scleroderma and fibrosis. This is also linked with the National Service for the treatment of
primary pulmonary hypertension. There is an excellent post-graduate education within the
department covering rheumatology and general medicine, and in particular the trainee would
have the opportunity to work at the interface between basic research into fibrosis, and
clinical work in systemic sclerosis. Current areas of interest include the role of the epidermis
in scleroderma, intracellular signalling mechanisms involved in fibrotic response, regulation
of signalling by eicosainoids, and the role of growth factors such as connective tissue growth
factor in the fibrotic response. Laboratory expertise with which the trainee can become
familiar include many state-of-the-art techniques in cell and molecular biology.
The Department of Infectious Diseases at the Royal Free has developed a range of subspeciality
interests that are high on the national health agenda, including hospital-acquired
infection and infection control, TB, chronic viral hepatitis and HIV/hepatitis co-infection. In
addition, it incorporates a programme of basic research into viral pathogenesis. The
Academic F2 would be offered a focussed clinical or laboratory project in the area that
interests them, combined with specialist clinical experience in their chosen area that will
underpin their research and enable them to understand the wider context for their work.
Supervision will be provided by one of the sub-specialist leads, all of who have considerable
experience in education and training of academic trainees. For further information please
contact Dr Michael Jacobs (m.jacobs@medsch.ucl.ac.uk).
