Subglottic Secretion Drainage Tubes • Are slightly stiffer & the cuffs are still not 100% effective • 48% failure rate – due to prolapse of mucosa into the suction port [Dragoumanis et al, 2007] • Design is improving rapidly; now 3 rd generation • Highly cost-effective • They don’t yet ‘eliminate’ VAP, but may be the most effective single non-antimicrobial intervention
