OUR MISSION
To enrich and support the lives
of elders and meet their needs in
a way that honors and respects
Nikkei culture and values.
Dear Members of our Community,
How we do what we do helps define who we are; that is my personal definition of the NC Way. I credit Jeffrey for
developing this concept of the NC Way to help establish the internal culture of our organization; and the Board has
also been engaged in the questions of “who is our community and how do we define whom we serve,” “what do we
mean by elder healthcare” and “how old is elder anyway,” “how do you incorporate the concept of kimochi into the
way we do things,” and “how do you measure and evaluate its effectiveness”
In the last Tayori, Jeffrey succinctly summarized the main goals established by the Board: to maintain/enhance the
quality of life and independence of our elders through honoring the Nikkei culture and values. But like an interlocking
puzzle, this one sentence breaks into three parts with its own focus. But the key phrase is “through honoring the
Nikkei culture and values” hence Jeffrey’s idea of encapsulating this into the NC Way.
Quality of life and independence are the “what” in the Board’s governance results statement, but the “through
honoring Nikkei culture and values” is the how. And I like to think it’s the how that makes us different and unique.
Sincerely,
Dear Friends,
David Hayasaka
Board President
Earlier this year, we shared of the potential shortfall Nikkei Concerns may experience, in upwards of $700,000,
due to the state’s unprecedented $5.5 billion budget deficit and proposed draconian cuts to Medicaid
reimbursements. You may recall our battle cry of “Protect our People!” For the first six months of this year, we
committed to do everything possible to maintain the Quality of Life of our Family (residents and direct-care staff)
through respect, trust and kimochi.
As the legislative session began, over 20 “family members” of Nikkei Concerns including residents, family
members, volunteers and staff met with numerous legislators to express our concerns at the Aging Services of
Washington’s “Legislative Day” in Olympia. This launched a community effort, throughout the session, to ensure
our legislators consistently heard our collective voices. Our “family” extended to include an alliance with Kin On,
Caroline Kline Galland, and Sea Mar to step up advocacy efforts and testify at hearings. Legislators, till the “nth”
hour, including Representatives Sharon Tomiko Santos and Bob Hasegawa, worked diligently to support our elders.
During this time, management accepted a salary freeze and tightened our departmental budgets significantly.
We did all of this in a respectful, trusting and compassionate fashion with a tad bit of assertiveness thrown in!
I am honored and proud to say that our residents and direct-care staff did not feel an “ounce” of change in care
or compensation, and we appear to have “weathered the budget deficit storm” for now and have been able to
maintain, enhance, or create Kizuna (bond) for today… and tomorrow. This is the Nikkei Concerns Way.
Our Garden
Seattle Keiro Garden Project
Celebrate Life at the Birthplace of
Our Community
Every day at Nikkei Concerns, we ask
ourselves, “How do we better serve
our community What can we do”
We pursued a wonderful opportunity
to transform an underutilized outdoor
space at Seattle Keiro into a garden
sanctuary which will significantly
enhance the quality of life of our
community members. But it is more
than just a garden. It is a tribute to the
Issei, to honor their legacy.
We realize the historical significance
in creating a garden here at Keiro
because the Issei made America
their new home, right here in this
neighborhood. A vibrant Japanese
community thrived here. We lived
here. We dreamed here. We worked,
gardened, and built a life and a
community here. This is our home
base. Our garden will be a place to
reflect on our heritage. Their legacy
will be honored, and we will add our
own to celebrate for generations to
come.
Our residents will see and feel
the power of life every day as the
garden blooms around them. After
challenging exercises in our gym, the
residents who are rehabbing will be
able to step outside, feel the fresh air,
celebrate their progress, and recharge
themselves for their next challenge.
Families and friends can come and
celebrate their time together here.
Our garden will also be a place
to form kizuna (bond) with the
greater community. We envision
residents enjoying conversations with
neighborhood children over a cup of
tea and people gathering for concerts
performed by local artists on warm
summer nights. We would like young
Japanese who come to America with
big dreams, just like the Issei did, to
come here to learn about our heritage
and become connected to our
community.
Our garden will link the generations
from all over the Puget Sound region
and build strong kizuna with the
greater community.
Our garden sanctuary at Keiro will
become a cornerstone of our proud
heritage in Seattle that will bond the
past to the present and the future.
Over the generations, life happened
here, and our family continues to thrive
and grow. Life will continue, and our
garden will always be a place to
celebrate.
This is your opportunity to be part of
our collective legacy. Please invest in
the present and the future with your
heart, mind, and generosity. Help turn
a dream into a beautiful, peaceful
garden that will improve the quality of
life for so many.
The Community Speaks Out
on the Keiro Garden
The Seattle Keiro Garden is for the
community as well the residents, so
we asked the community for input.
What did we get when 35 community
members shared their thoughts and
opinions in seven focus groups We
got lots. Boy, did we ever!
Focus Group members shared candid,
confirming, creative, stimulating,
knowledgeable, heartfelt experiences.
They discussed their ideas, opinions
and added their thoughts on what is
important. They proposed how Nikkei
Concerns can learn and incorporate
ideas into future plans, specifically with
the Garden Project.
Here is a small sample of thoughts and
sentiments that focus group members
expressed:
p Nikkei Concerns is “exactly right on,
starting with the garden.”
p “It’s not about the buildings — it’s
about the garden. It’s your front
door.”
p “It isn’t a matter of age; it’s a matter
of need.”
p “If I HAD to be in a place [like
Seattle Keiro], I would enjoy a
garden. It would be calming. While
being in the garden, or looking
at it, maybe I’d even forget I’m in
nursing home.
p “Make the garden feel like it’s their
[the residents’] own backyard.”
p Nikkei Concerns “couldn’t do better
than Scott Murase.”
Seattle Keiro Garden — Progress and Plans
Plans are complete, permits are
pending. We grow ever closer to
seeing the garden in its full glory.
It promises to expand the world of
the Seattle Keiro residents and their
families. They will be able to hear
the birds chirping, watch leaves
sprouting, feel the warmth of the sun,
and smell the many familiar scents of
a garden. Natural beauty will replace
abandoned space, and many families
will soak in the sun’s warmth. The
garden will be a place of celebration
and discovery where people attend
Seattle Keiro, community-based, and
personal events. The Seattle Keiro
Garden is on its way to becoming a
destination for the whole community.
Everything is coming together.
After we receive the green light
from the city, we will host a public
groundbreaking event, and the
garden will be on its way! We expect
to complete the garden in November.
We launched our plans for the
garden at last year’s Founders’ Golf
Benefit and our 35th Anniversary
Celebration, with amazing approval
and gifts totaling over $150,000.
Our initial estimate of $500,000
holds steady as we work out actual
costs and commitments. We have
expanded the project to include a
cedar overhang extending from the
building façade over the floor-toceiling
glass doors. Residents and
their families will stay dry, even in
typical Seattle sprinkles. They can
bring the outside in (where it’s warm
and cozy), gazing at the garden
panorama through the glass doors.
We offer you the opportunity to
become a permanent part of the
garden, on two donor walls. With
a donation of $1,000 or more, you
can remember your parents and
grandparents, extend your family
legacy by honoring your children and
grandchildren, or make your mark
with your own name. Businesses and
organizations can have a permanent
acknowledgement of their unfailing
support of our efforts to bring home
and heart closer to our residents and
foster the creation of a legacy garden
in the International District.
We also offer naming rights to
significant focal points in the garden,
as well as the garden itself. For
$50,000 you may name a major
stone piece, a natural sculpture that
will inspire tranquility and strength.
The dynamic water feature is
available for $150,000, and the
entire garden will bear the name of
the generous donor who contributes
$250,000.
With 1/ 3 of our funding in place,
our fundraising plans are kicking into
gear. We participated in The Seattle
Foundation’s giveBIG campaign in
June, and will feature the Seattle
Keiro Garden in the Raise-the-Paddle
segment of our upcoming golf
tournament in September. We are
working on grant applications and
are already making personal appeals
through the Board and Community
Advisory Council. In September,
we will reach out to individuals and
families through an appeal letter. You
are our strength, our key to making
the garden our dream come true.
We need your support, and we are
confident that the community will rally
together, as enthusiastic as the donors
at last year’s events. You will receive
a visit, call, or letter asking for your
support of the garden.
The goal of the garden project is to
create a year-round space where
form meets function, creating an
environment that promotes the highest
Ayame Kai’s 2nd Annual Steak Dinner
Once Upon a Time in the West, the
Ayame Kai Guild held an event, the
Ayame Steak Dinner. For a Fistful of
Dollars, guests could enjoy a delicious
rib-eye steak, including all of the
fixin’s, with a Japanese American twist
(rice and shoyu, of course). For a Few
Dollars More, homemade desserts,
including Ellen Suzuki’s amazing pies,
and a variety of beverages rounded
out the grub.
In its second year, the event would
have made The Magnificent Seven
co-founders of Nikkei Concerns
proud. The room was packed with
hungry cowpokes, with 600
tickets sold. Technical difficulties
delayed the vittles at first, but the
cooks showed True Grit, and
perfectly cooked steaks soon
filled the plates of the diners. The
room was packed, but whether
they waited in the chow line,
moseyed through the silent
auction items, checked their
raffle tickets for a winning number, or
The Power of Giving
Your donations matter; they make a
huge difference in the everyday life
of the residents and participants of
Nikkei Concerns programs. Gifts from
individuals, families, and companies
fund unique special activities and
cultural events at Seattle Keiro and
Nikkei Manor. Your gift helps defray
expenses for well-loved programs,
like Kokoro Kai and Nikkei Horizons.
Because of your support, we can
invest your donation dollars and help
secure funding for future programs and
services.
Many employers support charitable
giving by their employees and offer
programs to simplify and/or maximize
your contributions.
I personally believe in donating to Nikkei
Concerns because the supportive doctors,
nurses, and staff at Keiro have taken good
care of my grandparents and other relatives.
As a Japanese American, I take pride in the
fact that this organization was founded by
the community, employs a diverse staff that
reflects the community, offers diverse menu
items to make their patients as comfortable
as possible, and provides a variety of
social functions to ensure the best quality of
life. Keiro means “respect for the elderly,”
so when I think of all the sacrifices my
grandparents made to enable a better life
for me, the least I can do is to give back to
the organization that has taken such good
care of my family! I am fortunate to work at
a company like Microsoft where our culture
believes in giving back to the community.
Through the Microsoft Giving Campaign
and Matching Gifts Program, my donation is
matched by the company, which provides an
even greater benefit to Nikkei Concerns!
Putting Your Donations to Work –
Workplace Campaigns
Workplace giving makes donating an
easy and worry-free activity, where
you can give to your favorite charities
(like Nikkei Concerns) via an ongoing
payroll deduction. The Government
and many companies manage their
own campaigns, and others work
with United Way and other 3rdparty
systems to show their support.
Employers offer these programs
as employee benefits, and it gives
everyone a chance to do good.
Fall is often the time when companies
kick off the campaigns, so please
consider taking part in your workplace
campaign and designate Nikkei
Concerns! Some companies (like
Microsoft) will match your gift,
doubling the power of your generosity.
Nikkei Concerns also accepts
recurring credit card donations, which
can minimize the fees that some
programs deduct from your gift. You
determine the amount, frequency,
and duration of your gift, and you
can set up a recurring donation at
any time of year. Please contact Patty
Hiroo Mastrude, Fund Development
Manager, at 206.726.6523 or
phiroo@nikkeiconcerns.org for more
information.
Getting More Bang for Your Buck –
Matching Gifts
Employer matching gifts are a powerful
way to leverage the impact of your
donation. Nearly 10,000 companies
in the United States offer their
employees the benefit of corporate
donation matching. If your company
has a matching program, all you
have to do is complete a form, often
available online. If you are unsure
if your company will match your
gift, contact your Human Resources
Department.
Did You Know…
Some companies match their employees’
donations dollar for dollar Others
will match a percentage of their retiree
donations, and some organizations
will double or even triple their board
members’ or employees’ gifts!
Some employers will match your
volunteer hours or participation in
fundraising walks.
Please see our website,
www.nikkeiconcerns.org for a list of
workplace campaign programs and
matching gift companies.
Your gift helps residents
and participants like
Mary Yuasa and gives
peace of mind to their
families. The transition
from home to Seattle Keiro
and back home again –
we’re happy to say, was
easier because of support
of generous donors.
Senior Moments
It’s great to be a senior with Nikkei Concerns! Our senior moments are full of fun and
adventure, expanding our world or discovering the world within. We honor long-held traditions
and treasure kind gestures of friendship and love. Senior moments at Nikkei Concerns are
precious memories that we hold on to with all of our might.
Louise Wright and Hiroko Akiyama had a ball at the
12th Annual Summer Festival, Seattle Keiro’s own little
bon odori. Residents from both Seattle Keiro and Nikkei
Manor and their families, volunteers, and staff watched
the colorful yukata-clad dancers; danced traditional and
contemporary numbers; and dined on somen, shaved
ice, takoyaki, and barasushi. Thanks to Consul General
and our own dear co-MC, Elsie Taniguchi.
Several crew members from the Japan Maritime Self-
Defense Force flagship ”Kashima“ shared a moment
with the Seattle Keiro residents. Six members of the
Kashima’s 20-piece band performed, and additional
crew members sang with the residents. Members of
Nikkei Jin Kai and Senior Consul Dodo of the Consulate
General of Japan - Seattle joined in the fun.
Mrs. Ayako Kurokawa, wife of the former Japanese
Ambassador to Austria and Kuwait and an
accomplished singer, delighted the Seattle Keiro
residents in May. She sang in both German and
Japanese, bringing tears to the eyes of some residents.
Nikkei Manor opened its doors to the public in a fun
and festive open house in May. Over 100 curious
visitors toured our model apartment, interacted with
the residents, listened to live koto music, and snacked
on grilled goodies from the Nikkei Manor kitchen.
Senior Moments
Three generations of Nakaharas – South China
Dinner volunteer Heather Hofmeister, her daughter,
Maya Hofmeister (volunteer-to-be), and her mom Barb
Nakahara – gave their time and support for our 31st
Annual South China Dinner. The Ayame Kai Guild has
reclaimed this event, and their leadership and presence
gave the dinner a new life and energy. Diners and
volunteers reconnected with family and friends while
they helped raise money for a good cause. People
dined in the restaurant, picked up food to go, and over
650 dinners were delivered to Seattle Keiro and Nikkei
Manor to feed hungry diners. Thanks to the 1,000+
diners, donors, and the 100+ volunteers (especially the
Guild members) for making this annual event such a hit.
Toshiko Takahashi (middle) recently
joined Kokoro Kai and was reunited with
old friends Grace Kasahara and Mary
Kosugi! Now she can reminisce about
the good old days and enjoy the good
new days at Kokoro Kai.
of Green Gables House on Prince Edward Island in addition to the
ocean-kissed natural wonders of Atlantic Canada on Nikkei Horizons’
international tour this July. The group marveled at the natural and cultural
wonders of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island,
enjoying the local cuisine, especially the lobster! Stay tuned for more
