The goliath stick insect Eurycnema goliath is an innocuous species.<br />
The female goliath stick insect has sharp spines on her hind legs that<br />
may draw blood on soft skin, and this would be most likely to happen<br />
when they are in a defensive posture (A. Polak, pers. comm.). There<br />
is also a possibility of catching a zoonoses such as a bacteria, fungus<br />
or virus that the phasmid may be carrying. Always clean the area<br />
where phasmids are being kept in a hygienic manner and also wash<br />
hands before and after handling the phasmids.<br />
