Studies.

The BA in Interdisciplinary Studies provides
choice and flexibility for students.
The program will develop the ability to
make meaningful and effective connections across
disciplines, to identify and incorporate discussions
of cultural, political, artistic and religious diversity
and to critically analyze and evaluate alternative
points of view. This degree enables undergraduates,
in conjunction with their academic advisor,
to foster and develop personal interests and assemble
a program of “clusters” of courses that do
not fall either within the American University’s
existing range of degree program options or under
a single, conventional, academic heading.

Paul Gwynne received his Ph.D. in Combined
Historical Studies from the Warburg Institute,
University of London and since living in Rome
has successfully completed the two-year
diploma in Palaeography and Diplomatics
from the Scuola di Paleografia, Archivistica e
Diplomatica at the Archivio Secreto Vaticano.
As well as teaching a wide variety of courses
in Classics, Professor Gwynne is also responsible
for Interdisciplinary Studies. His research
interests include the reception of the Classical
Tradition with particular emphasis on the development
of Humanism in Renaissance Rome.
His first book, entitled Poets and Princes: the
Panegyric Poetry of Johannes Michael Nagonius,
will be published by Brepols as the first
in a new series on Medieval and Renaissance
Court Cultures. He is currently completing an
annotated edition of the works of the Neo-
Latin poet Francesco Sperulo (fl. 1490-c.1530)
and researching the artistic and literary patronage
of the infamous Cesare Borgia.
