Sense: ‘The austerity of sitting between five fires’—namely, four<br />
fires <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground oriented to <strong>the</strong> cardinal points, with <strong>the</strong> sun<br />
above counted as <strong>the</strong> fifth.<br />
A scripturally approved method of purificati<strong>on</strong>, in which <strong>the</strong><br />
practiti<strong>on</strong>er, utilising <strong>the</strong> repetiti<strong>on</strong> of mantra, is himself <strong>the</strong><br />
‘offering to <strong>the</strong> fire’; sometimes sitting between <strong>the</strong> ‘five fires’<br />
for up to twenty years. In <strong>the</strong> 20th century it has become<br />
customary in some areas, to increase <strong>the</strong> number of fires over a<br />
l<strong>on</strong>g period of practice.<br />
