KLEVFOS Forever – how long is that?<br />

A new conservation plan for a pulp and paper mill<br />

Klevfos Pulp & Paper mill (1888-1976) is a piece of<br />

industrial history from the times when wood based<br />

products was the main export business of Norway.<br />

It is located at Løten in the county of Hedmark, 120<br />

km north of Oslo.<br />

Klevfos Pulp & Paper mill [1] was never the biggest,<br />

most important or otherwise especially significant<br />

amongst the many similar industrial plants in the<br />

country. What eventually lead it to be singled out as<br />

THE place of its kind to be saved for prosperity is<br />

the result of a number of factors.<br />

After the decision of a total closure of the plant in<br />

1976, the thought of transforming this site into an<br />

industrial ”memorial” or museum started to grow<br />

in the local municipality and amongst workers at<br />

Klevfos.<br />

When it closed in 1976 the industrial plant was<br />

nearly unchanged in respect of both machinery<br />

and production line since the 1920s, thus providing<br />

a possible long historical perspective. Many<br />

enthusiastic people locally supported the idea of<br />

turning it into a museum telling the story of working<br />

class people and industrial history.<br />

The local authorities supported the idea and so<br />

did the Norwegian Paper Industry Union and The<br />

Norwegian Pulp and Paper Association.<br />

As a result Klevfos became one of ten most highly<br />

prioritized industrial sites in Norway, from a list of<br />
