In <strong>FY</strong> 2009, the Authority continued the safe driving program to reduce the Authority's liability for preventable accidents<br />

<strong>and</strong> to ensure that employees who drive Authority vehicles as a primary job responsibility learn best practices. The<br />

program comprises three components: defensive driving; attitudinal dynamics classes; <strong>and</strong> the smith systems on-the-road<br />

driving practical. The smith systems approach is considered one of the best training programs in the transportation<br />

industry.<br />

The Authority continued its self-managed career development program in <strong>FY</strong> 2009. Supervisors <strong>and</strong> managers attended<br />

workshops <strong>and</strong> completed online assessments to gain an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of how to manage employee career development<br />

<strong>and</strong> the necessity for effective coaching <strong>and</strong> mentoring. Employees attended orientation sessions, completed online<br />

assessments, one-on-one counseling sessions <strong>and</strong> workshops to provide insight into their individual skills <strong>and</strong> abilities. In<br />

<strong>FY</strong> 2009, career exploration was added to the program as a new feature that provided guidance on how to effect career<br />

development in a progressively, step-by-step manner when considering, researching <strong>and</strong> answering questions to make<br />

the best career decisions.<br />

Other professional development training classes offered to employees included grammar <strong>and</strong> business writing,<br />

introductory Spanish, workforce diversity, equal employment opportunity, National Associations of Sewer Service<br />

Companies certification, supervisory skills for non-supervisors, communicating with difficult people, customer service, <strong>and</strong><br />

ethics in the workplace. Employees also learned skills <strong>and</strong> competencies for Microsoft office software such as Outlook<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Proj</strong>ect.<br />

Specialized classes were also provided for departments with unique skill needs. In the operations departments,<br />

employees attended classes on mechanical screens, MAXIMO maintenance management system, scum pumps,<br />

actuators, drywall, basic plumbing, l<strong>and</strong>scaping, introduction to electricity, <strong>and</strong> nitrification/denitrification facilities upgrade.<br />

To ensure maximum efficiency of its workforce, the Department of Wastewater Treatment continued to offer duty station<br />

training for wastewater treatment operators. Employees completed self-study <strong>and</strong> classroom training on 60 duty stations<br />

to become competent in all three process areas.<br />

In support of the Authority's comprehensive safety program, the Authority continued to offer safety training to meet<br />

regulatory <strong>and</strong> job-specific needs. Employees attended classes on CPR/First-Aid with emphasis on using the Automated<br />

External Defibrillator (AED), work zone safety/traffic control, confined space, mobile crane operations, forklift certification,
