ROSEBURG HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY<br />
CODE OF CONDUCT<br />
I. Standards <strong>of</strong> <strong>Conduct</strong><br />
As a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Roseburg</strong> High School Chapter <strong>of</strong> National Honor Society (NHS), you<br />
are a public figure responsible for representing your school district in the most positive way.<br />
Your behavior and actions must be exemplary at all times and befitting the expectations <strong>of</strong><br />
your peers, advisors, school district administration, community, and faculty council. You<br />
must also conduct yourself so as not to impair, but benefit the welfare or educational<br />
opportunities <strong>of</strong> others in the <strong>Roseburg</strong> School District.<br />
In addition to the rules and regulations listed in the <strong>Roseburg</strong> High School Student<br />
Handbook, this <strong>Code</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Conduct</strong> will also govern all students who participate in National<br />
Honor Society. The <strong>Code</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Conduct</strong> shall apply to any violation on or <strong>of</strong>f school premises<br />
both during the school year and during vacation.<br />
Once you are established as a member <strong>of</strong> the National Honor Society, you are expected to<br />
uphold this conduct code until completion <strong>of</strong> your eligibility or such time that you are no<br />
longer a member <strong>of</strong> NHS.<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> the NHS at <strong>Roseburg</strong> High School are subject to the standards and conduct<br />
embodied in the following:<br />
1. State, federal, civil, and criminal laws;<br />
2. All <strong>Roseburg</strong> High School policies governing student conduct;<br />
3. The <strong>Roseburg</strong> High School Chapter NHS Rules.<br />
Violation <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> these standards <strong>of</strong> conduct may result in discipline, as further described in<br />
Part II below. The failure <strong>of</strong> a member to report to his or her advisor, within 48 hours,<br />
regarding any violation <strong>of</strong> the above standards <strong>of</strong> conduct may also result in discipline, as<br />
further described below.<br />
Character and Leadership: NHS members are expected to demonstrate exemplary character<br />
and leadership traits by<br />
a. Upholding principles <strong>of</strong> morality and ethics.<br />
b. Showing courtesy, concern and respect for others.<br />
c. Observing instructions and rules, punctuality and faithfulness in obligations both<br />
inside and outside the classroom, including while participating in NHS projects.<br />
d. Manifesting truthfulness in acknowledging obedience <strong>of</strong> rules, refusing to cheat,<br />
and showing an unwillingness to pr<strong>of</strong>it by the mistakes <strong>of</strong> others.<br />
e. Demonstrating leadership in promoting school activities, not just those organized<br />
by NHS.<br />
f. Demonstrating academic initiative.<br />
g. Demonstrating positive leadership in the classroom, at work, and in school<br />
activities.<br />
II. Dismissal and Disciplinary Process<br />
1. Dismissal or other discipline may vary depending on the violation.<br />
a. Warning: The issuance <strong>of</strong> a written warning.
. Honor Board: NHS members elected to the chapter Honor Board meet and<br />
determine an appropriate course <strong>of</strong> action for member.<br />
c. Faculty Council: Faculty council members meet for membership review.<br />
2. Violation <strong>of</strong> Criminal Law. When a student has engaged in conduct that is in violation <strong>of</strong><br />
criminal law, whether the conduct constitutes a misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor,<br />
felony, or any other class <strong>of</strong> criminal conduct, the advisor must report that information to<br />
the Faculty Council.<br />
3. Violations <strong>of</strong> school policies laid out in the <strong>Roseburg</strong> Extra/Co-Curricular <strong>Code</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Conduct</strong> also govern NHS membership. For NHS involvement, the following definitions<br />
will apply:<br />
1. “Suspension from the privileged activity in which a student is participating<br />
until the end <strong>of</strong> the current extra-curricular activity” in section 4.2.1 shall<br />
instead become an automatic referral to the NHS Honor Board.<br />
2. “Shall be dismissed from the team or performance in competition or <strong>of</strong>fice<br />
for a calendar year” in section 5.1 shall instead become an automatic<br />
referral to the faculty council for possible dismissal from NHS.<br />
3. “Suspension from privileged activity in which the student is participating for<br />
a period <strong>of</strong> no less than one game or seven days” in section 7.1.1 shall<br />
become an automatic referral to the NHS Honor Board.<br />
4. “Shall be suspended from the sport or activity for the duration <strong>of</strong> the sport or<br />
activity” in section 7.2.1 shall become immediate referral to the NHS faculty<br />
council for possible dismissal.<br />
4. Falling below the required GPA will be grounds for dismissal. Members must maintain a<br />
3.5. Grade point averages will be checked at the end <strong>of</strong> each semester. Students who<br />
fall below the required GPA will receive a written probationary warning and will have one<br />
semester to bring the GPA up to the required level.<br />
5. Students who fail to complete required service projects and/or fail to complete club<br />
participation requirements will receive a written probationary warning letter once per year<br />
and have one semester to remedy the deficiency.<br />
6. Any in-school suspension or out-<strong>of</strong>-school suspension will result in a review by the NHS<br />
Honor Board or review by the Faculty Council for possible dismissal.
