<strong>The</strong> BA <strong>in</strong> Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary Studies provides<br />
choice and flexibility for students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> program will develop the ability to<br />
make mean<strong>in</strong>gful and effective connections across<br />
discipl<strong>in</strong>es, to identify and <strong>in</strong>corporate discussions<br />
<strong>of</strong> cultural, political, artistic and religious diversity<br />
and to critically analyze and evaluate alternative<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> view. This degree enables undergraduates,<br />
<strong>in</strong> conjunction with their academic advisor,<br />
to foster and develop personal <strong>in</strong>terests and assemble<br />
a program <strong>of</strong> “clusters” <strong>of</strong> courses that do<br />
not fall either with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>American</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
exist<strong>in</strong>g range <strong>of</strong> degree program options or under<br />
a s<strong>in</strong>gle, conventional, academic head<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Paul Gwynne received his Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> Comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
Historical Studies from the Warburg Institute,<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> London and s<strong>in</strong>ce liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Rome</strong><br />
has successfully completed the two-year<br />
diploma <strong>in</strong> Palaeography and Diplomatics<br />
from the Scuola di Paleografia, Archivistica e<br />
Diplomatica at the Archivio Secreto Vaticano.<br />
As well as teach<strong>in</strong>g a wide variety <strong>of</strong> courses<br />
<strong>in</strong> Classics, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Gwynne is also responsible<br />
for Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary Studies. His research<br />
<strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong>clude the reception <strong>of</strong> the Classical<br />
Tradition with particular emphasis on the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> Humanism <strong>in</strong> Renaissance <strong>Rome</strong>.<br />
His first book, entitled Poets and Pr<strong>in</strong>ces: the<br />
Panegyric Poetry <strong>of</strong> Johannes Michael Nagonius,<br />
will be published by Brepols as the first<br />
<strong>in</strong> a new series on Medieval and Renaissance<br />
Court Cultures. He is currently complet<strong>in</strong>g an<br />
annotated edition <strong>of</strong> the works <strong>of</strong> the Neo-<br />
Lat<strong>in</strong> poet Francesco Sperulo (fl. 1490-c.1530)<br />
and research<strong>in</strong>g the artistic and literary patronage<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>famous Cesare Borgia.<br />
