Message from the President
Another BUSY League year has begun.
Provisionals have been busy with Camp Provisional
and Repeat Boutique shifts. Holiday Happening
Committee continues to work to build a successful
event (no pressure!) and the Cookbook Committee
seeks to find new avenues to sell our League’s
cookbook.
All the while, the Repeat Boutique Committee
is working to increase sales and run the resale
business.
Camp Healthy Kids, a segment of
Kids in the Kitchen, was held in June
at the YWCA and many children
in our community were able to
participate in the week’s events.
Super Sellers have been out in the
community asking businesses and individuals to
contribute to our fundraiser. I know there are
others of you who have already worked hard this
summer on JLL business as well. To that I say,
“thank you for making JLL a priority.”
I heard a speaker a few years ago say, “To whom
much is given, much is expected.” I think about
that quote often. I know the members of the Junior
League have been given much. We are all human
and would love more, but we have so much to be
thankful for — food on the table, friends to laugh
and cry with and a home to sleep in and toss our
stuff in as we head out the door in our vehicles!
T
Make a Difference!
Melanie Ragain, President
Whether the “expected” part
is imposed by others or created
by ourselves, we often do so much
for others. It amazes me that we are a group of
women who raise money and contribute through
our obligations then turn around and give to our
community year after year. That speaks volumes to
the character of the women of the JLL.
I heard a preacher say something along the lines
that this was not his church, but that it was our
church.
“... it does not read that it is my League.
It belongs to all of us...”
The same is true about the Junior League of
Lubbock. I have a placement this year just like
every member, every year. This year it happens
to be President, and if you read my Duties and
Responsibilities it does not read that it is my
League. It belongs to all of us. So always feel free
to speak to me about things you like or dislike
about our organization because it is just that, our
organization.
I hope to see you at the October General Meeting
on Monday, October 5. Social will begin at 6:30
p.m., with a short meeting at 7 p.m. leading into
another great “Done in a Meeting” project.
Editor’s Note
Mary Myers, Publications Chairman
Annual Planning and New Active Mentor Committee
What Is Annual Planning
Beth Hendricks, Annual Planning Chairman
Many of you have already had me
in attendance at your various committee meetings
to complete an annual plan for your committee
year, but I am sure some of you are still asking
yourselves, “what exactly is an annual plan”
The main purpose of annual planning is to
encourage thinking about the organization’s big
picture, to set goals and priorities, and to evaluate
how well these objectives have been met.
BE PROUD! A committment to goal setting and
evaluation ensures continued success!
An annual plan ensures that the League and its
individual committees and councils are utilizing its
resources effectively in working toward our overall
mission: Promoting Voluntarism, Developing the
Potential of Women and Improving the Community.
T
As the Annual Planner for the
Junior League of Lubbock, I am
charged with coordinating annual
planning meetings with all in-league committees
and councils.
At the start of the League year I assist with the
formulation of their goals and objectives.
I schedule a mid-year evaluation with each
committee chairman to check on the progress
toward their goals.
Finally, I coordinate end-of-year
transition meetings to assist with the
evaluation of the past year.
Lastly, I work with the Executive Board to formulate
a long-range, three-year plan for the overall
mission of the Junior League of Lubbock. A copy
of this plan can be found in the annual yearbook
distributed at the first General Meeting of the year.
Leagues all across the country see too many members resign soon after their
Provisional year ends. This committee is a resource to help make the transition
into active membership a little easier!
Holiday Happening
Holiday Happening
Holiday Happening
Dana Gustafson, Holiday Happening Chairman
Ask anyone who has been on the
Holiday Happening Committee
before and they will tell you it is the greatest
placement in the League. If you got them alone
though, they would probably tell you that it is not
ALL fun. We have felt the stress six months into an
intense nine months, but we just remind ourselves
of WHY we are doing this. We are not doing this
so we can say we were on the full committee,
although we do love the aprons!
We are doing this because of all the hungry
children who get fed as a result of this hard work.
We are doing this to help build
Hope Lodge so families dealing with cancer will
have a place to go.
As you will see below, the money given to our
community is immense. We are PROUD to tell
people about the almost 1,000 children that we
help feed every week and PROUD to tell people
about working in the rain to help build Legacy
Play Village. We are PROUD to tell people of
our involvement in the establishment of the
Children’s Advocacy Center. We are PROUD of our
involvement with the JLL!
Repeat Boutique
Repeat Boutique
Libby White, Repeat Boutique Chairman
The Repeat Boutique is off to an awesome start for the 2009-2010 year.
Sales are increasing, Provisionals are working hard tagging the merchandise and both
active and sustainer members are bringing us their donations. The committee is working hard putting
in many hours to make the Repeat Boutique a success, but we are having fun too. Be looking for Repeat
Boutique committee members — they will be styling fabulous new pink and black T-shirts, couture tote
bags, and charming Repeat Boutique necklaces!
Second Time’s a
Charm
Last year’s committee was dedicated to improving
membership awareness and increasing profits of
the Repeat Boutique. This year’s committee goal is
to continue that focus. That is why “Second Time’s
a Charm” is our theme for the 2009-2010 year. We
know that the “second” year of continuing the
efforts of last year’s committee along with some
“charming” new ideas will in “time” enable the
Repeat Boutique to generate the needed profits for
the Junior League of Lubbock to give back to our
community.
Food2Kids
It is hard to believe that another
school year has started. The 2009-2010 Food2Kids
Committee is excited and ready to hit the ground
running to support the elementary students of
the LISD schools that are participating in the
F2K program this year. The summer was spent
brainstorming
and trying to find
creative ways to get
the information out
about our program.
On page 15, you will
see an opportunity
to help F2K by
“sponsoring a sack.” Last year’s committee had a
wonderful idea and our current committee is proud
to launch it. For a one-time donation of $120, you
will be able to sponsor one F2K sack for 40 weeks.
It would be a blessing to generate enough funding
with this opportunity to add additional schools
later in the year.
Though a new League year has started, I would like
to brag on the success of last year’s committee. I
am amazed at the amount of food products and
volunteer hours that were donated by various
organizations
whose passion
was to support
our signature
program. Here is
a peek: 18,577
sleeves of Pop-
Tarts, 1,109
fruit cups, and
1,187 pudding
cups.
Food2Kids
Dawne Franks, Food2Kids Chairman
“For a one-time donation of $120,
you will be able to sponsor one
F2K sack for 40 weeks. Your
sponsorship could allow us to
add schools later in the year!”
These items were donated by
The Worship Center, Brownie
Troop 6075, United Supermarkets,
National Charity League and various Texas Tech
University student organizations just to name a few.
The list is long and I am humbled at the support
that F2K is receiving.
The F2K program started
during the 2006-2007
school year with five
schools and 78 sacks the
first week. By the end
of the year, there were
nine schools participating
with the highest sack count at 418. In 2007-2008
we started with nine schools and 139 sacks the
first week. At the end of that year, there were 13
schools participating with the highest sack count
at 721. The 2008-2009 school year started with 13
schools and 256 sacks the first week. We ended the
year with 17 schools participating and a high sack
count of 987.
While working a Repeat Boutique shift last spring,
Cayce Kaufman made a comment that has stuck
with me. I mentioned that I do not have children.
She corrected
me by saying,
as the incoming
F2KChairman, all
of those students
you serve will be
your children. This
is my personal
F2K mission
statement for this
League year.
Food 2 Kids Sack Sponsor
Food2Kids Sack Sponsor Form
Can you imagine what it would be like to go to bed hungry
Thousands of Lubbock children go without food every weekend.
Thanks to the Junior League of Lubbock’s Food2Kids
program, almost 950 children each weekend are going
to bed with fuller tummies.
Now in its fourth year, Food2Kids works with Lubbock
ISD to target elementary school children who are fed
primarily in the school lunchroom Monday through
Friday, but who go hungry on the weekends at home.
Each week, Junior League volunteers stuff sacks of
food and distribute these sacks to children at school on Friday afternoons.
The program has seen tremendous growth. Since September 2007, Food2Kids has increased food sack
distribution by 700 children!
With this tremendous demand, Food2Kids needs your support so that no child is denied.
For a one-time donation of $120, you can sponsor a year’s worth of food sacks for one child. This will
provide a year of sacks to a hungry child every week during the 40-week school year.
Over the years, Food2Kids has received numerous thank-you letters from those we are helping. A
9-year-old third grader named Denise wrote, “Whenever you send me food, it puts me in a good mood.
It puts a smile on my face.” One elementary school parent wrote, “The food has helped me when there
was no more food.”
Please consider sponsoring a year’s worth of food sacks for a Food2Kids child. Your donation could be
the difference in a child’s bedtime dreams.
Yes! I want to make a donation of $120
Please accept a general donation of
Membership Enrichment
The Pride Inside
Done In A Meeting Project
April Walker, Membership Enrichment Chairman
I am so excited to be chairing
Membership Enrichment this year! I can’t believe
how fast the summer flew by and now we have
kicked off the 2009-2010 Junior League year! It is
going to be a fabulous year, and the Membership
Enrich ment Committee already has several projects
in the works.
This year’s “Done in a Meeting” project will supply
the children with a bag of new socks and a pair
of mittens sometime in October or November.
We are ask ing Actives, Provisionals, and Sustainers
to donate items for this project. We need bags of
socks and mittens (children’s sizes). The challenge
is we have VERY little time to collect these items!
“We need bags of sock and mittens (children’s sizes),
The challenge is that we have VERY little time to
collect these items. Bring them to HQ during regular
business hours or to October General Meeting!”
There will be boxes by
the front door at Headquarters
and items
can be brought during
normal business hours,
or to the October
General Meeting.
The Warm Hearts, Warm Hands and Feet Campaign
is this year’s “Done in a Meeting Project,” and is
once again focusing on our Food2Kids program.
At the October General Meeting on October 5, we
will begin as usual at 6:30 p.m. with social, and at
7 p.m. we will conduct an abbreviated business
meet ing. Immediately following, everyone will be
divided into small groups at round tables, and we
will stuff our warm hearts into Ziploc bags for the
children in our community.
If you would like
to simply do nate money for our committee
to purchase socks and mittens that would be
wonderful as well.
Why do we do what we do Well the answer
is simple. We are committed to children. These
kids don’t have the necessities to endure the
winter months such as new socks and mittens to
keep their feet and hands warm. We can make a
difference, so we do.
Cookbook
At our very first
meeting in June, the committee
discussed the sale of cookbooks to
Provisionals at length and agreed that
it was time for a new plan. Knowing
that the cookbook is a fundraiser for
the Junior League of Lubbock, we
could not let it lose any money. We
put our heads together and went to
the Executive Committee with a new
strategy for this year.
During the past two years, the
Cookbook Committee has worked
hard to trade our books with other
Leagues. Now, for the first time since the cookbook
was published, Provisionals will be able to buy
any book that the Junior League of Lubbock has
in stock. Since we have a few books that are
less expensive than ours, our plan asks that they
purchase books at the one-time price of $145 or
the paid-out price of $163 for the year. This is no
different
than
“Provisionals will no
longer HAVE to buy
six of the same book!”
Cookbook Unveils
New Purchasing Plan
Tina Mann, Cookbook Chairman
previous
years, but
they no
longer
have to
buy six of
one book.
The Cookbook Committee introduced the plan at
Camp Provisional and it was very well received.
We are already selling books and look forward to
a successful year for Provisional sales and for our
trades with other Leagues. We are excited about
this possibility and for the chance to promote all
Leagues that have taken a chance with a cookbook.
Upcoming
Cookbook Events
This fall, the Cookbook Committee is going to take
advantage of some great events in order to sell our
book. So look for us at the following events:
Cowboy Symposium – September 12–13
Pinktober – October 6
Holiday Happening – November 18–22
More to Come
As the year rolls on, look for more new ideas to
come from our committee. We are ready to sell, sell,
sell! To all of you Provisionals, don’t forget to call
Kids in the Kitchen is a signature
project of the Junior League of Lubbock. This
project was developed in conjunction with the
Association of Junior Leagues International in
response to the growing need to educate our
youth about the implications of childhood obesity.
This is only the fourth year that JLL has been
implementing this project. In essence, we are still
in the infancy of the impact potential we have to
reach out to the Lubbock community with this
important issue.
My goal as chairman of KIK is to offer several
events throughout the year. We started this summer
with “Camp Healthly Kids.” This was a half-day,
week-long camp in June for girls ages 7-11. Yvette
Foshee was the Camp Leader and in conjunction
with her outstanding committee (Sandi Buchanan,
Wendy Buchheit, Whitney Miller, LuAnn Neal, and
Cathi Rayburn) had an extremely successful event.
More than 45 girls attended this event which took
place at the YWCA. The girls learned about the
importance of healthy eating, adequate exercise,
and general health and well being. There are so
many young girls in our community who could
Kids In The Kitchen
Lisa Johnson, Kids in the Kitchen Chairman
benefit from a camp like this. My hope is that next
year we can expand this event even further.
We received such great feedback from the campers
and their parents.
Thank you to all
of the ladies who
volunteered to
make this event
a phenomenal
success!
The KIK
Committee will
be working to
host two Saturday
morning events,
one this fall and
another in early
spring. These
“The girls
learned about
the importance
of healthy
eating, adequate
exercise, and
general health
and well being.”
events will be reaching a different demographic
than in years past. We will be extending our
efforts in the north and east sides of Lubbock. In
conjunction with community partners and United
Supermarkets, we plan to have these events focus
on the value of good nutrition and the benefits of
making healthy choices.
Our last event of the year will be Saturday, March
6, 2010 in collaboration with Covenant Children’s
Hospital and United Supermarkets. This funfilled,
half-day event will take place at Covenant’s
Knipling Education Center. At this event we have
the opportunity to reach an even larger group of
children.
Stay tuned to hear more about this year’s KIK
theme and the activities planned to continue the
efforts toward reducing childhood obesity in our
community.
Community Council Update
Ellen Wallace, Community Vice President
To understand the Community
Council, it helps to look at who makes up the
team. This year, our members are: Dawne Franks,
Food2Kids Chairman; Lisa Johnson, Kids in the
Kitchen Chairman; Shannon Kirkland, Placement
Vice President; Angela Laughlin, Finance Vice
President; Stacey Siefken Hinkle, Member at Large
B; Susan Vasquez, Research and Development
Chairman; Virginia Dorton, Sustaining Adviser and
Ellen Wallace, Community Vice President.
As you can see by the titles of each member on this
council, each has her own responsibilities to the
Junior League of Lubbock in addition to sitting on
Community Council. Thanks to the commitment
of these ladies, we are able to accomplish an
incredibly important task. We determine how the
Junior League of Lubbock’s money is spent.
Through Community Assistance Grants, we
encourage non-profit agencies to apply for a share
of the $30,000 total. This year grant funds will be
awarded three times, dispersing $10,000 each time.
Our remaining application deadlines for 2009-2010
are: Friday, November 20, 2009, and Friday, March
12, 2010. To apply for this grant, they can simply
visit www.jllubbock.com, click
on “How We Can Help,” and select
“Community Assistance Grants.”
The Community
Council is also
responsible
for awarding
the annual
Community Shift Update and Advisory Planning
As the school year begins, nonprofit
agencies across the community begin
scheduling events and fundraisers. We as Junior
League members often have the opportunity to
assist these organizations by providing volunteers
who help make these events successful. We are
always accepting applications from agencies that
meet these three basic criteria:
• Must have a 501(c)3 tax designation
• Projects must meet a community need in
Lubbock County with clearly stated goals
and objectives.
• Projects must embrace the spirit of the JLL
Mission Statement.
You can log on to the JLL Web site and download
an application if you know a worthy organization.
Advisory Planning
Kathleen Burrell, Advisory Planning Chairman
Did you know that the Junior
League has a committee whose sole purpose
is to study topics presented by the President
and the Executive Board in order to improve
our organization It’s the Advisory Planning
Committee, and I am so excited to serve as its
chairman this year!
Even though you may not be familiar with our
committee, I bet you are familiar with some of its
recommendations: forming an Associate Active
Placement, creating a Membership Council, or not
requiring members to resign at age 40.
Community Shifts
Shannon Elrod, Community Shift Coordinator
Helpful pointers for completing
your community or volunteer choices shifts:
• Please remember that there is no guarantee
that shifts will be available every month of
the year.
• Available shifts often fill up months in
advance, so don’t wait until the last minute
to sign up!
• If you do not make it to your scheduled
shift, you will have to make the missed shift
up, plus work an extra shift!
• Always arrive early to your shift to make
sure you are at the right place and that you
get credit for your shift.
Some of the issues Advisory
Planning will research this year
involve the following topics:
• The Member-at-Large (MAL) placement
• The Junior League of Lubbock’s Foundation
• The council and committee rotation system
• The Provisional Course
Advisory Planning will soon begin studying these
issues and will make recommendations to the
Executive Board before the end of the League year.
Our efforts shows how much the Executive Board cares about its
membership and the future of our organizations — something we should
all be very proud of!
In my professional life, I am an
attorney whose practice primarily encompasses
incorporating businesses and advising small
companies. The question of the importance of
bylaws is not an uncommon
one.
Bylaws are the written
rules for conduct of an
organization. Bylaws
generally provide for
meetings, elections of a
board of directors and
officers, filling vacancies,
notices, types and duties
of officers, committees,
assessments and other
routine conduct. Bylaws
are in effect a contract
among members and must
be formally adopted and/or
amended.
For members of the Junior
League of Lubbock, Inc.,
the Bylaws and Policies
provide a framework and
structure for efficient and
effective operations of our
organization. As a non-profit
organization, the Bylaws also
ensure that the organization does not lose its taxexempt
status with the Internal Revenue Service
by engaging in activities that conflict with the laws
governing non-profit organizations.
While my general advice to the owners of a small
family-owned business or sole proprietorship is to
Importance of Bylaws
Holly Haseloff, Bylaws Chairman
Can you imagine the
chaos the League
would be in if we
did not have clearly
stated Bylaws With
more than 180 active
members, including
nine executive board
members and 26
committee chairmen,
each member could
do exactly as they
chose and the
organization would
soon lose sight of its
mission statement.
Bylaws
view the company’s written bylaws as a “fall-back”
guide for when those occasional conflicts arise as
to the “order of business,” this is hardly the advice
given for clients whose businesses is governed by
many.
Can you imagine the chaos
the League would be in if we
did not have clearly stated
Bylaws With more than 180
active members, including
nine executive board members
and 26 committee chairmen,
each member could do
exactly as they choose and the
organization would soon lose
sight of its mission statement.
Members would likely disagree
on everything and the turmoil
and fighting internally would be
more than anyone could endure.
Conflict like that could likely
provide the framework for
some very nasty lawsuits. Our
organization is made up of a
diverse group of women with
many different opinions. It is
very necessary to have rules in
place for smooth government
and effective operation.
The general consensus may be that this part of
organization is dull and boring, however, bylaws
should be viewed as a necessary evil. As the JLL
starts this fiscal year, take the opportunity to refresh
your memory as to the bylaws and policies of the
League. They are available on the JLL Web site.
