Evening concert will be opened by the Wangener
Youth Wind Band, four members of which attended
ONU Summer Music Camp in 2010. (Reiner Hobe,
the Wangener youth wind orchestra’s director, will
be guest conductor and conducting clinician at
ONU in February 2011). Festive dinner with hosts.
Overnight in local hotels or youth hostel.
Monday, May 30
Free day in the Alps
(Garmisch, Appenzell
or Lake Constance).
Travel in the evening
to Stuttgart, where the
next three nights will
be spent in a youth
hostel.
Tuesday, May 31
Bus tour of the greater Stuttgart area led by Dr.
Walter. Some free time to explore and shop. Late
afternoon rehearsal and evening concert in the
famed Mozarthalle. Concert is shared with the
Jugendmusikschule Wind Orchestra under the baton of
Alexander Beer, ONU Wind Orchestra’s guest conductor
and conducting clinician in February of 2010.
Wednesday, June 1
Choice of tours and visits to a wide selection of
museums and exhibitions including the Porsche
Museum, the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the Hegel
Haus and four different art museums. Shared
festive meal in the early evening in one of
Stuttgart’s famous Biergartens followed by a
attendance at a performance by the Stuttgarter
Ballett Company featuring Maurice Ravel’s Bolero.
Thursday, June 2
Depart for Frankfurt. Fly back to Chicago,
and travel by bus back to Ada.

In May 2011, the Ohio Northern
University Wind Orchestra will
travel to southern Germany for
a nine-day concert tour.
The ONU Wind Orchestra travels to Germany next
May for a nine-day tour, including five concerts in
four cities in southern Germany (Amberg, Laupheim,
Wangen and Stuttgart)
and sight-seeing visits
to Würzburg, Nürnberg,
Dachau, Ulm, and the
Alps. At each concert site,

band will host the Wind
Stuttgart
Orchestra. Four of the
Laupheim
overnights are with host
families, and four are in
youth hostels.

Traveling with the Wind Orchestra will be Dr. Thomas
Hunt, director of the ONU Wind Orchestra, and his
wife, Angelika; Dr. James Walter, ONU professor of
modern languages; Dr. Bob Ruble, ONU vice president
for financial affairs, and his wife, Marilou; and Dale
Laukhuf, ONU lecturer in music, and his wife, Marcia.
The cost for the trip is $1,395 per
traveler and each Wind Orchestra
member is seeking sponsors to
help with the expenses. Sponsors
contributing $40 or more to an
individual student will receive
frequent e-mail updates during
the trip, the new Wind Orchestra
2009-10 Concert Highlights CD, a CD of the
Germany tour program, and many thanks from the
sponsored student.

ITINERARY
Monday, May 23
Evening rehearsal at ONU
Tuesday, May 24
Morning rehearsal at ONU. Bus to Chicago for
evening flight to Frankfurt.
Wednesday, May 25
Arrive in the morning in Frankfurt, travel by bus to
Amberg with lunch stop in Würzburg and a tour of the
medieval fortress of Marienberg. Supper in Amberg
with a short rehearsal in the evening. Overnights are
hosted by families of students from the Amberger
Musisches Gymnasium, a high school for 750
students, all of whom study music in some form.
Thursday, May 26
Explore historic Nürnberg.
Dr. James Walter, ONU
professor of modern
languages, provides a
guided tour followed by
free time to explore.
Evening concert in the
beautiful Kongregationssaal
concert hall in Amberg.
Friday, May 27
Short early-morning farewell concert (pep-bandish)
in the courtyard of the musical high school. Depart
for Laupheim. Short tour of the concentration
camp in Dachau on the way. The evening concert
in the Kulturhaus in Laupheim is opened by
the Laupheimer Stadtkappelle, an outstanding
municipal band whose members are hosting the
Wind Orchestra for the two nights in Laupheim.
Russian conductor Rustam Keil, the Stadtkappelle’s
music director, will guest conduct the Wind
Orchestra’s on-campus concert in November 2010.
Saturday, May 28
Champagne breakfast with the mayor of Laupheim,
visit to the Laupheim Museum. Afternoon tour of
Ulm with visit to the famed cathedral and time for
exploring and shopping (or enjoying downtime in
Laupheim). Evening party with the Laupheimer
Stadtkappelle whose members include a very good
jazz combo. ONU students are invited to join in.
