ORISTANO – PULA- CAGLIARI<br />

This morning you journey <strong>through</strong> the<br />

Campidano Valley, which was the bread<br />

basket of ancient Carthage to the<br />

Phoenician city of Pula, before heading<br />

to Cagliari, the main city in Sardinia.<br />

Cagliari is spread out over seven hills<br />

(Sant'Elia, Bonaria, Monte Urpinu,<br />

Castello, Monte Claro, Tuvixeddu and<br />

San Michele) and has Phoenician-Punic<br />

origins. If time allows you may be able to<br />

visit the old town before checking into<br />

your accommodation.<br />

will delight even the most discerning of travellers. Tuscany, rich in<br />

history, traditions, art and culture is bordered by the Apennine<br />

BOLSENA - VOLSINI HILLS Today you<br />

have a full day sightseeing in the<br />

picturesque southern Tuscan Volsini Hills.<br />

You visit Pitigliano, also known as ‘Little<br />

Jerusalem’, a stunning medieval town<br />

dramatically perched above high cliffs.<br />

Many Estruscan tombs dot the cliff face<br />

and the valley below. You will have the<br />

opportunity to visit a tomb and the<br />

interesting little museum in the town. Next<br />

you visit the little town of Sovana, listed as<br />

‘one of the most beautiful villages in Italy’<br />

and the birthplace of Hildebrand (c1020-<br />

85). The last stop of the day is the little<br />

town of Sorano, well known for its cheeses,<br />

sausages and crafts of leather, wooden<br />

artifacts and pottery.<br />

BOLSENA – ORVIETO –<br />

MONTEPULCIANO<br />

Following breakfast you leave Bolsena for<br />

the ancient hill town<br />

of Orvieto and its<br />

beautiful cathedral.<br />

Perched high on a<br />

tuffa butte the worn<br />

cliff-face is riddled<br />

with ancient tunnels<br />

from Etruscan times to ‘recent’ history.<br />

Travelling on you visit Montepulciano, a<br />

town famous for its wine, olive oil and<br />

pecorino cheese.<br />

Day 5 Wednesday 20 June<br />

MONTEPULCIANO – PIENZA – SIENA -<br />

FLORENCE<br />

Pienza is the fist stop on your journey to<br />

Florence. Tucked away behind its fortress<br />

like walls is medieval and renaissance<br />

perfection. Pope Pius II hoped to make<br />

this town a creation of palaces, churches &<br />

Piazza but unfortunately he died before<br />

this could be fully realised. Siena the<br />

‘Jewel of medieval Tuscany’ and whose<br />

medieval centre houses a profusion of<br />

churches, museums and majestic buildings.<br />

Florence, the Renaissance city and<br />

home to Michelangelo's many works of<br />

art. It is a city filled with art, history and<br />

culture with so many ‘must see’ things to<br />

do you will be spoilt for choice.<br />

Today you have a free day to explore this<br />

FLORENCE - LUCCA – MONTEROSSO<br />

Today you journey to the Italian Riviera. On<br />

the way you visit Lucca, whose ancient<br />

ramparts ring the town, was the birthplace<br />

of Giacomo<br />

Puccini (1858-<br />

1924).<br />

Monterosso is<br />

the largest of the<br />

five villages in<br />

Cinque Terre<br />

and your base<br />

for the next two<br />

nights.<br />

dates back to<br />

Byzantine times. Its streets wind around a<br />

Norman look-out tower, down steep hills<br />

into orange and olive groves and on into<br />

CINQUE TERRE<br />

Traditionally accessible only by sea, mule<br />

tracks or train, the villages of Monterosso,<br />

continue to cling to their ancient traditional<br />

ways making a living from fishing or<br />

farming the steep slopes that yield the<br />

sweet sciacchetra’ wine. You will spend a<br />

pleasant day sightseeing around this<br />

spectacular area.<br />

Genoese influence. The centre of Bastia<br />

-Place St Nicolas, brims with lively cafes<br />

and chic shops.<br />

Today we make our way <strong>through</strong> vineyards,<br />

olive groves and chestnut forests<br />

to the high country to Corte, the former<br />

Corsican capital of the independence<br />

leader Pasquale Paoli (1725-1807) and<br />

home to Corsica’s only university. You<br />

proceed to Ajaccio, Corsica’s main city<br />

and birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte<br />

(1769-1821)<br />

AJACCIO - BONIFACIO (FERRY) -<br />

SARDINIA<br />

Continuing your journey south past the<br />

Neolithic sites of Filitosa and Propiano to<br />

Here you take the ferry and head for the<br />

Italian island of Sardinia, making Arzachena<br />

your base for the next two<br />

CAPRERA AND COSTA SMERALDA<br />

Today we visit the Costa Smeralda and<br />

island of Caprera. The Italian and South<br />

American hero Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-<br />

82) retired to wind swept Caprera for<br />

peace and contemplation. By contrast, the<br />

nearby beautiful Costa Smeralda is the<br />

playground for the world’s rich and famous.<br />

Day 14 Friday 29 June<br />

ARZACHENA – SASSARI – ALGHERO<br />

After breakfast you journey on <strong>through</strong><br />

rural areas strewn with neolithic conical<br />

rock towers known as Nuraghi. Built in the<br />

mid to late Bronz Age there are over 7,000<br />

of these structures to be seen on the<br />

island. Along the way you visit the 11 th<br />

century Pisan church of Trinita’ di<br />

Saccargia before arriving in Sassari,<br />

where you stop for lunch. You then<br />

continue on<br />

Day 16 Sunday 1 July<br />

ALGHERO–BOSA-THARROS-ORISTANO<br />

A full day of sightseeing awaits you todady.<br />

You begin at Cape Caccia renowned for the<br />

underground labyrinth of mysterious caves<br />

discovered in 1700. The most famous one<br />

is Grotta di Nettuno (2500 m long) that can<br />

be reached by sea or on ground climbing<br />

the 656 steps of Escala del Cabirol that<br />

lead to the cave. There is a beautiful<br />

transparent lake (La Marmora) with two<br />

small sandy beaches just at its entrance.<br />

Capo Caccia is one of<br />

the wildest places in<br />

Sardinia. Inland,<br />

there is an<br />

extraordinary natural<br />

reserve established<br />

by Italian Botanic<br />

Association in 1970<br />

and covering nearly<br />

three thousand<br />

hectares. You carry<br />

on along the coast to<br />

Bosa for lunch.<br />

Following lunch you visit the Phoenician<br />

ruins of Tharros and the neaby tiny 5 th<br />

century Byzantine church of San Giovanni<br />

in Sinis. You then proceed to Oristano,<br />

home of the 14 th century ruler Sardinian<br />

ruler Eleonora D’Arborea.<br />
