esearch techniques in clinical medicine. There is a huge choice of possible supervisors and projects and trainees will be encouraged to identify supervisors in their FY1 year. Occasionally trainees may have particular academic projects they wish to pursue outside the formal Department of Medicine – such projects will generally be facilitated if deemed to be of high quality, well supervised and pertinent to the trainee’s academic aspirations. Trainees will attend a variety of laboratory meetings and core lectures in medical research, have regular tutorials with an academic mentor which will include career guidance, and be expected to write a review article and a paper based on their laboratory project. The F2 trainee will carry out limited clinical duties, including dynamic pituitary function testing, and will then assess and interpret the results. We have dedicated metabolic medicine ward space both at Charing Cross and at Hammersmith Hospitals. The Academic Chemical Pathology academic block is based in the Diabetes and Endocrinology research laboratory at the Department of Investigative Medicine, Hammersmith Hospital. The laboratory’s research is both clinical and laboratory based and is conducted by a range of medical doctors and scientists. Current research foci include work on appetite regulation and the role of gut hormones in satiety and weight control. Other research being undertaken is in reproductive medicine, such as the role of the hormone kisspeptin in fertility. An academic foundation trainee will be incorporated into the laboratory’s research themes during their four month research block and is expected to actively participate in a number of defined research projects. This involves working with doctoral and post doctoral students and a range of other professionals. Additionally, the trainee is expected to partake in the www.stfs.org.uk/student/academic-programmes Email: tfsacademicrecruitment@stfs.org.uk Page 36 of 70 Updated: 27 May 2010
