Hasan Robinson
Explores and unveils a new age in
music
Tania B.
It is difficult to say if Hasan
Robinson (aka Bil Basmala) had any
idea about the revolutionary music
he would be gifting to the world only
a few years later. Or perhaps the
visionary in him had always known
that he would push the known
boundaries of hip-hop and construct
a bridge that would traverse the musical
evolution of many years within
the span of a few minutes, a single
track or a passionate collection. That
is exactly what this independent
recording artist has been doing ever
since his emergence in the westcoast
underground hip-hop scene in
1998 with an LA produced Record
Usephasan- Chemistry Teraqueous
(Pomo & Amani Smith).
Producer-rapper Hasan Robinson is
being hailed as the architect of neovisionary
soul music. His creations
speak volumes about his unique
attitude towards his art, positioning
him as the very embodiment of the
spirit of breaking away, breaking
free. For, not only does his metaphysical
approach seek to redefine
all known definitions and genres of
music, he himself is the overreacher
trying to reconceive the notion
and the traditional functions of an
emcee or producer. Like his music
his is the unconventional genius, his
vision teetering on the borders of
the extraordinary and the novel. Bil
Basmala and Eastern Department’s
soulful ambiance is a layered combination
of classic hip-hop drums with
abstract and alternative rap lyrics.
Quirky drums, deep baselines and
intense thick atmospheric textures
cover each track. The rhythm driven
studio recordings are complemented
by harmonious vocals and lyrics
based on social commentary and
individual enlightenment. Originally
conceived or envisioned by Hasan
as an eclectic blend, neo-visionary
soul takes the electronic, chill-out
or left field genre into a completely
new sphere. Accompanied by complimentary
visuals from Basmala,
neo-visionary soul is a promising
addition to the left field, electronic
and hip-hop genre. To the listeners
it promises a new, hitherto
unknown bliss or an awakening
of the soul.
To quote the
artist
himself, “Since around 2009, I have
been experimenting with this sound.
I called it dubeclectric then. I wasn’t
interested in reaching a wider audience
at the time and it is not guaranteed
now. Instead, I am content
with putting out records in a classic
format. It’s kind of difficult without
that in your face, big label machine
pumping out your music. Yet, there is
something to say about personal expression.
Bil Basmala offers that with
a solid intention and focus on other
things outside of the self. That universal
and unseen force influences what
I am able to re-create.”
The world of Hip-Hop has come alive with music that is here to make a mark on
the hearts and minds of the progressive listeners. On one hand, Hip-Hop music
makers Ridwan ‘onBeats’ and Hasan ‘Bil Basmala’ join forces to compose the
eerily ecstatic and on the other, two veteran producers Rob Bass (Fka:Fanatik)
and Hasan Robinson (Fka: Autolect) collaborate on their debut album “Monoverse”
(2010) to create music that treads the domain of the unexplored. But
that’s not all. Adding to the already mounting excitement is the news that the
Mononauts are back in the studio working on their new album that may hit the
racks anytime between late 2013 and early 2014.
The new creations of Ridwan and Hasan seek to create a musical territory
where the electric psychedelic Space Rock influenced beats and backgrounds of
onBeats meet the abstract, enlightened and sub-conscious lyrics of Bil Basmala.
As they break free from the defined structures of the 1 and ah 2 they contribute
to the conception of something that is distinct in its identity and yet exhibits both
the creators’ musical abilities. Mononauts are creating a new fusion of the energetic
and the experimental. Best suited for headphone science, these industry
darling boys continue to be the pioneers of new possibilities for Hip-Hop.
Fanatik for a more evolved hip-hop
Art, in any and all its forms, is the truest representation
of the soul. To understand an artist and his
creations, it hence makes sense to delve deep into
the alleys of his mind and at least try to understand
his beliefs, inspirations and thought processes that
seamlessly blend to give birth to newer creations.
Thanks to the social networking sites, taking a peek
into the psychology is not that difficult after all.
For instance, one of the tweets of music artist and
producer OnBeats aka Fanatik reads, ‘Never met a
Beat I didn’t Break’ thus setting our expectations for
something new, unique and almost revolutionary
in its nature and appeal. The progressive listeners
already know what this veteran hip-hop artist has
in store for them every time. But perhaps not all are
aware that the realm of the unexplored is about to
be extended as Rob Bass (Fka:Fanatik) collaborate
with Hasan Robinson (Fka: Autolect) on their debut
album “Monoverse”.
Technically, in musical parlance, on-beat translates
into the strongest accent in the melody and the
likeliest place for a chord change. In the context
of the hip-hop genre, the name OnBeats perhaps
hints at the powerful symphonic deluge that has
taken over the music lover’s world and the passion
and ‘Fanatik’cism that has forever changed the
way hip-hop was perceived. Not only has OnBeats
given the world an evolved hip-hop music but has
also introduced such future stars as Planet Asia, DJ
Babu and Rhettmatic and the Subcontinents. In
fact, the sparse relaxed beats of Fanatik provided
the perfect backdrop where Planet Asia’s battletested
flow would find its truest expression. The
duo appeared together on Tripek Records’ Rules of
the Game compilation alongside veterans like the
Living Legends and the Coup.
The official website of Fanatik describes him as a
beat maker, music producer and multimedia artist.
And, in all these capacities, sometimes alone and
sometimes in collaboration with another artist or
group, he has created countless number
of albums and tracks, many of which
are groundbreaking in their appeal. For
instance, in ‘Wild Stylus’ released in 1997
by newAndalus Records, Fanatik joined
forces with two of the world famous
Beat Junkies DJ Babu (Dilated Peoples)
and DJ Rhettmatic (Visionaries) to present
the known classic hip-hop song format
with a new twist. His ‘Phanatikbeats’
was the first full length (2LP) record and
the first instrumental record on Stonesthrow
Record in 1996.
It is very difficult to define the dimensions
that are contained within the
music of Fanatik. Just like his name
his music too is passionate or maybe
we should call it sublimely passionate.
Almost a new genre that we might
call transcendental hip-hop. Fanatik’s
Tauheed Productions writes, ‘One God…
Many Beats..’ And, listening to his music,
we feel that every beat of is a way that
extends from the finite to the infinite,
the journey that takes all to Allah.
Songs, Scores And Tracks
Urban Sufi Music established in 2004 has
progressively grown from a concept built
on an artistic self expression platform,
to an independent publishing company
that embraces many genres of style.
From instrumental albums and alternative
Hip Hop to soulful manifestations
of pure inspiration, Urban Sufi Music
combines the concept of art and music
into an expansive collection of raw, unconventional
must have singles, albums
and tracks.
Urban Sufi Music was built on strong
principles of culture, diversity and
understanding brought about by Hasan
Robinson, who works to keep Urban
Sufi Music stable in a quickly changing
industry. Hasan is an intellect by nature
and constantly expands his knowledge
through research, reading and writing.
Hasan, being an artist himself, believes
everything in life carries meaning and
through that meaning we can begin to
understand our existence. The definition
of Urban Sufi Music is classic as it
combines culture with history and allows
Urban Sufi Music to remain open to new
ideas while staying true to its nature.
Hasan describes Urban “As a dark mark
that is reluctant to let you progress in
the Western 21st Century, a dichotomy
of our divine inheritance as human
beings versus contrived social programming
and twisted norms.” The name Sufi
comes from “Suf,” the Arabic word for
wool or “saf,” the Persian word for pure.
Urban Sufi Music remains consistent in
a culture where we are programmed to
think based off of social pressures, political
influence and economic uncertainty
and only through full spectrum expansion
of the mind, body and spirit can
those thoughts be made pure. Embracing
the connection between darkness
and purity with an open mind and commanding
approach is one of the many
reasons Urban Sufi Music began with a
unique vision and continues to inspire,
create and amaze in 2013.
The flow. Autolect doesn’t really rap.
He’s not singing, he’s not talking. I don’t
know what to call it. You just gotta listen.
It’s serious business. It has some Digable
Planets flavor with a dash of Mos
Def. It’s spiritual in the real sense, not the
patchouli-smelling PM Dawn sense. It’s
intelligent and conscious without being
didactic or preaching.
So Autolect is being retired, as the man
moves on to a new era of music under
Bil Basmala. As per usual, he’s got a huge
slew of material lined up which is bound
to be dope.
Autology both celebrates and closes the
books on the Autolect era. What you got
here is 13 of his greatest tracks with some
interview snippets which give you a little
taste of his larger thought. (elmattic)
KATEEB
JIHAD AL NAFS
I conducted an interview based on 25 questions with a Bay
Area Muslim / Father / Husband and Artist named Jihad (Al-
Nafs) aka: Kateeb. He was born Harvey Harcum in Virginia,
USA. He converted or rather reverted to Islam and has been a
practicing Muslim for 18 years, since 1994.
The question and answer session began with one general question
in regards to his path to accepting the religion of Islam. As
a Muslim myself and a long time associate of Harvey Harcum.
I found his questions a bit contrived and purposely safe. Yet,
this is not a contradiction to the nature of being Muslim. As
you will see many reverts in the United States have accepted
Islam due to its clarity and structured nature in order to want to
know what Allah (God) wants from us. This predisposition is a
constant theme through out the interview and is in my opinion
integral to Muslim converts or reverts in the west.
I was also a bit reluctant to write this expose / article in an
interview style. I felt that the person whom I was interviewing
was on guard due to the nature of the perception of Islam in our
current state. With that being said, I will attempt to translate
and articulate with the greatest of clarity and safety a testimony
of a sincere Muslim brother
The interview began by a simple question of asking how long
has he been Muslim. I love to ask reverts this question because
taking Shahaada is a very joyous and memorable occasion for
reverts. They always remember each detail and there is certainly
a back to story of humbled circumstance that warms your heart
to hear.
After receiving DAWA from someone that he admired, Harvey
Harcum decided to Take Shahada on his birthday in 1994.
The importance of shared information and the character of the
person delivering the information was a persistent theme in the
interview. Leading up to taking Shahada Harvey experienced
what only could be described as a deep yearning for knowledge
in regards to Islam. He said that Spikes Lee’s “Malcolm X”
was a huge influence on him. Which makes a case for positive
images of Muslims in the media affects people’s perception of
Islam in a posiyive way.
state where we believed in god.” Harvey replied.
Growing up in a Christian country, family and environment did not
seem to offer him as well as other reverts enough in terms of understanding
what Allah wants from us. Whether in church and bible study on
Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday many have found that Islam or submission
to god is a natural structure or inclination within our selves. While
Christianity and the bible have served as a mere thoroughfare for many,
whom are traversing back to our true nature as Muslims or people whom
submit to god. In regards to this Harvey replies: “When we come into
this world the point of this life is to try and remember and prepare ourselves
to return to the god (ALLAH) that we have already bore witness
to.”
When asked what attracted him to the religion of Islam. Harvey replied
over and over, ‘The People”, ‘Definitely the character of the people.”
Islam has a strict hygiene and criterion for prayer and guidance. This also
was a key point for Harvey ‘s accepting Islam into his life. The nature
of people and their differences have also been a plus for Harvey in his
acceptance of Islam. The difference in people food and culture in Islam is
diverse yet unified under Allah by the 5 pillars of Islam. This is a proof to
the true nature of mans capability of uniting in the face of adversity and
mankind’s ability to overcome, overlook and progress with the guidance
of Allah.
The Islamic structure is a protection for all facets of life. Harvey
explained that Islam helped him learn about harmful aspects of life for
him and his family. Coupled with the joys of fatherhood, the ability to
conduct prayer with his family 5 times every day is another aspect of
unity that Islam promotes in the family.
When most artist are trying to come to grips with themselves and their
surroundings, Jihad Al-Nafs (Harvey), A hip-hop emcee and producer
has found a wealth of subject matter and material inspired by his life in
submission to Allah. “If I didn’t have that type of substance, I wouldn’t
want to rhyme (rap) or try to emcee at all, Period, He says.
http://positivebeatsforpositiverhymes.com/
H. Robinson
At the time I didn’t know anything about Islam, but I knew
there was something pulling me towards that,” He said.
His reflective nature seemed to find a home in Islam. The significance
of taking his Shahada on his birthday came into existence
