As the population ages and more people with disabilities seek to drive, occupational therapists will
increasingly need to address this instrumental activity of daily living with their clients. The key objectives
of this one day study day are to raise the profile of driving for occupational therapists and to empower
occupational therapists to be confident in dealing with the issue of driving for their clients.
Led by Sue Vernon and Kirsty Flint who are experts in the field of driver assessment as well as being
occupational therapists and qualified Driving Standards Agency Approved driving instructors, this interactive
event will provide information on licensing and professional procedures, demonstrate how to map clinical
assessments to functions relevant to driving, examine a variety of evidence based assessment tools as well
as providing guidance on when to refer clients to specialists. Guidance will also be given on how to support
clients around issues relating to driving cessation.
Occupational Therapist Sue Vernon began her driver assessment
work at Banstead Mobility Centre (now QEF Mobility Centre) in
1991 and qualified as a Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving
Instructor (Car) in 1992 becoming the first dual qualified OT/ADI in
the UK. Sue left the mobility centre in 2007 and established her own
business, Surrey DriveAbility and a charity, Guernsey DriveAbility while
working part time for a vehicle conversion specialist providing high
technology driving controls for drivers with complex disabilities. Sue is
now fully self-employed, running two specially equipped assessment
vehicles and her expertise and wide experience enables her to work
effectively with the high level of complex trauma at Headley Court.

Kirsty Flint qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1996 and
has since worked in a wide variety of clinical settings. She joined
Sue Vernon at QEF Mobility Centre in 2000 and gained approved
academic qualifications from Greenwich University and The Forum
of Mobility Centres before qualifying as an Driving Standards Agency
Approved Driving Instructor (Car) in 2004. During this time she was
promoted to be the Clinical Manager at the Mobility Centre, which
included the design and delivery of training courses on driving and
outdoor mobility to healthcare professionals, driving instructors,
and external organisations including Motability, Vauxhall, BHTA, and
BSM. Following a career break Kirsty returned to driving assessment
in 2006 at the Regional Driving Assessment Centre (RDAC) as Lead
Clinician. Kirsty has recently re-written COT’s Briefing 26 to enable
OTs to directly refer their patients/ clients to DVLA and has also
been appointed as an Associate Tutor at Chester University on the
Professional Certificate in Driving Assessment and Outdoor Mobility
All College of Occupational Therapists events are intended to support members continuing

Terms of booking
Fees: The conference fee includes registration,
conference materials, lunch and refreshments. It does
not include travel or accommodation.
Cancellation and substitutions: Refunds will not
be made without a written request. Cancellations
made 14 days or more before the event will incur a
charge of 20% of the registration fee. Cancellations
made after this date will incur a charge of 60% of the
registration fee. Cancellations on the day of the event
or ‘no shows’ will not be refunded. Substitutions can
be made at any time, but written notification must be
sent to the Events & Marketing Officer.
