At our July 2008 Ofsted inspection, we were
praised for our outstanding student support
and good teaching and learning, making us an
excellent choice for your studies.
As a student in 2010, you will join us as we
develop our brand new £42.8m town centre
campus in Skelmersdale offering state of the
art education and training facilities fit for the
21st century. The new campus will open in
September 2011.

We offer a variety of daytime, evening
and work based learning courses for
adults who are looking to come to
college, all in a friendly, welcoming
environment. Adults may enrol onto a
variety of full time courses, however
as many of these courses are
designed for 16-18 year olds you may
wish to study a more adult orientated
programme such as Access to Higher
Education.

How to Apply/Entry Requirements
How to Apply
• Decide which course you would like to study at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk
College.
•
Confirm if you wish to study for an Apprenticeship, full time course or both.
• Complete the application form online or alternatively call 01695 52300 for
an application form to be sent to you.
•
Submit your application.
• When we have received your application we will invite you to an interview
in college with a course adviser and subject to successful interview will
offer you a conditional place at our college.
• Once you have accepted your offer of a place you will be invited to college
for a curriculum day. These days help you become more familiar with the
college and your new place of study, you will get to meet your tutor and
new friends, view facilities and find out more about college life. You will
also complete an initial assessment.

In August we will invite you into college to complete your enrolment.
Your new course will start in early September.

Entry Requirements
For students aged 19+ formal entry qualifications are not always necessary.
You will be asked to attend a college interview where we will discuss your
previous experience and skills. You will also be asked to complete an initial
assessment to make sure you start at the level to suit you.
We offer a variety of courses for adults who are looking to come to college,
all offered in a friendly, welcoming environment.

To help you to make an informed decision on the right career and education
choices for you, we hold advice and guidance events of the first Wednesday
of each month (term-time only) 4.30pm-7pm at the Westbank Campus,
Skelmersdale as follows:

The new college campus in Skelmersdale will boast well-equipped
study rooms and an IT suite with internet and email access,
alongside our commercial bistro, coffee shop, salons
and performance studio.
The campus will also feature an
exclusive Higher Education study
area, which will be WiFi enabled
creating a hotspot learning
environment.

Westbank Campus
Our Westbank Campus is a friendly campus near to Skelmersdale town
centre that is easy to access, no matter how you travel.
The campus has recently benefited from extensive refurbishment of the
student areas including R Space refectory and common room and the
poolside lounge. There has been investment to our Hair, Barbering, Beauty
and Holistic Therapy Salons and we have spent £750K on IT, making us an
excellent choice for your studies.
Ormskirk Campus
Our Ormskirk Campus located in the centre of the historic market town of
Ormskirk, offers a perfect place in which to study. Students studying at this
campus frequently comment on the warm, friendly community atmosphere,
you will find it easy to make friends here.
Students studying here in 2010 can expect brand new IT facilities, relaxing
social space, including our coffee shop Cafeology, and welcoming teaching
and support services.
The Ormskirk Campus is also the base of our Business Solutions

West Lancashire Construction Academy
The West Lancashire Construction Academy is our £2.3m purpose built
Construction, Building Services & Engineering Skills Centre that offers
you experience and skills in a quality learning environment preparing you
perfectly for a career in the industry.
“The Street” runs through the centre of the academy leading off into each of
the main construction areas of Bricklaying, Carpentry & Joinery, Electrical
Installation, Motor Vehicle Engineering, Plastering, Performing Engineering
Operations and Plumbing & Gas. You can also take advantage of a cup of
coffee or grab a bite to eat or perhaps relax in between studies in “The Loft”.

Facilities
Learner Zone
The Learner Zones are available at all Campuses. These vibrant areas of
study are available to all students on a drop-in basis including before and
after lessons and in college holidays.
Resources include: new PC’s with internet access, books, journals and multimedia
facilities. Staff are always on hand to assist with IT skills, research and
preparation for assignments.
Places to Eat and Relax
Our students can relax and unwind in one of our newly refurbished eating
areas:

The Loft, West Lancashire Construction Academy
Whether you are looking for a quick bite to eat or a freshly prepared hot
meal* there is something available for you. You can choose from a selection
of dishes, sandwiches, snacks, drinks and confectionery (vegetarian options
also available).

Fitness Factors – Sports Complex
For students who are interested in keeping fit, Fitness Factors Sports
Complex is available at our Westbank Campus and offers a fully equipped
gym housing a variety of equipment including free weights, jogging, cycling
and rowing machines with staff available to provide fitness programmes.
There are group activities on offer such as badminton, football, netball,
volleyball or swimming where you can keep fit whilst having fun.
Relaxation techniques are also available in the Sports Injuries Clinics for
overused and tired muscles or perhaps you would like to unwind in our sauna
and steam room.

The Phoenix Theatre is the college’s performing arts venue. For details of

Apprenticeships for Adults
If I am over 25 can I enrol on an Apprenticeship?
Yes, Adult Apprenticeships are available for those currently working for 16
hours or more.
What are the benefits?
Apprenticeships enable you to improve your literacy and numeracy skills
as well as being assessed (in the workplace) in a practical way.
To gain a nationally recognised qualification at level 2 or 3.
What do I do next?
To apply for an Apprenticeship please complete the application at the back

then arrange to meet you either in college or at your workplace to discuss
the right programme for you.

Foundation Degrees
Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that combine
academic study with workplace learning. They have been designed jointly by
universities, colleges and employers, and are available in a range of workrelated

Part-Time Courses for Adults
We offer a variety of part time courses for adults.
If you would like to progress in your current job, learn and acquire new skills
or return to learning and develop yourself we are sure to have a course for
you.
The college also offers short personal and leisure courses starting
throughout the year. Please see our 2010 Course Guide available in June
2010 for further details of courses starting in September.
Teacher Education
These qualifications are for those who wish to teach or train in the post 16
sector. This includes Further Education Colleges, Higher Education Colleges,
Evening Centres, Community Centres, Training Institutions and Workbased
Training.
Skills for Life
Skills for Life courses are designed to help you improve your maths and
English. These courses are free and will help you work on areas such as:
Using money, budgeting, percentages, VAT, maths related to work or
hobbies, reading, writing, job applications.
You can improve your skills from a basic level and work towards a nationally
recognised qualification – Certificate in Adult Literacy and/or Certificate in
Adult Numeracy. The courses are offered at both the Westbank and Ormskirk
Campuses, daytime and evening.
Individual Learning Plans for Students with
Learning Difficulties & Disabilities
The curriculum is designed to provide education & training for a wide range
of adults and young people with learning difficulties &/or learning disabilities.
Individual Learning Plans are made up from a choice of subjects at Pre-Entry
and Entry Level.
In college we have students with Severe Learning Difficulties and students
with Moderate to Mild Learning Difficulties.
There are a variety of courses available including, IT, Catering, Personal &
Social Development, Performing Arts etc.
Each student is seen as an individual with their own individual learning needs
and will be interviewed and assessed to ascertain which course is suitable.
