Dragon Boat Race practices<br />

Practices have started for men <strong>an</strong>d women interested in being a part of the <strong>Kadena</strong> Shogun Dragon Boat Race team<br />

for the May 5th Naha Dragon Boat Race. Those interested in participating are encouraged to attend practices at the<br />

Risner track Monday, Wednesday, <strong>an</strong>d Friday from 6-6:45 a.m. or 5:30-6:15 p.m. <strong>an</strong>d at Fairchild Pool Tuesday <strong>an</strong>d<br />

Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. or 6:30-7:30 p.m. <strong>an</strong>d Saturday from 9-10 a.m. or 10-11 a.m. for rowing practice.<br />

Team members must be <strong>Air</strong> Force active duty, guard, or reserve members, Department of Defense civili<strong>an</strong><br />

employees or SOFA status family members 18 years of age <strong>an</strong>d older.<br />

USO parking lot closure<br />

The <strong>Kadena</strong> USO, building 337 by Gate 2, parking lot will be closing for our <strong>an</strong>nual Easter event. The closure will<br />

begin April 5 at 5 p.m. <strong>an</strong>d will remain in effect until April 8 at 8 a.m. Please ensure all vehicles are removed from the<br />

parking lot prior to April 5.<br />

Elevator outage<br />

The following elevators will be closed to the public for on-going renovation projects. We appreciate your patience<br />

while we bring these 30-year-old elevators back into good working order. Notices will be posted in each tower to<br />

remind residents.<br />

Building 4513, passenger elevator, Camp Courtney, closed <strong>March</strong> 6 to April 6.<br />

Building 847, freight elevator, Camp Kinser, closed Feb. 27 to April 9.<br />

Building 859, freight elevator, Camp Kinser, closed <strong>March</strong> 13 to April 6.<br />

Limited dehumidifiers for issue<br />

The Family Housing Appli<strong>an</strong>ce Repair Shop, building 54410 near Camp Shields, has a limited number of<br />

dehumidifiers to issue on a first come, first serve basis for on-base members who live in a tower unit or a unit that is<br />

connected to a chiller pl<strong>an</strong>t. Only one dehumidifier will be issued per customer <strong>an</strong>d it must be returned to the<br />

Appli<strong>an</strong>ce Repair Shop prior to PCS.<br />

HAWC classes<br />

The Health <strong>an</strong>d Wellness Center has <strong>To</strong>bacco Cessation classes every Monday, except holidays, at 11:30 a.m. <strong>an</strong>d<br />

3:30 p.m. If you're unable to attend the class there is <strong>an</strong> online course at www.uc<strong>an</strong>quit2.org, Just bring the certificate<br />

to HAWC personnel at building 4<strong>28</strong>.<br />

The first <strong>an</strong>d third Tuesdays of the month we have our Watch our Weight meetings at noon <strong>an</strong>d 5:30 p.m. This is a<br />

Weight watchers type group designed to provide tips on weight loss <strong>an</strong>d basic nutrition.<br />

Also, <strong>March</strong> 31 there will be a HAWC hike, everyone will meet at building 4<strong>28</strong> at 9:30 a.m. Call 634-2499 for more<br />

AF Form 63 notifications<br />

Effective immediately, <strong>Air</strong> Force Personnel Center will no longer forward the <strong>Air</strong> Force Form 63 notification to the<br />

member's servicing Military Personnel Section, nor will the MPS be responsible for returning the completed <strong>Air</strong> Force<br />

Form 63 back to AFPC. The <strong>To</strong>tal Force Service Center will contact affected members directly through e-mail, which<br />

will include a link to the <strong>Air</strong> Force Personnel website along with instructions regarding <strong>Air</strong> Force Form 63 completion<br />

<strong>an</strong>d submission.<br />

<strong>Air</strong>men may still seek assist<strong>an</strong>ce through the local MPS <strong>an</strong>d/or AFPC Active Duty Service Commitment Policy,<br />

afpc.dpsipadscpolicy@us.af.mil for ADSC policy questions.<br />

Postal advisory<br />

There are a number of restrictions on mailable items to Jap<strong>an</strong>. Here are some restricted items frequently detected by<br />

Jap<strong>an</strong>ese Custom Officials: Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat products, unless accomp<strong>an</strong>ied by <strong>an</strong> inspection certificate<br />

issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, <strong>an</strong>d pornographic materials.<br />

Online test schedule disabled in AFAEMS<br />

We are still experiencing difficulty with online Professional Military Education <strong>an</strong>d Defense L<strong>an</strong>guage Proficiency Test<br />

scheduling. This feature has been disabled until further notice.<br />

Please call the <strong>Kadena</strong> Education Center at 634-1500, Option 1 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., to schedule<br />

your PME or DLPT exam.<br />

Women’s History Month business networking event<br />

The Women’s History Month Committee is seeking women-owned <strong>an</strong>d/or operated businesses (sales, fitness,<br />

consulting etc. to include home-based) to be a part of The Bonnie Marcus Entrepreneur Fair <strong>March</strong> 30 at the <strong>Kadena</strong><br />

USO from 5-8 p.m. This will be a social <strong>an</strong>d networking event for women business owners to promote their business,<br />

sell their product <strong>an</strong>d gain/share further ideas <strong>an</strong>d knowledge regarding running their business.<br />

Women’s Heritage Month Luncheon<br />

The 18th Mainten<strong>an</strong>ce Group is hosting this year's Women’s Heritage Month Luncheon. It will be at the <strong>Kadena</strong><br />

Officer's Club <strong>March</strong> 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Keynote speaker is Nashawn Turner of Uniquely Designed<br />

Coaching. The cost of the meal is $9.95 (daily lunch buffet) to be paid at the door.<br />

IPE limited customer support<br />

The 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron Individual Protective Equipment section will be minimally m<strong>an</strong>ned <strong>March</strong> 30<br />

College Knowledge Night<br />

Parents <strong>an</strong>d teens, come out to the College Knowledge Night to get the scoop on the college experience. Parents,<br />

find out what it takes to get your teen to college, <strong>an</strong>d how to pay for it once they are there. Teens, ever wonder what<br />

college life is really like Come out to College Knowledge Night <strong>an</strong>d find out. We will have guest speakers addressing<br />

these <strong>an</strong>d all your other college questions. Dinner will be provided <strong>an</strong>d the event is free for all high school students<br />

<strong>an</strong>d their parents. This event will be held in the <strong>Kadena</strong> High School cafeteria <strong>March</strong> 29 from 5-7:30 p.m.<br />

OESC Easter Egg Hunt


There will be <strong>an</strong> Easter egg hunt at <strong>To</strong>rii Beach, Pavilion 5 <strong>March</strong> 31 from noon-3 p.m. The Easter Bunny will be<br />

there, along with bouncy houses, food <strong>an</strong>d prizes.<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong> <strong>March</strong> for Babies<br />

The 2012 <strong>March</strong> of Dimes <strong>March</strong> for Babies begins at 10 a.m. <strong>March</strong> 31 at the Risner Fitness Center on <strong>Kadena</strong>.<br />

Particip<strong>an</strong>ts c<strong>an</strong> register online by going to www.marchforbabies.org, select "find <strong>an</strong> event," choose "Illinois" <strong>an</strong>d then<br />

pick "Okinawa." Registration will also be available at the Risner at 9 a.m. There are two routes for the march; one is<br />

two miles <strong>an</strong>d one is four miles. More th<strong>an</strong> 1,300 particip<strong>an</strong>ts have registered <strong>an</strong>d org<strong>an</strong>izers are looking for more!<br />

Event org<strong>an</strong>izers are also asking for volunteers for the event. Volunteers are asked to meet behind the fitness center<br />

This event is a fundraiser for the <strong>March</strong> of Dimes. The <strong>March</strong> of Dimes mission is to raise awareness for birth defects,<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong> Integrated Service Delivery<br />

The <strong>Kadena</strong> Integrated Service Delivery team is pl<strong>an</strong>ning the 2012 Caring for People Forum <strong>an</strong>d we need you to<br />

make it a success. It will be held April 4 from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at building 59.<br />

We’re looking for military members, civili<strong>an</strong>s, spouses <strong>an</strong>d retirees to join discussion groups org<strong>an</strong>ized to hear issues<br />

or concerns import<strong>an</strong>t to you. If you have <strong>an</strong> idea on a policy item that could be ch<strong>an</strong>ged or a quality of life service<br />

that could be improved upon either on <strong>Kadena</strong> or in the <strong>Air</strong> Force in general — this is your opportunity to share! All<br />

base-level issues identified will be assigned a tracking number <strong>an</strong>d resolved through the Community Action<br />

Information Board <strong>an</strong>d Integrated Delivery System.<br />

The top issues requiring higher level resolution will be prioritized <strong>an</strong>d forwarded for major comm<strong>an</strong>d-level <strong>an</strong>d<br />

potentially <strong>Air</strong> Force-level review in similar Caring for People Forums. The working group topics for this year’s forum<br />

are Family Support, Housing Support, Spouse Communications, School Support, Health <strong>an</strong>d Wellness, Single<br />

<strong>Air</strong>m<strong>an</strong> Support, Special Needs Family Members, <strong>an</strong>d Deployment Support.<br />

Protest<strong>an</strong>t Seder Passover<br />

Annual Rescue Fest<br />

The 31st Rescue Squadron welcomes all Department of Defense personnel <strong>an</strong>d SOFA family members isl<strong>an</strong>d-wide<br />

for our third <strong>an</strong>nual Rescue Fest. This family-friendly, interactive event will take place April 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at<br />

building 3490. The 31st Rescue Squadron invites everyone to watch <strong>an</strong>d experience our squadron mission.<br />

In addition to static displays of vehicles <strong>an</strong>d equipment, we will have multiple demonstrations, including a live<br />

pararescue team insertion by helicopter, a vehicle extrication using the Jaws of Life <strong>an</strong>d other tools, <strong>an</strong>d a high <strong>an</strong>gle<br />

rope rescue from our indoor climbing wall. We'll also have everyone's favorite, survival camp. Children of all ages c<strong>an</strong><br />

put on camouflage face paint <strong>an</strong>d practice signaling aircraft <strong>an</strong>d building survival shelters. Also, try your h<strong>an</strong>d at the<br />

virtual reality parachute simulator. Lastly, adults <strong>an</strong>d children ages six <strong>an</strong>d older will be able to climb our 40 foot<br />

climbing wall. If you would like to climb the wall, please dress appropriately, to include closed toe shoes. We will also<br />

host <strong>an</strong> Easter egg hunt at 1:30 p.m.<br />

Come out <strong>an</strong>d see what the 31st Rescue Squadron is all about. If you're not having fun, you're not trying!<br />

An Easter Sunrise Service is April 8 at <strong>Kadena</strong> Marina 6 a.m. with free breakfast following.<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong> USO Easter Egg Hunt<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong> USO is having <strong>an</strong> Easter Egg Hunt April 8 from noon to 5 p.m. The event will be located at the USO (near<br />

Gate 2) in the parking lot <strong>an</strong>d the grassy area adjacent to the building. The event will feature a free Easter Egg Hunt<br />

for children under 10 years old, divided into age groups. The event will also feature bounce houses for a small fee,<br />

food vendors, a DJ, face painting, <strong>an</strong>d pictures with the Easter bunny. The parking lot to the USO will be closed due<br />

to the event so please arrive early <strong>an</strong>d find <strong>an</strong> alternate location to park.<br />

Child Abuse/Sexual Assault Awareness 5k<br />

There will be a Child Abuse/Sexual Assault Awareness 5k April 13. Registration will begin at 5:30 a.m. in the parking<br />

lot of the Risner Fitness Center. Run begins at 6:30 a.m. Please wear blue or teal. The run is free, but donations are<br />

much appreciated <strong>an</strong>d will be divided for the family advocacy <strong>an</strong>d Sexual Assault Prevention <strong>an</strong>d Response office.<br />

May 19. Male coaches will be needed on Mondays, 5:15-6:30 p.m. <strong>an</strong>d female coaches are needed on Wednesdays,<br />

ACE CLEP-a-thon<br />

<strong>Air</strong>men Committed to Excellence is in need of CLEP/DANTES instructors with a minimum of a Community College of<br />

the <strong>Air</strong> Force degree or higher to instruct classes for a CLEP-a-thon.<br />

Instructors will be required to pl<strong>an</strong> the curriculum geared towards one of the following CLEP/DANTES tests: English,<br />

math, social sciences, speech <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>agement. Past instructors have used practice tests in books from the library<br />

<strong>an</strong>d tests downloaded from Petersons.com/airforce. Instructors will also be required to find their own classroom, but if<br />

one c<strong>an</strong>’t be found, ACE will help in providing a room.<br />

The CLEP-a-thon will run from April 9 through May 6, <strong>an</strong>d will be at least two days a week for a minimum of one hour<br />

each session. More days or time is allowed if the class agrees on first day, but the classes will be advertised as<br />

previously stated. If interested <strong>an</strong>d know of a conference room that c<strong>an</strong> potentially be borrowed after duty hours<br />

please let ACE know.<br />

Potential future CCAF graduates, if you are interested in signing up for one of these classes please provide your<br />

name, e-mail, phone number (duty or cell), <strong>an</strong>d CLEP/DANTES subject(s) needed.<br />

<strong>Kadena</strong> Youth Sports <strong>an</strong>d Fitness is looking for volunteers to assist with their Month of the Military Child Family Fun<br />

Run. The date of this event is April 14. Volunteers are needed to assist with check-in, water stations, <strong>an</strong>d traffic<br />

control from 7:30-11 a.m.<br />
