Antennae – One of the paired, flexible sensory <strong>org</strong>ans on the head of an insect, myriapod, or<br />
crustacean.<br />
Cerci - A pair of appendages at the posterior end of the abdomen.<br />
Denticulated - Having fine tooth-like projections.<br />
Exoskeleton – A hard outer structure, such as the shell of an insect or crustacean, that provides<br />
protection or support for an <strong>org</strong>anism.<br />
Frass - Solid fecal material produced by insects.<br />
Holotype - A single specimen designated as the name-bearing type of a species or subspecies<br />
when it was established, or the single specimen on which such a taxon was based when no type<br />
was specified.<br />
Incineration – To consume by fire; burn to ashes.<br />
Innocuous – Having no adverse effect; harmless.<br />
Mesonotum - The upper surface of the second (middle) thoracic segment (mesothorax) of the<br />
insect body.<br />
Metanotum - The upper surface of the third (posterior) thoracic segment (metathorax).<br />
Nymph – The larval form of certain insects, usually resembling the adult form but small and<br />
lacking fully developed wings.<br />

like lens. <strong>Insect</strong>s may have a single ocellus or they may have a small group of ocelli (up to<br />
three).<br />
Operculum - A lid or covering to a chamber-like structure.<br />
