The post aims to encourage trainees to understand the role and importance of diagnostic
microbiology in clinical decision making, to use microbiology services effectively, and to gain
a better understanding of infection prevention and control and public health management.
The trainee will be encouraged to assess educational needs in undergraduate or
postgraduate training in microbiology.
Experience of the clinical and laboratory aspects of microbiology will be provided. Clinical
work will include ward rounds, audits and multidisciplinary ITU rounds twice a week. In
addition there will be an opportunity to participate in ward rounds on the Infection Control
Ward/Isolation Unit thrice weekly as part of the multidisciplinary infection control team. There
will be a daily clinical case discussion regarding appropriate treatment in various clinical
syndromes. Bench training over a 6-week period will provide experience of processing
samples, staining, interpretation, reporting of culture results and identification of pathogens.
Academic day release will be provided for this part of the rotation. Release will also be given
for the generic FY2 teaching sessions.
