Students are attracted to our program because <strong>of</strong> our ideal<br />
location, <strong>in</strong>novative and extensive program <strong>of</strong> courses, expert<br />
and enthusiastic faculty, <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary approach, <strong>in</strong>timacy<br />
<strong>of</strong> scale and the participatory style <strong>of</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g we<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ramsey-Portolano has taught Italian<br />
Language, Literature and Culture courses <strong>in</strong> the<br />
United States and Italy for fifteen years. Her<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>cipal areas <strong>of</strong> research are Gender Studies,<br />
19th & 20th century Italian women writers and<br />
Italian film, particularly from the early and fascist<br />
periods. She has published articles on Luch<strong>in</strong>o<br />
Visconti’s Ossessione, Carm<strong>in</strong>e Gallone’s<br />
Malombra, Ig<strong>in</strong>o Ugo Tarchetti’s Fosca, the<br />
women writers Neera, Sibilla Aleramo and Dacia<br />
Mara<strong>in</strong>i and on the theme <strong>of</strong> homosexuality <strong>in</strong><br />
Pietro Aret<strong>in</strong>o’s Il Marescalco. Most recently<br />
she has co-edited a special issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Italianist<br />
entitled Reth<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Neera.<br />

I chose <strong>AUR</strong> because <strong>of</strong> its challeng<strong>in</strong>g<br />
curriculum <strong>in</strong> Italian Studies. I decided on this<br />
major as I have always loved the language and<br />
culture <strong>of</strong> this boot-shaped pen<strong>in</strong>sula.<br />
I have embraced the opportunity at <strong>AUR</strong> to<br />
befriend students and faculty from all over<br />
the world. Our multi-l<strong>in</strong>gual community has<br />
furthered my understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Italy and the<br />
world. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational faculty and staff are<br />
always will<strong>in</strong>g to spend time to help students.<br />
