YEAR OF FAITH: FAMILY RESOURCES
READ AND REFLECT
The Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes), Part II, chapter 1 (para 48)
Authentic married love is caught up into divine love and is governed and enriched by Christ’s redeeming
power and the saving activity of the Church, so that this love may lead the spouses to God with powerful effect
and may aid and strengthen them in sublime office of being a father or a mother.(6) For this reason Christian
spouses have a special sacrament by which they are fortified and receive a kind of consecration in the duties and
dignity of their state.(7) By virtue of this sacrament, as spouses fulfill their conjugal and family obligation, they are
penetrated with the spirit of Christ, which suffuses their whole lives with faith, hope and charity. Thus they
increasingly advance the perfection of their own personalities, as well as their mutual sanctification, and hence
contribute jointly to the glory of God.
As a result, with their parents leading the way by example and family prayer, children and indeed everyone
gathered around the family hearth will find a readier path to human maturity, salvation and holiness. Graced with
the dignity and office of fatherhood and motherhood, parents will energetically acquit themselves of a duty which
devolves primarily on them, namely education and especially religious education.

Indispensable Resources for the
Year of Faith
Meditation
The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a
precious and indispensable tool for providing
everyone with a systematic knowledge of the
content of the faith. It is one of the most
important fruits of the Second Vatican Council
(see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 11).
The Year of Faith, as the pope envisions it, is first
of all an invitation to rekindle the joyful
enthusiasm of each disciple’s personal encounter
with Christ. This personal encounter should
prompt us to renew our commitment to a selfless
love of neighbor. For this “journey that lasts a
lifetime,” as the pope describes it, the Church
provides “travel companions,” practical resources
to inspire and inform. For the “heart” of faith, our
personal relationship with Christ, needs also a
“mind” well-formed in the truth that Jesus, Friend
of our souls and Lord of the Church, has revealed
to us. As this Year of Faith begins, therefore, each
Catholic—individually or as a family —should
acquire the Church’s official resources, readily
available at bookstores or online. If the full
Catechism appears too daunting, consider the
abridged Compendium of the Catechism, crossreferenced
to the complete Catechism, featuring
artwork selected by Pope Benedict and
accompanied by his commentary, with an
appendix of basic prayers. The bright yellow
YouCat: Youth Catechism, written and designed
especially for young people, features a format
with contemporary graphics and writing style, as
well as a library of quotes from sources ancient
and modern, making it popular with the not-soyoung,
too.

CATHOLIC PROFESSIONAL & BUSINESS CLUB
DECEMBER BREAKFAST – CHRISTMAS PARTY
Join the CP&BC on Friday, December 14th to help ring
in the holidays at our annual Christmas party. This
year’s celebration will focus on networking, providing
everyone a chance to meet and talk with fellow Catholic
professionals. We’ll also be collecting new, unwrapped,
toys to be distributed to needy local children this holiday
season through Catholic Charities.
Reservations are required for the December 14th
breakfast, held at Pardini’s, and can be made by calling
Denise Correia at 434-2722 or by visiting
www.cpbcfresno.org. Doors open at 7:00am for coffee
and networking. The program concludes at 8:30am The
cost is $15 for members and $20 for guests.
The season of Advent is upon us and with
Christmas fast approaching, it is our desire
to help those most vulnerable. It is our
prayer and hope that we can bring a smile to
the families who come here for help. For your information,
Catholic Charities has served over 25,000 families’ diocesan
wide this year alone and have given away almost 2 million
pounds of food. In this difficult time and the challenges of an
uncertain economy affect us all, please consider the treasure
you have been given and share with those most in need. For
every dollar donated, 88 cents goes back to programs and
services.

El mundo no parece tan grande como para contener el
alborozo que causa la primera lectura. En la lectura del
Evangelio, el Imperio Romano tampoco es lo
suficientemente grande. Los grandes poderes de Roma se
designan y se hacen esperar por la salvación de Dios. Y
encontramos a Pablo que medita gozosamente en lo que
importa, en lo que realmente cuenta. De acuerdo con
Baruc, la ciudad de Jerusalén es como una persona que en
puntillas espera la salvación de Dios, que viene del Este.
Los que fueron llevados a pie, con la cabeza gacha,
regresan ahora orgullosos. Todo el camino está
pavimentado. Al lado del camino hay árboles fragantes y
frondosos. No puede haber algo mejor que eso, ¿no es
así Bueno, sí puede haber algo mejor. Porque una voz
grita en el desierto. Aquí comienza la salvación de Dios.
