OUR 40 YEARS OF<br />

RACING HERITAGE!<br />

Back in the late 60s the <strong>Cloyes</strong> engineering team, headed by Mr. Bob Bub,<br />

saw the surging popularity of the weekend racer <strong>and</strong> set out to develop<br />

products to service the race crowd. In 1970, Mr. Bub <strong>and</strong> his team<br />

developed <strong>and</strong> marketed the very fi rst True ® Roller Speed set. With its<br />

balanced <strong>and</strong> multi-keyway sprockets, h<strong>and</strong>-matched with a new chain<br />

featuring solid bushing type rollers, the<br />

True ® Roller set was designed for racing<br />

<strong>and</strong> changed the timing game forever.<br />

In this 1972 letter, Junior Johnson<br />

attributes the new <strong>Cloyes</strong> True ® Roller<br />

set to aiding in their win at Atlanta (with<br />

Bobby Allison driving). They won 10<br />

races that year. The <strong>Cloyes</strong> name<br />

soon became known for the best racing<br />

timing set in the U.S.<br />

As racing grew both professionally <strong>and</strong> at the enthusiast level, the<br />

<strong>Cloyes</strong> line of High Performance cam drives grew with it. Over the<br />

years, <strong>Cloyes</strong> engineers have collaborated on projects with some of<br />

the legendary names in racing – names like Hendrick, Roush, Yates,<br />

Dorton, Mondello, as well as the major racing programs at GM, Ford,<br />

Mopar, <strong>and</strong> Mercury Marine.<br />

As competitors came into the market with copy-cat speed sets,<br />

we needed to take it up a notch. In 1992, <strong>Cloyes</strong> developed <strong>and</strong><br />

patented the Hex-A-Just ® True ® Roller. Hex-A-Just ® was an industry<br />

fi rst, allowing an engine builder to easily adjust valve timing with the<br />

turn of an allen wrench, saving hours on the dyno or at the track.<br />

We soon added our Quick Button 2 pc Timing Cover allowing easy<br />

access to the timing adjustment. We now have over fi ve patents<br />

that compliment our Hex-A-Just ® system, which remains the premier<br />

adjustable timing set on the market.<br />

<strong>Cloyes</strong> Wins Indy!! <strong>Cloyes</strong> helped power Arie Luyendyk’s winning car at the 1997 Indianapolis 500.<br />

This was the fi rst race featuring the Olds Aurora racing engine. Because of our close ties to GM, we<br />

were asked to make the timing set for their entries in the new Indy Racing League.<br />

Until its demise in 2006, all the Pontiac Firebirds running in the IROC Series (International Race of<br />

Champions) were equipped with a <strong>Cloyes</strong> True ® Roller set. More recently, we’ve made special timing<br />

sets for the prototype engines you see running the 24 Hour races at Lemans, Sebring <strong>and</strong> Daytona.<br />

Over the past 40 years, it has been our innovation <strong>and</strong> attention to detail that has set us apart from<br />

the rest. Today, <strong>Cloyes</strong> custom race products are in winning engines at all racing levels across the<br />

TRUE ® ROLLER SETS FOR ALL YOUR LS NEEDS!<br />

We start with sprockets machined from premium billet steel on state-of-the-art CNC equipment. Both<br />

sprockets are then induction hardened <strong>and</strong> oil-quenched using our in-house multi-stage heat treat<br />

process. Our sprockets are made “oversized” to eliminate the chain slack found in the OE <strong>and</strong><br />

other aftermarket sets. The cam sprocket is machined for <strong>and</strong> includes a captured thrust bearing to<br />

reduce friction. Our Premium True ® Roller chains feature superior strength with full roller action. Side<br />

plates are cut <strong>and</strong> shaved from high strength steel <strong>and</strong> heat-treated for maximum fatigue resistance.<br />

Hex-A-Just ® 4.6L 2V<br />

Increase both torque <strong>and</strong> horsepower with improved<br />

cam timing balance. This engine is unique in that<br />

the individual bank valve trains are controlled<br />

by two separate chains <strong>and</strong> cam sprockets. The<br />

patented <strong>Cloyes</strong> Hex-A-Just ® system allows you to<br />

quickly make adjustments to balance the right <strong>and</strong><br />

left banks <strong>and</strong> meet any custom cam specifi cations<br />

required to maximize your engines output.<br />

This is not a two-piece sprocket design.<br />

This exclusive Hex-A-Just ® product is a one-piece<br />

sprocket design that functions in the same way<br />

as the OE confi guration. It utilizes a stainless steel<br />

adjuster plate of specifi ed hardness <strong>and</strong> thickness<br />

that replaces the OE cam sprocket washer.<br />

Wide tolerances are an inherent flaw with any mass<br />

produced OE part. This is corrected by the fact that<br />

our sprockets are precision machined from premium<br />

billet steel on our state-of-the-art CNC equipment.<br />

Special care is taken to tolerance critical features (bore<br />

fitment, keyway fitment, timing angle, etc.) for each high<br />

performance sprocket manufactured. All sprockets<br />

are then induction hardened <strong>and</strong> oil-quenched using<br />

our in-house multi-stage heat treat process.<br />

The dynamometer graph shows noticeable torque<br />

<strong>and</strong> horsepower gains as a result of corrected<br />

camshaft positions from a simple bolt-on. Your<br />

FORD 4.6L MODULAR ENGINES<br />

Hex-A-Just ® 4.6L 4V<br />

As with the 2V, the 4V has the same potential<br />

to increase both torque <strong>and</strong> horsepower<br />

with improved cam timing balance. This<br />

engine is like the 2V in that the individual<br />

bank valve trains are controlled by two<br />

separate primary drives, but in addition<br />

the 4V utilizes secondary drives to control<br />

the intake cams. The patented <strong>Cloyes</strong><br />

Hex-A-Just ® system allows you to make<br />

the needed adjustments to customize<br />

your valve train settings. Our primary<br />

cam sprockets allow you to balance the<br />

banks, while the 9-keyway secondary cam<br />

sprockets give you the tools required to<br />

adjust exhaust cam to intake cam overlap.<br />

This is not a two-piece sprocket design.<br />

camshaft to the center of the crankshaft.<br />

Accurately matching your timing set<br />

to the center distance of your engine<br />

will determine the performance <strong>and</strong><br />

longevity of your timing set.<br />

TECH INFO - TIMING CHAINS<br />

The racing world has different levels of performance <strong>and</strong> the same is true of the performance<br />

parts world. There are different levels of speed sets also, <strong>and</strong> it is important to match the set<br />

to your needs. As a general rule, you want to upgrade your timing set as you upgrade the<br />

rest of your valve train components. Within our own product line, we offer two different levels<br />

of speed sets - STREET <strong>and</strong> RACE. The factors that separate them are sprocket material,<br />

heat treatment, chain type <strong>and</strong> level, matching, <strong>and</strong> adjustability. See page 32 for a quick<br />

reference feature comparison.<br />

Probably the most critical part of your timing set is the Timing Chain. Key requirements<br />

to a quality chain are the component materials <strong>and</strong> the manufacturing processes. Each<br />

component is designed to provide excellent wear properties as well as ductility to endure<br />

shock loads. This balancing of both hardness <strong>and</strong> ductility can only be accomplished by<br />

SEAMED vs. SEAMLESS ROLLERS<br />

This seemingly endless <strong>and</strong> age-old debate really has no merit. The fact is, it doesn’t<br />

matter if a roller is seamed or seamless as long as the proper material, heat treatment, <strong>and</strong><br />

manufacturing processes are implemented. Our st<strong>and</strong>ard Street True ® Roller chain, which<br />

we manufacture with seamless rollers, has proven to be an excellent entry level performer.<br />

The <strong>Cloyes</strong> Premium True ® Roller chain, which has seamed rollers <strong>and</strong> is used on all our<br />

premium race sets, is racing <strong>and</strong> winning at tracks across the country <strong>and</strong> around the world.<br />

The extremely high-end <strong>Cloyes</strong> “Z” chain, a new option on our LS applications, also has<br />

seamed rollers <strong>and</strong> is being used by many of the leading 24 hour endurance teams. So in<br />

conclusion, it’s less about the seamed or seamless roller, but more about the material used,<br />

the manufacturing processes, <strong>and</strong> a commitment to quality.<br />

Why Advance or Retard Valve Timing<br />

Adjusting your valve timing gives you the ability to customize your torque <strong>and</strong> power curves<br />

to optimize your desired engine output for your specific application needs.<br />

ADVANCED TIMING = MAXIMUM TORQUE AT LOW RPM<br />

Recommended for towing, performance street driving, <strong>and</strong> drag racing with<br />

automatic transmissions.<br />

RETARDED TIMING = MAXIMUM TORQUE AT HIGH RPM<br />

Recommended for circle track, drag racing with manual transmissions <strong>and</strong> other<br />

all-out racing applications.<br />

How to Advance or Retard Valve Timing<br />

center distance - The calculated distance between the center of the crankshaft <strong>and</strong><br />

the center of the camshaft when installed on the engine block. See page 28 for more<br />

timing set center distance - The calculated distance between the center of the crank<br />

sprocket <strong>and</strong> the center of the cam sprocket with regard to chain pitch <strong>and</strong> tooth count.<br />

runout - The amount of linear variation as a timing set rotates. Excessive runout will<br />

negatively impact performance.<br />

sets with respect to center distance <strong>and</strong> runout. The center distance is matched to<br />

custom center distance set – This can be an undersized set for align honed blocks<br />

or any custom size to match a customer’s block measurement. See page 28 for more<br />

achieve correct center distance on particular sets or applications. This is especially<br />

which provides improved chain wrap, complete distribution of torque loads, <strong>and</strong><br />

accommodates the components as the system wears with use.<br />

matched gear set - <strong>Cloyes</strong> process that qualifies a gear set with respect to center<br />

distance, correct backlash, <strong>and</strong> runout.<br />

induction hardened - <strong>Cloyes</strong> process that heat treats the teeth of a sprocket without<br />

affecting the hub/web portion of the part. The advantage is a hardened wear surface<br />

where the chain makes contact, yet a ductile hub/web that can withst<strong>and</strong> shock loads.<br />

captured needle thrust bearing - Enclosed bearing that is accommodated by specific<br />

sprockets for the purpose of enduring thrust loads from the valve train. This type of<br />

bearing minimizes frictional losses between the cam sprocket thrust surface <strong>and</strong> the<br />

front of the block, <strong>and</strong> also alleviates wear issues.<br />

thrust washer – Frictional surface part that functions as a wear resistance between<br />

the cam sprocket thrust surface <strong>and</strong> the front of the block. Our washers are available<br />

in hardened spring steel <strong>and</strong> bronze for specific purposes.<br />

rollerized cam button – An assembled part that contains a thrust bearing for the<br />

purpose of setting cam endplay. This part is constructed using heat treated billet <strong>and</strong> a<br />
