Julius Caesar – Year 10 Co-curricula Drama Production At St Aloysius’ College in 1938 an occasional play night of short plays was produced. Amongst the programme were three scenes from Shakespeare; Julius Caesar (with John Kearney (SAC 1938) our Ambassador-at-large), Macbeth and The Merchant of Venice. It then wasn’t until 1982 that Mrs Margaret Cody would attempt the first full-length Shakespeare production of Macbeth. Since then Robert Schneider (SAC 1959) directed Henry the Fourth: Part I (1991), Mrs Heidi Quinn directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2004) and I directed Twelfth Night in 2001 and Julius Caesar this year. Liam Gibson as Mark Antony over the body of Julius Caesar This is the second year that the Year 10 production has been a co-curricular one rather than a class production and it turned out to be a very talented year. Eighteen boys joined the cast along with two Year 10 girls from Loreto. In fact as we moved through production, more and more boys wanted to be in the play. There have been many design approaches to Julius Caesar over the years and it probably hasn’t been staged in a traditional Roman setting for some time. One of the most famous productions was in 1936 when Orson Welles presented it in Nazi style costumes on Broadway. I based our script on Welles’ streamlined version and I also decided that we should have the fun of staging it in togas and with an elaborate set. We painted the floor of Conaugh Mckenzie as Octavious and and Liam Gibson as Mark Antony in Julius Caesar Chris Morrow, Michael Curtin and Henry Cornwell in Julius Caesar the new Playhouse ‘marble’ and with backdrops, columns, statues, collapsible daggers, armor and togas we began rehearsing. Considering the cast were only in Year 10, the boys achieved a remarkable result. Their intellectual interpretation of the lines, their focus, their stage presence, their camaraderie during rehearsals and back stage made it a truly, powerful and effective ensemble production. Three of the principles had the daunting task of managing the major load of the lines and Liam Gibson (as Mark Antony), Ben Armitage (as Cassius) and Daniel Vickovich (as Brutus) were outstanding. Liam used his vocal experience and stage presence to make Mark Antony engage with the audience, Ben was very focused and thoughtful as Cassius and Daniel not only played out the troubled Brutus but had a strong overall handle on the direction of the play. Other strong performances came from Eric Martin as the arrogant and commanding Caesar, Chris Morrow as the more larrikin Casca, and Jack Oakley gave a very disciplined and focused performance as Decius. As we used an abridged script we had the time to add a postscript and what could be better than to stage that old favorite, Rinse the Blood off My Toga, first directed here in 1975 by Fr Donal Lane SJ, and many times since! In fact some of the cast had performed it in Mr Greg Marinan’s Year 6 class. Matthew Osborne revisited his role as Flavius Maximus and without realising it, I cast Henry Cornwell in his old role of Brutus. This spoof proved to be a lot of fun, especially on the stylish set, and capped the evening. Special mention must be made of the expert and invaluable input of the co-director, Mrs Jacqui Field, the Speech and Drama Coach here at the College who not only injected special energy into the boys’ performances but was a joy to work with. At our Drama Dinner (only the second one to be held) Mrs Margaret Cody came as a guest and was able to tell us a couple of stories about that 1982 production of Macbeth. For their wonderful performances, Ben Armitage and Daniel Vickovich share the Year 10 Acting Award.
