History of Olean, N. Y.
The industrious city of Olean, is located in Cattaraugus County,
Seventy miles southeast of Buffalo on the Buffalo division and terminus
of the Rochester & Pittsburg division of the Western New York and
Pennsylvania Railroads.
Olean has many and varied manufacturing industries, among
which may be mentioned Buswell, Hubbard & Co., James & W. P.
Pierce & Co., Olean Leather Company, tanners, several Glass Companies,
Carley Heater Company, Chamberlain Mfg. Co., stump machines,
Grosselli Chemical Company, Weidman & Company, cooperage
stock and the Dotterweich Brewing Company and several others.
The city is also a trade center for a large farming community
which results in the general prosperity of its merchants.
The educational and religious advantages of Olean are of high
order, both the school and church buildings being substantial in construction
and many of them architectural in design.
The city enjoys full express, telegraph and banking facilities and
is well represented in the newspaper line, The Olean Herald and Olean
Times being the principal daily papers, both of which enjoy a large circulation
and have much influence in the county. The population of
Olean is about 16,500.
