The Academic GP rotation combines an attachment to a GP practice for 2 days and 3 days
in the department of General Practice. The aim is to gain a greater understanding of the
process of Academic Medicine, contribute to an existing research project, and gain some
teaching experience with undergraduate medical students. We hope the F2 will get an
opportunity to present their work at the regional Academic GP conference in January or the
national conference in July.
Examples of recent F2 research experience
Research into the use of the computer in the consultation with the primary care informatics
group. The group has developed a unique multi-method approach to recording the fine detail
of the consultation. The tool can observe the impact of the computer on the consultation.
One F2 looked at the use of silence in the consultation. Trial of home blood pressure
monitoring in stroke patients. This is a large community based study with recruitment from
the local stoke clinics. One F2 developed a questionnaire to assess whether monitoring
home BP caused increased anxiety. The exact details of the project may change depending
on the life cycle of the research. Some F2 doctors have in addition continued existing
research work, and this is acceptable as long as it doesn't detract from the departmental
work.
