Where everyone is welcome, nobody is perfect, and anything is possible.
Today in worship
This morning we begin our new sermon series “Live Wire: Church, Family, Friends“
Vic Pentz will preach at 8:45, 10:00 and 11:15 a.m. The scripture for today’s sermon,
“Void if Detached (How God Works through His Church),” is Ephesians 1:3-11, 18-23.
In all three services this morning, we celebrate the sacrament of baptism. Baptism
of infants is one way we look to the future. As we welcome these children into our
fellowship, we also pledge that we will nurture their faith in the hope that they will one
day profess their own faith in Jesus Christ.
Today in the Sanctuary services, we will hear from Rev. Chad Hale, Founder and
Executive Director of Georgia Avenue Community Ministry, a cooperative ministry that
provides food to those in need in a way that affirms dignity and builds community.
TODAY IS veteran’s Day
This morning we honor our nation’s veterans, past and present, and invite you to join with us as
we lift them in prayer. Refer to pages 14-15 of our bulletin for a complete list of our active duty
service men and women, and include them in your prayer life this morning and throughout
the week.
BAPTISM SUNDAY | JUSTICE SUNDAY
This 18th C.
hymn affirms the
Kingship of Christ
and calls on all
creatures to crown
Jesus Christ
“Lord of
all”. In
scripture,
one’s name
represents
the essentials of
one’s character.
When we praise
the name of Jesus,
we acknowledge
who Jesus is and
our dependence
on him. Jesus is
our peace, our
hope, our friend,
our Savior.
Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.
In his short life,
Moses Hogan
arranged and
published dozens
of traditional
spirituals. Every
Time I Feel the
Spirit encourages
the people of God
to pray together
in community —
with joy!
This hymn
is one of
12 hymns
written by
Englishman
Samuel S. Stone
based on the
Apostles’ Creed.
Stone wanted to
assert that unity
within the Church
rested solely
on Jesus Christ,
its head. What
does it mean for
you to be part of
the Church, the
people of God
Offering Our Gifts
Every Time I Feel the Spirit .................................................. arr. Moses Hogan
The Chancel Choir
Stephen McCluskey, Soloist
Refrain:
Every time I feel the spirit
Movin’ in my heart I will pray
Every time I feel the spirit
Movin’ in my heart I will pray
On the mountains my Lord spoke
Out of His mouth came fire and smoke
Down in the valley, on my knees,
Asked my Lord have mercy please. (Refrain)
Jordan river, chilly and cold, chills the body not the soul.
All around me looked so fine, asked my Lord if all was mine. (Refrain)
Ain’t but one train on this track, runs to heaven and right back.
St. Peter waitin’ at the gate, said come on sinner, don’t be late. (Refrain)
*Hymn of Thanksgiving
Holy, Holy, Holy .......................................................................................... NICAEA
Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee!
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Amen.
Welcoming Justice: God’s Movement Toward
Beloved Community
by Charles Marsh
It was not that long ago that African Americans and other
minorities were excluded from many spheres of American
public life. We have seen remarkable progress in recent
decades toward Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of beloved community. But this is
not only because of the activism and sacrifice of a certain generation of civil rights
leaders. It happened because God was on the move.
