Sense: ‘Cerem<strong>on</strong>ial worship of <strong>the</strong> feet of <strong>the</strong> Guru or spiritual<br />

preceptor, or his sandals.’<br />

Padårthåbhåvanå (pad-daar-tah-bhah-vannah)<br />

Syn<strong>on</strong>:<br />

Sense: ‘Service to <strong>the</strong> feet of <strong>the</strong> Lord.’<br />

This is <strong>on</strong>e of many forms of Bhakti (devoti<strong>on</strong>al) <strong>Yoga</strong>, in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> devotee feels impelled to do service at <strong>the</strong> ‘feet of <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord.’ Evidently, <strong>the</strong> Brahman, or <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>sciousness which<br />

governs <strong>the</strong> universe has no ‘feet,’ but it <strong>the</strong> sentiment that arises<br />

in <strong>the</strong> devotee, is such as if he or she was sitting at <strong>the</strong> feet of<br />

God.<br />

Thus <strong>the</strong> real meaning of pada-sevana is to take <strong>the</strong> whole of<br />

humanity as <strong>the</strong> ‘feet’ of God and serve every<strong>on</strong>e and every thing<br />

(including <strong>the</strong> sick, <strong>the</strong> poor, animals, temple idols, etc.), as<br />

service to <strong>the</strong> Lord.<br />

Sense: ‘Lotus-field’ — referring to <strong>the</strong> psychic ‘field’ or ‘energy<br />

sheath’ of <strong>the</strong> subtle body in which <strong>the</strong> chakras (here visualised<br />

as lotuses) functi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Padmåsana (pad-maa-san-nah)<br />

Sense: ‘The lotus pose’— a seated positi<strong>on</strong> in hatha yoga, in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> legs are crossed tailor-wise, with <strong>the</strong> feet resting <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
