the Wangener youth wind orchestra’s director, will<br />
be guest conductor and conducting clinician <strong>at</strong><br />
ONU in February 2011). Festive dinner with hosts.<br />
Overnight in local hotels or youth hostel.<br />

Tuesday, May 31<br />
Bus tour of the gre<strong>at</strong>er Stuttgart area led by Dr.<br />
Walter. Some free time to explore and shop. L<strong>at</strong>e<br />
afternoon rehearsal and evening concert in the<br />
famed Mozarthalle. Concert is shared with the<br />
Jugendmusikschule Wind Orchestra under the b<strong>at</strong>on of<br />
Alexander Beer, ONU Wind Orchestra’s guest conductor<br />
and conducting clinician in February of 2010.<br />
Wednesday, June 1<br />
Choice of tours and visits to a wide selection of<br />
museums and exhibitions including the Porsche<br />
Museum, the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the Hegel<br />
Haus and four different art museums. Shared<br />
festive meal in the early evening in one of<br />
Stuttgart’s famous Biergartens followed by a<br />
<strong>at</strong>tendance <strong>at</strong> a performance by the Stuttgarter<br />
Ballett Company fe<strong>at</strong>uring Maurice Ravel’s Bolero.<br />
Thursday, June 2<br />
Depart for Frankfurt. Fly back to Chicago,<br />
and travel by bus back to Ada.<br />

In May 2011, the <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Northern</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> Wind Orchestra will<br />
travel to southern Germany for<br />
a nine-day concert tour.<br />
The ONU Wind Orchestra travels to Germany next<br />
May for a nine-day tour, including five concerts in<br />
four cities in southern Germany (Amberg, Laupheim,<br />
Wangen and Stuttgart)<br />
and sight-seeing visits<br />
to Würzburg, Nürnberg,<br />
Dachau, Ulm, and the<br />
Alps. At each concert site,<br />

band will host the Wind<br />
Stuttgart<br />
Orchestra. Four of the<br />
Laupheim<br />
overnights are with host<br />
families, and four are in<br />

Traveling with the Wind Orchestra will be Dr. Thomas<br />
Hunt, director of the ONU Wind Orchestra, and his<br />
wife, Angelika; Dr. James Walter, ONU professor of<br />
modern languages; Dr. Bob Ruble, ONU vice president<br />
for financial affairs, and his wife, Marilou; and Dale<br />
Laukhuf, ONU lecturer in music, and his wife, Marcia.<br />
The cost for the trip is $1,395 per<br />
traveler and each Wind Orchestra<br />
member is seeking sponsors to<br />
help with the expenses. Sponsors<br />
contributing $40 or more to an<br />
individual student will receive<br />
frequent e-mail upd<strong>at</strong>es during<br />
the trip, the new Wind Orchestra<br />
2009-10 Concert Highlights CD, a CD of the<br />
Germany tour program, and many thanks from the<br />
sponsored student.<br />

Monday, May 23<br />
Evening rehearsal <strong>at</strong> ONU<br />
Tuesday, May 24<br />
Morning rehearsal <strong>at</strong> ONU. Bus to Chicago for<br />
evening flight to Frankfurt.<br />
Wednesday, May 25<br />
Arrive in the morning in Frankfurt, travel by bus to<br />
Amberg with lunch stop in Würzburg and a tour of the<br />
medieval fortress of Marienberg. Supper in Amberg<br />
with a short rehearsal in the evening. Overnights are<br />
hosted by families of students from the Amberger<br />
Musisches Gymnasium, a high school for 750<br />
students, all of whom study music in some form.<br />
Thursday, May 26<br />
Explore historic Nürnberg.<br />

professor of modern<br />
languages, provides a<br />
guided tour followed by<br />
free time to explore.<br />
Evening concert in the<br />
beautiful Kongreg<strong>at</strong>ionssaal<br />
concert hall in Amberg.<br />
Friday, May 27<br />
Short early-morning farewell concert (pep-bandish)<br />
in the courtyard of the musical high school. Depart<br />
for Laupheim. Short tour of the concentr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
camp in Dachau on the way. The evening concert<br />
in the Kulturhaus in Laupheim is opened by<br />
the Laupheimer Stadtkappelle, an outstanding<br />
municipal band whose members are hosting the<br />
Wind Orchestra for the two nights in Laupheim.<br />
Russian conductor Rustam Keil, the Stadtkappelle’s<br />
music director, will guest conduct the Wind<br />
Orchestra’s on-campus concert in November 2010.<br />
S<strong>at</strong>urday, May 28<br />
Champagne breakfast with the mayor of Laupheim,<br />
visit to the Laupheim Museum. Afternoon tour of<br />
Ulm with visit to the famed c<strong>at</strong>hedral and time for<br />
exploring and shopping (or enjoying downtime in<br />
Laupheim). Evening party with the Laupheimer<br />
Stadtkappelle whose members include a very good<br />
jazz combo. ONU students are invited to join in.
