<strong>AUR</strong> Class <strong>of</strong> 2011 and a published<br />
author, is enrolled <strong>in</strong> the Masters<br />
Program at the Columbia <strong>University</strong><br />
School <strong>of</strong> Journalism<br />
“I did two <strong>in</strong>ternships <strong>in</strong> the journalism field:<br />
National Geographic and Il Manifesto, an Italian<br />
newspaper. It was great to work for both because<br />
I had the chance to experience two different fields<br />
<strong>in</strong> journalism. At Nat-Geo, I collaborated <strong>in</strong> the<br />
creation and update <strong>of</strong> the new website. At Il<br />
Manifesto I learned a lot about how a newspaper<br />
is built, and the mentality surround<strong>in</strong>g the daily<br />
choice <strong>of</strong> news and assessment <strong>of</strong> news values.”<br />
AN INTERNSHIP is an opportunity<br />
for students to work for an<br />
employer <strong>in</strong> a career field that<br />
matches their major and <strong>in</strong>terests.<br />
Interns are able to apply<br />
the theory <strong>of</strong> the classroom with<br />
the reality <strong>of</strong> the workplace,<br />
have a chance to observe, participate,<br />
and grow to understand<br />
the work<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
environment. With <strong>in</strong>ternship<br />
experiences, students ga<strong>in</strong> the<br />
skills needed to seek employment<br />
with confidence.<br />
<strong>AUR</strong> prepares student well for<br />
these experiences. A Supervisor<br />
at the NATO Defense College<br />
wrote:<br />
In terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual capacity she<br />
demonstrated a keen <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational security affairs. She<br />
also displayed an unusual level <strong>of</strong><br />
cultural sensitivity and tact which<br />
earned her the respect <strong>of</strong> both the<br />
senior <strong>of</strong>ficers on course and the<br />
staff <strong>of</strong> the NATO Defense College.<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Services Office provides <strong>AUR</strong><br />
students with an exclusive onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
resource – the World <strong>of</strong> Work<br />
Blog - where opportunities for<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternships, jobs, and graduate<br />
school are posted.<br />
Anias Engelmajer<br />
International Relations<br />
<strong>AUR</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 2011 has accepted a<br />
position at the FAO<br />
“I <strong>in</strong>terned <strong>in</strong> the emergencies report<strong>in</strong>g unit at<br />
FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization <strong>of</strong> the<br />
UN). My Internship focused on <strong>in</strong>ternational development<br />
and complex emergencies. It <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>g, edit<strong>in</strong>g and translat<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> skill set that<br />
I acquired will be important for any future job that<br />
I could have with an <strong>in</strong>ternational organization –<br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g this experience more than reward<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

“I Interned at Bioversity International <strong>in</strong> the F<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
Department. It was a great experience for me. My<br />
superiors were helpful and entrusted me with a lot <strong>of</strong><br />
responsibility. I learned how to use a new account<strong>in</strong>g<br />
s<strong>of</strong>tware system, developed my skills <strong>in</strong> Excel<br />
and managed travel expenses for the department. I<br />
def<strong>in</strong>itely consider it time well spent!”<br />
