Agape Handbell Choir of Zoar Lutheran Church to
present its annual concert on December 22 and 23
The Agape Handbell Choir of Zoar Lutheran Church will present its annual handbell
concert on Saturday, December 22, at 6 p.m., and Sunday, December 23, at 10 a.m.
The concert/worship service will include special music, carols and skits focused on
Bethlehem and featuring the Fontanini figures in the newly refurbished Nativity display
in the sanctuary. A cookie reception will be held in the Family Life Center following the
Saturday evening program.

Perrysburg schools receives grant for alternate compensation reform

future.
“The current compensation
system in Perrysburg
and many other school districts
has many inequities.
It is far from a perfect system.
It is not currently tied
to the district’s strategic
goals, and not designed to
reward excellent teaching.
By having an opportunity
to create a new system,
educators are being given a
chance to devise a compensation
plan that respects
the individual accomplishments
of staff members.”
Ms. Norris also noted
the PEA signed a memorandum
of understanding
with the Perrysburg Board
of Education approving the
scope of work for Race to
the Top including the
implementation of a pilot
performance based compensation
system for teachers
beginning in 2013.
“However, just the mention
of a new compensation
pay may bring concern or
speculation to the forefront,”
she added. “First
and foremost, we want to
reassure teachers that current
salaries will not be
reduced as a result of this

The union and administration
have discussed this
issue, and agree on the following
principles:
•Reward quality instruction;
•Attract and retain highquality
faculty;
•Reward staff regardless
of their seniority or position;
•Use valid measurements
of student growth to
help assess staff performance;
•Foster collaboration
and teamwork in the building
and across the district,
and
•Create a plan that is
sustainable now and in the
future.
“This commitment by
our teachers’ union continues
to be strong, and we
have a dedicated group of
teachers willing to serve on
the design committee,” she
said.
The description of the
plan states it “will be
designed to assure that the
district’s mission and
strategic goals are aligned
with the desired outcomes
of the system. The system
will have the potential to
impact a substantial number
of teachers. New teachers
from 2012-13 and
2013-14 plus those wishing
to opt in will account for
approximately 25 percent
of the teaching staff participating
in the pilot year.”
Ms. Norris believes that
once veteran staff members
see the system at work and
understand how they can
benefit from it, they will
want to participate. The
system also will have the
capability to include the
district’s 20 administrators.
According to Ms. Norris,
the initial grant request
was for $325,000. Phase
one–January through
March 2013–includes the
planning, development and
marketing for the compensation
plan, $125,000.
Phase two–2013-14 school
year–the implementation of
a pilot program, $200,000.
As of Monday, the district
had not been notified
of the total grant funding.
Ms. Norris will serve as
the project director. The
district is currently forming
a design committee to
start immediately on the
alternate compensation
plan.
