Page 12 — December 19, 2012 — PERRYSBURG MESSENGER JOURNAL Polar Plunge fund-raisers to benefit Special Olympics Ohio Special Olympics Ohio announces the lineup and site list for its 2013 Polar Plunge season. This popular event, held on Saturdays during January, February and March at locations throughout the state, is among the largest fund-raisers for Special Olympics Ohio. All money raised from the Polar Plunge benefits more than 23,000 Special Olympics athletes in Ohio. There are nine opportunities across Ohio this winter to participate in Special Olympic Ohio’s “Freezin’ For A Reason” Polar Plunges. The first two Plunges are scheduled for January 26. Plunge locations this day are Thirsty Pony, in Sandusky, and Caesar’s Creek, Waynesville. The following Saturday, February 2, is when Special Olympics Ohio and Special Olympics Kentucky come together for a Plunge to benefits the Special Olympics athletes of both states. This Plunge is held at Joe’s Crab Shack, in Bellevue, Kentucky. The Geneva and Genevaon-the-Lake Super Plunge is scheduled in Geneva, February 9. Also that day, Ohio University, in Athens, hosts its Plunge. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, in Powell, has its Plunge February 16. The 2013 Polar Plunge season concludes in March. Grand Lake St. Marys, in Celina, hosts its Plunge, Saturday, March 2. Mosquito Lake, in Cortland, has its Plunge March 9, while Indian Lake, Lakeview, hosts the final Plunge of the season March 16. As part of the Polar Plunge experience, participants obtain monetary pledges and then agree to jump or slowly crawl (however the case may be) into the frigid waters of an Ohio lake or waterway, or the special Polar Plunge pool, depending on location, to earn their pledges. Another opportunity to participate is “Too Chicken to Plunge.” To participate, one raises a minimum of $30 and is awarded with a “Too Chicken to Plunge” T-shirt, as well the opportunity not to Plunge. Or, teams of chickens may be formed in support of favorite Plungers. A minimum in pledges (either $50 or $75, depending on age and location) is necessary to participate. All plungers receive a T-shirt and food and non-alcoholic beverages at a Post-Plunge party. There also are incentive prizes for those who collect more than the minimum pledge. Individuals and groups are welcome to participate; personalized on-line fund-raising pages are available. The Super Plunge in Geneva-on-the-Lake involves raising a minimum $888 in pledges and Super Plungers commit to jumping in once an hour for eight hours. Also, in conjunction with the Genevaon-the-Lake Super Plunge, a raffle is held for the chance to win a 2013 (FLS Softail Slim Ember Red Sunglow with enclosed trailer) Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Special Olympics Ohio provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for adults and children with intellectual disabilities, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy as they participate in the sharing of gifts and friendship. From December 2011 through March 2012, 15,526 crashes occurred on snow, ice or slush covered roadways killing 27 people and injuring 4,529. Suggestions for limiting sugar intake during the holidays and every day I have a sweet tooth. I’ve been cutting back on sugar lately, but I’m worried about the holidays and all the extra sweets. Do you have any guidance It’s a good idea to eat less sugar–added sugar, that is. It’s estimated that Americans consume 16 percent of total calories from added sugar–the kind of sugar that’s added to foods during processing or preparation, as opposed to the type naturally found in fruit and other whole foods. That 16 percent is equal to 320 calories a day on a 2,000 calorie-a-day diet–far more than recommended. The American Heart Association suggests that women consume no more than 100 calories a day from added sugars, and men no more than 150 calories a day. The nutrition community agrees that cutting back on sugar would be a very good thing. Some experts, including the authors of a commentary published in the journal Nature in February 2012, even go so far as to call added sugars “toxic” and advocate regulating them like alcohol. Others are more moderate, saying that added sugars are just a source of needless empty calories and cutting back would help people with their weight and triglyceride levels, which increase when you eat too much sugar. In either case, you should know that overdoing it on added sugars -- or other carbohydrates, including white rice, bread and other refined grains, could cause your blood sugar to spike and then drop, possibly suddenly–and that variation in blood sugar could trigger more sugar cravings. Be aware that avoiding added sugars can be a challenge. They’re not only in cake, cookies, pie, candy and ice cream, but they’re also in many processed foods, including barbecue sauce, salad dressing, canned soup, pasta sauce, granola bars, breakfast cereal, instant oatmeal, flavored yogurt, frozen dinners and many other foods. The largest contributor of added sugars in the diet is high-calorie soft drinks. Looking at the “sugar” line on the Nutrition Facts label doesn’t always help, because it lumps naturally occurring sugar together with added sugars. So you need to look at the ingredients listing to determine if the product has added sugar. Look for words like cane crystals, corn sweetener, evaporated cane juice or syrup, fructose, dextrose, glucose, sucrose, fruit juice concentrates, agave nectar (or other types of nectar), high-fructose corn syrup, honey, malt syrup, or molasses. Or more simply: Eat fewer processed foods and more fresh produce; use fresh ingredients when cooking; and drink more water and milk. Aurora Project Inc. seeks donations for area homeless The Aurora Project Inc., a non-profit agency that offers new beginnings to homeless women and their children, is seeking donations of gift cards, gas cards and cash donations. The donations will be used to assist Aurora House in continuing its mission of empowering homeless women and children to achieve self sufficiency and independence. The organization’s transitional housing program offers a comprehensive program where women can work through the issues that led to their homelessness, build their parenting and life skills and take the time they need to make permanent, positive changes so that they will never be homeless again. Aurora House is the only facility in northwest Ohio, southeast Michigan that allows mothers and their children to live together as they work through the issues which led to their homelessness.
