Root: Raj or ranj—to be affected, moved, coloured.<br />
Its opposite number is dwesha—dislike, repulsi<strong>on</strong> and hatred.<br />
And from <strong>the</strong>se two opposing attitudes of mind, raga and dwesha,<br />
a whole philosophy named raga-dwesha has developed. It is<br />
maintained that <strong>the</strong> endless cycles of birth and death are kept in<br />
moti<strong>on</strong> by <strong>the</strong> effects of <strong>the</strong>se two mental states. Our likes and<br />
dislikes cause us to reap <strong>the</strong> fruits of our attracti<strong>on</strong>s and<br />
aversi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

toy in <strong>the</strong> hands of <strong>the</strong> two currents. But he who does selfanalysis,<br />
introspecti<strong>on</strong> and meditati<strong>on</strong> goes above Raga and<br />
dwesha and attains eternal bliss and immortality.” 1<br />
