership is not required. Nationwide, approximately 36,000 volunteers helped more than 2.5 million customers last season at more than 6,000 sites. Most customers had household incomes of less than $50,000, and over 80 percent were age 60 or older. Area residents are encouraged to consider volunteering for the 2012 tax season. Previous experience with tax preparation services is not necessary. Volunteers need to commit to training in January, pass a competency test, and are expected to volunteer for at least four hours each week during the tax season (February 4 through April 11). Complex tax issues–including depreciation, lengthy schedule Ds, casualty losses, complex K-1s, farm income, employee business expenses over $5,000, and military returns–are beyond the scope of this service. Earned Income credits, child tax credits, unemployment benefits, child and dependent care expenses, education credits, IRA contributions, capital gains/losses, and disability income are all within the scope of this service. Taxpayers must bring picture ID, social security cards for all family members, last year’s tax return, current W2s and 1099 statements, broker tax statements plus any additional documentation they feel is pertinent. To make an appointment, call the library’s Information Desk, starting Monday, January 28, at 419-874-3135, extension 119. Beginning Monday, February 4, appointments can be scheduled by contacting the tax-preparation site (the Way Library Computer Lab) at 419-874-3135, extension 136. The site will be open Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays, from noon to 4:30 p.m.
