Basketball team defeats defending league champs
Closed
Christmas Eve
and Christmas
Day
By Andy Brungard
The defending league
champs, Napoleon, traveled
to Perrysburg High School,
along with their University of
Toledo bound team captain
Jordan Lauf, to give the Yellow
Jackets their first true
challenge of the season. The
Jackets came into this game
with a 2-0 record, while this
was the Wildcats’ first game.
Shane Edwards led the offensive
charge for the Jackets
with 33 points followed by
Nick Moschetti with 18. The
Jackets shot the lights on in
the first half, shooting over 50
percent, which led to a 40-22
halftime lead and eventually a
72-60 victory.
Perrysburg began the
game challenging Napoleon’s
guards, applying pressure at
half court and forcing the
front court of the Wildcats to
be careless with the basketball.
The first turnover was
intercepted by Matt Kaczinski,
who passed it ahead to
Edwards who then dished to
Moschetti on the wing, who
hit a three pointer for a quick
3-0 lead.
Napoleon brought the ball
up court and threw it to Lauf,
who put it up and made a
deep three to tie the game.
The Yellow Jackets and Wildcats
went back and forth
throughout the quarter.
With three minutes remaining
in the first, Moschetti
hit a three from the corner but
was quickly matched by
Napoleon’s Blake Dunbar
with a three of his own, giving
Napoleon a 10-8 lead.
Bryant Byrd tied the game
with a break away layup.
Quinn Thomas ignited the
offense for five points with
less than a minute to play.
well beyond the three point
line, giving the Jackets a 15-
12 lead at the end of the first
quarter.
Edwards started the second
quarter with a three, and
Byrd added a post up drop
step that also sent him to the
free throw line to add one
more, extending the lead to
21-12. Lauf added a three at
the other end but Edwards
quickly matched his three
with one of his own and it
was 23-15.
The rest of the second
quarter was an Edwards and
Moshetti scoring display. The
two combined for 11 more
points, forcing Napoleon to
take timeouts to slow down
score, adding only one basket
to put Perrysburg ahead, 40-
17, with one minute remaining
in the half. In the final
minute, the Wildcats managed
to score five unanswered
points off of Perrysburg
turnovers, and the Jackets
took a 40-22 lead into the
half.
In the first half, Perrysburg
scored more points than their
total in their last game. But
starting the second half, the
offense was slowed down by
a stingy Napoleon defense.
The Wildcats came out
hungry to eliminate the large
Perrysburg lead and went on
a 10-0 run.
The Jackets did not score
a basket for the first four minutes
and 20 seconds until
Hayden Thomas knocked
down a jumper from the baseline,
giving the Jackets a 42-
32 lead. To finish the third
quarter, Napoleon and Perrysburg
each traded baskets as
Napoleon managed to cut the
deficit to nine points, 44-35
Perrysburg.
The Yellow Jackets, feeling
their lead slip away, were
sparked by an Edwards runner
along the baseline to go
on a 6-0 run and regain a double
digit lead.
Napoleon, still playing aggressive
defense, got into foul
trouble and Perrysburg took
advantage, converting nine of
10 free throws.
Lauf tried to keep the
game close, hitting another
three to add to his team high
24 points. However, Edwards
put an exclamation mark on
the win when Moschetti stole
a pass on defense and lobbed
it ahead to a streaking Edwards.
He caught the ball at
mid court and finished it with
a two handed dunk that
brought the crowd to their
feet and gave the Jackets a
65-51 lead.
The PHS win proves they
deserve a spot somewhere at
the top of the NLL. The 3-0
Jackets will face league rival
Maumee on Thursday, December
Perrysburg girls top Napoleon, stay unbeaten
By Scott Buker
Just another step closer to
their goals is how the Perrysburg
High School girls varsity
basketball team viewed their
44-11 victory over the
Napoleon Wild Cats on Tuesday,
December 11, at PHS.
The Jackets shut out the
Wild Cats, 11-0, in the second
quarter en route to a halftime
lead of 23-6 to propel them to
their fourth Northern Lakes
League victory of the season.
The Jackets currently sit at a
perfect 5-0 overall and 4-0
record in the league, while
Napoleon drops to 2-3 overall
and 1-3 in league play.
“It’s one step closer to our
goals,” said head coach Todd
Sims after the victory.
“Our goals are to win
league, go one step further in
the state tournament and have
fun–not necessarily in that
order.
The Jackets took control
of the game early in the opening
quarter. Sarah Baer broke
a 2-2 tie at the 3:52 mark that
sparked an 8-0 that pushed
the Jacket lead out to 10-2.
A Napoleon bucket with
1:23 left to play in the first
quarter cut the Jacket lead to
12-6, and the Wild Cats
would not score again until
the 2:45 mark in the third
quarter.
Coach Sims credits his
overall team athleticism to the
reason why the Jackets were
able to stifle the Napoleon offense
during the opening half.
“We have quickness and
we have all-around athleticism,”
“Defensively, we played
really well. We created a lot
“You’re going to have
some sluggish nights offensively
through the course of
20 games, but defense is all
effort and helping teammates,”
Sims further explained.
Coming back from halftime,
Perrysburg furthered
Baer, whose size and athleticism
wasn’t countered by
Napoleon. The 6’1” junior
scored eight of her 22 points
in the third quarter.
“That’s the reason she’s
such a match-up problem,”
said Coach Sims. “Every
team has a girl that’s 5’11 or
6’1”, but Sarah’s athleticism
Yellow Jackets fall to Start, 54-47
By Andy Brungard
Two short days after coming
off an emotional win and
an offensive explosion over
Napoleon, the Perrysburg
High School Yellow Jackets
were defeated by the Start
Spartans, 54-47. Perrysburg
now drops to 3-1 overall.
Start’s Michael Mitchell
dominated around the basket,
swatting many Perrysburg
shots and making it difficult
for the Jackets to score
around the basket.
Perrysburg’s Nick
Moschetti scored the first
four points of the game. His
second basket came after he
stole the ball on defense,
drove the distance of the
court and made a baseline
jumper to tie the game at
four. Halfway through the
first quarter of the game it
was tied at six all when
Shane Edwards stole the ball
it up court and dished to
The Spartans responded
with a 8-0 run and took a five
point lead until Quinn
at the buzzer to cut into the
Spartan lead and make it 14-
first.
The second quarter started
out slow with neither team
scoring in the first two minutes.
Perrysburg’s Matt
Kaczinski put the Jackets on
the board after grabbing an
offensive rebound and putting
it back in.
Start held a seven point
lead for most of the quarter
till Byrd took a defensive rebound
coast to coast for a
layup and Moschetti put in a
free throw to cut he deficit
down to four points, 20-16.
However, the Spartans
worked the ball around at the
other end of the court and
nailed a three pointer to regain
a seven point lead, 23-
16, going into halftime.
The Jackets struggled to
catch up to the Spartans lead,
only pulling within six points
with four minutes remaining
in the quarter.
Then Moschetti hit a three
pointer which was followed
by Hayden Thomas taking a
charge on the defensive side
of the court and the Jackets
were in business. They
pushed the ball up court following
the charge call and
Moschetti set up behind the
arc looking to shoot another
three. Instead he dished to
Edwards, who swished a well
contested three of his own
and Perrysburg tied the game
up at 27 and held all the momentum.
Start then answered with a
6-0 run led by leading scorers
Scott Hicks and Dexter Johnson,
who each scored 14
points in the game. The Jackets
again chipped away at the
Start lead with two H.
Thomas free throws and
Byrd, grabbing his own offensive
rebound and placing
it back in as the buzzer
sounded. The Jackets were
only down two points heading
into the final quarter.
In the beginning of the
fourth quarter Byrd grabbed
a rebound near the basket and
laid it in to tie the game at 33
all.
This however was the
closest Perrysburg came to
regaining the lead.
Start exploded on offense
and led by as many as 12, 46-
34, with four minutes remaining.
Perrysburg never quit.
They made an attempt to
catch up by stopping the
clock with fouls and pushing
the ball up court for quick
scores, but Start held on for a
seven point victory.
The leading scorers for
the Jackets were Bryant Byrd
