Art Director/Production Designer
Approaching 25 years accumulated film & television experience built upon the foundation of a prior 6
years experience in theatre, all of it specifically dedicated to Art Department.
Graduating 1985 with a Diploma Theatrical Art & Design which has since been upgraded to WAAPA
Bachelor Performing Arts Production (Degree). Murray emerged from college with an already long
list of experience and stepped straight into work (literally the same day). For a few years he honed
his construction & painting skills working directly for the West Australian Opera Company. He
assisted the construction of some massive sets for every opera, ballet & State Theatre production
produced in Perth during that time. He then crossed to the ‘dark side’ of TV & film by taking a full
time position at a local production company.
Headhunted shortly thereafter by a start-up production company which went on to produce most of
the award winning TV commercials of the time. Then founding his independent Art Department
company ‘ME Scenery’ which still trades successfully to this day. During its formative years ME
Scenery grew to arguably the largest and best equipped Art Department workshop/studio Perth has
ever seen. Most work available to ME Scenery came in the form of TV commercial production offering
a massive variety of design & construction experiences, most of them shot in studio on 35mm film. As
company owner Murray gained very real & invaluable budgeting, scheduling, client liaison, staff &
contractor experience. During this time he designed & art directed more & more often, whilst
supervising construction staff & other Art Dept personal for all manner of projects including many
national & international TVCs. He also won a silver PADC award in ‘special effects’ for some highly
detailed models he made from wood ash.
He was then approached by Walt Disney Imagineering & subsequently expatriated to Tokyo Japan as
a Field Art Director for the massive construction project Tokyo DisneySea. After living in Japan for a
number of years; learning the language & working at a variety of levels, his time in Japan culminated
with the successful completion of the ‘Tower of Terror’ thrill ride within DisneySea. By this time a
‘Japanese’ Field Art Director for Walt Disney Imagineering Japan and Oriental Land Co. These were
huge projects with massive administrative systems & world class standards. A great overall
experience.
Since his return to Perth 2008, Murray has been virtually fully booked as a freelance Art
Director/Production Designer with most of the work coming in the form of TV commercial
production. In addition to TVCs there has also been plenty of other projects. Some short films, a
documentary drama and TV series Cloudstreet (Art Director) which has won some design awards
along the way.
Murray is a designer who has truly come up through the ranks. A designer who can actually build
the things he designs, experienced in a wide variety of styles having worked with Directors & D.O.P.s
from all over the world. And now you find him fresh; energised, in good health & spirits and
hankering for another major creative challenge.
