The c<strong>on</strong>cept of Goddess Lakshmi means ‘Good Luck’<br />
or ‘Good Fortune’ and she is <strong>the</strong>refore worshipped as<br />
<strong>the</strong> goddess of wealth and prosperity, both material and<br />
spiritual.<br />
Root: ‘Lakshmi’ derives from laksya, meaning ‘aim’ or<br />
She is usually depicted as a beautiful woman with a golden<br />
complexi<strong>on</strong>, sitting or standing <strong>on</strong> a full-bloomed lotus and<br />
holding a lotus bud, which represents beauty, purity and fertility.<br />
She has four arms, her hands representing <strong>the</strong> four ends of human<br />
life: dharma—righteousness, kama—desires, artha—wealth, and<br />
moksha—liberati<strong>on</strong> from <strong>the</strong> cycle of birth and death.<br />
Gold coins are endlessly falling from her hands, c<strong>on</strong>veying <strong>the</strong><br />
idea that those who worship her will become wealthy. She is<br />
always shown wearing a red sari (symbolising activity) with a<br />
golden lining, again indicating prosperity.<br />
She is <strong>the</strong> ‘c<strong>on</strong>sort’ or active energy of Vishnu, and is also<br />
known as Lakshmi-Naråyana in his company.<br />
