Mineral Area College — February 2013 Newsletter
Upward Bound
Neighbor’s Nook
A few summers ago, our summer theme was “Face
your Fears.” That summer, we ate chocolate covered
bugs, had clowns at our formal dinner, and went white water rafting. Now,
avoiding eating bugs, being entertained by clowns, or white water rafting will
probably have little impact on your future, but avoiding some things you fear can
have a great impact, even limit the future.
I remember when it was time for me to start college. I was completely terrified
to step on the campus, get my books, and go to my first class! There is
something about the unknown that can be very frightening. Thankfully, I faced
my fear, and college/university life became second nature.
What is it you fear Is there a good thing you fear you are avoiding Don’t let
your fear of the unknown keep you from doing what you are meant to do in the
future. So, apply to the university, run for office at the club at school, audition
for the school play, ask a teacher for help, get your license, apply for a job, etc.
When you make yourself do one fearful thing, you learn things are often not as
bad as anticipated and the results will change your future.
