statistical data and presents available quantitative <strong>in</strong>formation from national and <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

sources.<br />

o Section five provides a brief outl<strong>in</strong>e of Algerian literature, music and film <strong>in</strong> order to give some<br />

cultural background to <strong>the</strong> resident population.<br />

o Section six <strong>the</strong>n considers a range of key issues fac<strong>in</strong>g this population; asylum, undocumented<br />

status, employment, isolation and contacts with Algeria.<br />

o The f<strong>in</strong>al sections detail all references and websites cited and provide more <strong>in</strong>formation to follow up<br />

<strong>in</strong> each area.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>guide</strong> is based on <strong>the</strong> author’s own DPhil research, carried out between May 2000<br />

and September 2001. This rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> most significant research undertaken with <strong>the</strong> Algerian population <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> and it is supplemented, for this <strong>guide</strong>, with follow up work carried out <strong>in</strong> January and February 2003.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>volved primary research with Algerian migrants and a range of key <strong>in</strong>formants <strong>in</strong> addition to collat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

data from available NGO reports and secondary literature sources. This <strong>guide</strong> is updated at regular <strong>in</strong>tervals<br />

to reflect key policy changes and <strong>in</strong>corporate new data.<br />
