Intentions
The Kingdom of God Is at Hand!
Mark, most likely the earliest of the four evangelists, tells
us in today's Gospel that the first preaching that Jesus
ever did proclaimed the fact that God's kingdom was at
hand. What does this really mean And how does it apply
to us
In Jesus' day, most hearers as well as his disciples assumed
that God's kingdom being at hand meant that the end of the
present world was imminent and that God would be coming
to establish his kingdom by punishing all evil-doers and
abolishing injustice, suffering, and even death itself and
bringing about a paradise in which all the faithful live in a
joyful and intimate relationship with God.
Obviously, that didn't happen although some day, at Christ's
Second Coming, that is exactly what will happen. Despite
those who claim that 2012 will mark the end of the present
era, we really have no idea when this will occur. All
Christians do hope for this, of course. After all, we pray for
it whenever we recite the Lord's Prayer: "May your kingdom
come!"

Ministers' Renewal Commitment Workshop - All EME's,
lectors, commentators and greeters who have not attended
the January 14th schedule are asked to attend the next
workshop on January 28th from 9:30 A.M. - 11:30 A.M. in
Moriarty Hall.
Saint Anne Scripture Study -- Have you ever wished that
you knew more about the Bible If so, then please consider
attending our Scripture Study class that meets in the
conference room of the Saint Anne rectory every Wednesday
evening from 7 to 9 p.m. We are now exploring the Book
of Jeremiah. Jeremiah is one of the most powerful prophets
in the Old Testament! Bibles supplied, or bring your own!
But since it hasn't happened yet, and Jesus spoke those
words two thousand years ago, what does He mean when
he states that the kingdom is very near ("at hand") The
answer is found in the idea that the kingdom of God, as
Jesus states elsewhere, is within us. That is to say, when
Jesus went to the cross for our sins and then rose from the
dead so that we might rise with Him, He was beginning the
process by which we might work with Him in establishing
that kingdom, which will only be completed and fully
realized when He comes again. In that sense, the kingdom
of God was truly at hand for His hearers. Its inauguration
was only three short years away.
What must we do to claim a share in this kingdom and help
to bring it about Jesus tells us that for our part we must
"repent and believe." How many of us can honestly say that
we have completely repented Although repentance means
to turn away from sin and give ourselves wholly to God, it
is very possible that most of us have areas in our lives that
we have not yet turned over to God in a radically thorough
way. It is easy to comfort ourselves with the idea that God
will forgive us. But if we wish to allow God's kingdom to be
established within us, if we wish to live out our baptismal
vocation to share in Christ's kingship by striving to build up
this kingdom through bringing His presence into our world,
we cannot afford to be complacent in our Christianity. The
message of this first preaching of Jesus remains as urgent
as ever. The kingdom of God that can be established within
us can only come about by applying our own efforts to the
magnificent graces He has already bestowed on us. And
this inner kingdom will find its fullest expression in the outer
kingdom, when He comes again.

Help Stop The Separation of Our Families! Join

Word of Life
The potential benefits of adult stem cell research are very
considerable, since it opens up possibilities for healing
chronic degenerative illnesses by repairing damaged
tissue and restoring its capacity for regeneration. The
improvement that such therapies promise would constitute
a significant step forward in medical science, bringing
fresh hope to sufferers and their families alike. For this
reason, the Church naturally offers her encouragement to
those who are engaged in conducting and supporting
research of this kind, always with the proviso that it be
carried out with due regard for the integral good of the
human person and the common good of society.

Answer to the last Question: Could Bishop Walsh be a Confirmation
sponsor The requirements are that a sponsor be
a practicing Catholic in good standing and at least 16 years
old (though that is flexible). Though he could not be a sponsor
and confer the sacrament at the same time, yes, Bishop
Walsh meets the requirements for a Confirmation sponsor.

A GREAT SUCCESS!
Saint Anne's extends its warmest thanks to
parishioner Mena Wong and her able team of
volunteers for ensuring the wonderful evening of
food and entertainment this past New Year's Eve in
Moriarty Hall. The total amount raised by this fine
fundraiser was just over $ 6,000 !!
