want to go to university, into employment, or<br />

are already in employment, we are sure to<br />

At our July 2008 Ofsted inspection, we were<br />

praised for our outstanding student support<br />

and good teaching and learning, making us an<br />

excellent choice for your studies.<br />

As a student in 2010, you will join us as we<br />

develop our brand new £42.8m town centre<br />

campus in Skelmersdale offering state of the<br />

art education and training facilities fit for the<br />

21st century. The new campus will open in<br />

September 2011.<br />

We offer a variety of daytime, evening<br />

and work based learning courses for<br />

adults who are looking to come to<br />

college, all in a friendly, welcoming<br />

environment. Adults may enrol onto a<br />

variety of full time courses, however<br />

as many of these courses are<br />

designed for 16-18 year olds you may<br />

wish to study a more adult orientated<br />

programme such as Access to Higher<br />

Education.<br />

How to Apply<br />

• Decide which course you would like to study at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk<br />

College.<br />

Confirm if you wish to study for an Apprenticeship, full time course or both.<br />

• Complete the application form online or alternatively call 01695 52300 for<br />

an application form to be sent to you.<br />

Submit your application.<br />

• When we have received your application we will invite you to an interview<br />

in college with a course adviser and subject to successful interview will<br />

offer you a conditional place at our college.<br />

• Once you have accepted your offer of a place you will be invited to college<br />

for a curriculum day. These days help you become more familiar with the<br />

college and your new place of study, you will get to meet your tutor and<br />

new friends, view facilities and find out more about college life. You will<br />

also complete an initial assessment.<br />

Your new course will start in early September.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

For students aged 19+ formal entry qualifications are not always necessary.<br />

You will be asked to attend a college interview where we will discuss your<br />

previous experience and skills. You will also be asked to complete an initial<br />

assessment to make sure you start at the level to suit you.<br />

We offer a variety of courses for adults who are looking to come to college,<br />

all offered in a friendly, welcoming environment.<br />

choices for you, we hold advice and guidance events of the first Wednesday<br />

of each month (term-time only) 4.30pm-7pm at the Westbank Campus,<br />

The new college campus in Skelmersdale will boast well-equipped<br />

study rooms and an IT suite with internet and email access,<br />

alongside our commercial bistro, coffee shop, salons<br />

and performance studio.<br />

creating a hotspot learning<br />

Westbank Campus<br />

Our Westbank Campus is a friendly campus near to Skelmersdale town<br />

centre that is easy to access, no matter how you travel.<br />

The campus has recently benefited from extensive refurbishment of the<br />

student areas including R Space refectory and common room and the<br />

poolside lounge. There has been investment to our Hair, Barbering, Beauty<br />

and Holistic Therapy Salons and we have spent £750K on IT, making us an<br />

excellent choice for your studies.<br />

Ormskirk Campus<br />

Our Ormskirk Campus located in the centre of the historic market town of<br />

Ormskirk, offers a perfect place in which to study. Students studying at this<br />

campus frequently comment on the warm, friendly community atmosphere,<br />

you will find it easy to make friends here.<br />

Students studying here in 2010 can expect brand new IT facilities, relaxing<br />

social space, including our coffee shop Cafeology, and welcoming teaching<br />

and support services.<br />

The Ormskirk Campus is also the base of our Business Solutions<br />

Department. If you are employed and looking to study an NVQ qualification,<br />

or perhaps you are interested in an Apprenticeship programme, please<br />

West Lancashire Construction Academy<br />

The West Lancashire Construction Academy is our £2.3m purpose built<br />

Construction, Building Services & Engineering Skills Centre that offers<br />

you experience and skills in a quality learning environment preparing you<br />

perfectly for a career in the industry.<br />

“The Street” runs through the centre of the academy leading off into each of<br />

the main construction areas of Bricklaying, Carpentry & Joinery, Electrical<br />

Installation, Motor Vehicle Engineering, Plastering, Performing Engineering<br />

Operations and Plumbing & Gas. You can also take advantage of a cup of<br />

coffee or grab a bite to eat or perhaps relax in between studies in “The Loft”.<br />

Learner Zone<br />

The Learner Zones are available at all Campuses. These vibrant areas of<br />

study are available to all students on a drop-in basis including before and<br />

after lessons and in college holidays.<br />

Resources include: new PC’s with internet access, books, journals and multimedia<br />

facilities. Staff are always on hand to assist with IT skills, research and<br />

preparation for assignments.<br />

Places to Eat and Relax<br />

Our students can relax and unwind in one of our newly refurbished eating<br />

areas:<br />

The Loft, West Lancashire Construction Academy<br />

Whether you are looking for a quick bite to eat or a freshly prepared hot<br />

meal* there is something available for you. You can choose from a selection<br />

of dishes, sandwiches, snacks, drinks and confectionery (vegetarian options<br />

also available).<br />

Fitness Factors – Sports Complex<br />

For students who are interested in keeping fit, Fitness Factors Sports<br />

Complex is available at our Westbank Campus and offers a fully equipped<br />

gym housing a variety of equipment including free weights, jogging, cycling<br />

and rowing machines with staff available to provide fitness programmes.<br />

There are group activities on offer such as badminton, football, netball,<br />

volleyball or swimming where you can keep fit whilst having fun.<br />

Relaxation techniques are also available in the Sports Injuries Clinics for<br />

overused and tired muscles or perhaps you would like to unwind in our sauna<br />

and steam room.<br />

The Phoenix Theatre<br />

The Phoenix Theatre is the college’s performing arts venue. For details of<br />

Apprenticeships for Adults<br />

If I am over 25 can I enrol on an Apprenticeship?<br />

Yes, Adult Apprenticeships are available for those currently working for 16<br />

hours or more.<br />

What are the benefits?<br />

Apprenticeships enable you to improve your literacy and numeracy skills<br />

as well as being assessed (in the workplace) in a practical way.<br />

To gain a nationally recognised qualification at level 2 or 3.<br />

What do I do next?<br />

Foundation Degrees<br />

Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that combine<br />

academic study with workplace learning. They have been designed jointly by<br />

universities, colleges and employers, and are available in a range of workrelated<br />

Part-Time <strong>Course</strong>s for Adults<br />

We offer a variety of part time courses for adults.<br />

If you would like to progress in your current job, learn and acquire new skills<br />

or return to learning and develop yourself we are sure to have a course for<br />

you.<br />

The college also offers short personal and leisure courses starting<br />

throughout the year. Please see our 2010 <strong>Course</strong> Guide available in June<br />

2010 for further details of courses starting in September.<br />

Teacher Education<br />

These qualifications are for those who wish to teach or train in the post 16<br />

sector. This includes Further Education Colleges, Higher Education Colleges,<br />

Evening Centres, Community Centres, Training Institutions and Workbased<br />

Training.<br />

Skills for Life<br />

Skills for Life courses are designed to help you improve your maths and<br />

English. These courses are free and will help you work on areas such as:<br />

Using money, budgeting, percentages, VAT, maths related to work or<br />

hobbies, reading, writing, job applications.<br />

You can improve your skills from a basic level and work towards a nationally<br />

recognised qualification – Certificate in Adult Literacy and/or Certificate in<br />

Adult Numeracy. The courses are offered at both the Westbank and Ormskirk<br />

Campuses, daytime and evening.<br />

Individual Learning Plans for Students with<br />

Learning Difficulties & Disabilities<br />

The curriculum is designed to provide education & training for a wide range<br />

of adults and young people with learning difficulties &/or learning disabilities.<br />

Individual Learning Plans are made up from a choice of subjects at Pre-Entry<br />

and Entry Level.<br />

In college we have students with Severe Learning Difficulties and students<br />

with Moderate to Mild Learning Difficulties.<br />

There are a variety of courses available including, IT, Catering, Personal &<br />

Social Development, Performing Arts etc.<br />

Each student is seen as an individual with their own individual learning needs<br />

and will be interviewed and assessed to ascertain which course is suitable.<br />
