Cambridge Ward MAU is situated adjacent to the A&E department at the Royal <strong>London</strong><br />

Hospital and deals with a wide variety of acute medical problems. The medical staff of the<br />

unit has expanded considerably since its inception. It was highly commended in an<br />

inspection visit by the Royal <strong>College</strong> of Physicians in 2005 and has been held up as a model<br />

for the management of acute medical disorders across the UK.<br />

The successful applicant will receive supervised training in the management of patients with<br />

acute medical illnesses and will be taught the skills needed to manage those patients. The<br />

F2 trainee will work under the supervision of one of the more senior members of the medical<br />

team and will participate in the admission, assessment and treatment planning for newly<br />

admitted patients. He/she will learn about the treatment and management of a wide range of<br />

medical disorders and the post provides great opportunities for learning and skill acquisition.<br />

The trainee will be able to acquire many of the competencies required by the Foundation<br />

Programme while working on the Unit.<br />

The Royal <strong>London</strong> provides a Hospital at Night service and the successful applicant will<br />

either be part of that team or will work out-of-hours on the MAU, depending on seniority and<br />

levels of cover available.<br />

Psychiatry attachment – based at the Centre for Psychiatry, Wolfson Institute of<br />

Preventive Medicine, Charterhouse Square, St Bartholomew’s Hospital.<br />

Academic Leads – Professor S.Stansfeld, Professor K. Bhui, Professor P. White.<br />

The trainee will be based at the Centre for Psychiatry, Charterhouse Square. The Centre<br />

has research interests in epidemiological, cultural and social psychiatry as well as liaison<br />

psychiatry and interactions between physical and psychological ill-health.<br />

The clinical experience will be general adult psychiatry. The exact content will depend on the<br />

candidate’s interests and the existing range of clinical and research opportunities. There are<br />

also possibilities for more clinical experience within East <strong>London</strong> Mental Health Trust based<br />

at Mile End Hospital.<br />

These include attachments focussing on mind-body interactions, rehabilitation psychiatry,<br />

and psychotherapy, prescribing practice, ethical decision-making and legal aspects of<br />

mental health care tailored to individual trainees. This post will cater for doctors with a<br />

primary interest in either research or teaching.<br />

The trainee will have the opportunity to obtain some training in research methods including<br />

epidemiology and basic clinical trials, and attending the Mental Health Assessment and/or<br />

Transcultural Module of the MSc in Transcultural Mental Healthcare. They will also be<br />

involved in research through completing a systematic review of a relevant topic, doing<br />

secondary analysis of existing data, completing pilot work for a research study or<br />
