A Legend of Romulus
and Remus
In 753 BCE, Romulus founded Rome on the
banks of the Tiber. Years earlier he and his
brother, Remus, were set adrift on the Tiber
by their cruel uncle. They were found and
nursed by a she-wolf. Eventually, they were
discovered by Faustulus, a shepherd, who,
with his wife, Acca Laurentia, raised the twins
as their own.
When they were grown, they decided to
found a town of their own. Romulus built a
wall on the Palatine Hill, but Remus made
fun of it because it was so low. He jumped
over it and angered Romulus, who killed him.
Learning excursion to Moscow
Romulus named the town Roma after himself.
He ruled for many years and proved to be a
great leader. He did not die but disappeared
in a violent storm.
Learning Excursions
The University offers learning excursions as a feature of
extracurricular and academic life. “Learning Italy Excursions”
introduce new students to the people, art, history, language,
landscape and culture of the Italian peninsula. Trips are one
to three days long.
Other excursions—sometimes sponsored by academic departments—
feature destinations like Pompeii, Florence, Sicily,
Venice or Tuscany for weekend trips. The International Relations
trips, for example, typically offer more distant destinations such
as Brussels, Geneva, Vienna, all with international organizations
of note, or Kosovo and the Basque region where specific
international issues are manifest.
Orientation and Health Services
AUR also offers an orientation and a first year program
designed to help students make a successful transition to
our community of learners. The University provides free
medical and psychological services and information for
students about health insurance that complies with Italian
requirements.
La Lupa, the Capitoline She-wolf, is the
symbol of Rome.

role of the she-wolf
in the legend of
Rome’s founding,
the wolf was chosen
as our mascot.
