Barts and the <strong>London</strong> NHS Trust<br />
Barts and The <strong>London</strong> NHS Trust (BLT) is one of the biggest and busiest NHS trusts in the<br />
UK. Its hospitals:<br />
Admit over 84 000 patients a year<br />
Undertake over 93 000 operations a year<br />
Treat over 103 000 patients a year in the Accident and Emergency Department<br />
See over 467 000 outpatients a year<br />
Employ some 6000 staff<br />
The Trust has seven clinical directorates with a wide range of medical, surgical and<br />
emergency specialties, many of which are recognised as being at the leading edge of<br />
progress. The throughput of acute medical cases is substantial.<br />
BLT has continued to develop as a major centre of educational and clinical excellence.<br />
Working closely with the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Trust provides high quality<br />
teaching to all undergraduate medical and dental students during their local placements. The<br />
Trust has over 400 trainees at different stages of training.<br />
There is an extremely close relationship, both geographical and working, between the Trust<br />
and the School of Medicine.<br />
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust<br />
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust operates across two main<br />
sites at Queen’s and King George hospitals. The Trust serves a population of around<br />
700,000, from a wide range of social and ethnic groups, making it one of the largest acute<br />
hospital trusts in England.<br />
King George Hospital was built from new in 1993. It has an A&E department, alongside<br />
other acute services consisting of all the major specialties of large district general hospitals.<br />
A joint cancer centre with St Bartholomew’s Hospital in <strong>London</strong> and a regional neuroscience<br />
centre at Queen’s are offered in addition to these services.<br />
Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust<br />
Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust is an Associated University Hospital closely<br />
linked with St Bartholomew’s and the Royal <strong>London</strong> School of Medicine and Dentistry. It is a<br />
major District General Hospital with 760 beds on a single site within the <strong>London</strong> Borough of<br />
Waltham Forest.<br />
The Trust provides hospital services to people mainly from Waltham Forest, west Redbridge,<br />
Essex and east <strong>London</strong>, funded by service level agreements with commissioners of<br />
services. More than three quarters of its income is derived from the local Primary Care<br />
Trusts: Waltham Forest PCT and Redbridge PCT.<br />
Newham University Hospital NHS Trust<br />
Newham University Hospital NHS Trust is an Acute Trust caring for one of the youngest,<br />
fastest-growing and most diverse populations in the country.<br />
As specialists in local healthcare, they are recognised nationally for their work: the teams in<br />
Diabetes and Bilingual Health Advocacy have both won national Health and Social Care<br />
awards; Chest Pain Clinic, headed by Evening Standard Doctor of the Year, Kula Ranjan, is<br />
a Beacon Site; and they have been nationally recognised for their work in communications,<br />
Patient and Public Involvement and good corporate citizenship.<br />
