Tours Of Historic Church
Edward Arthur Guinness (1840-1915), later
known as Lord Ardilaun and the greatgrandson
of the founder of Guinness’ Brewery
founded the church. It was designed by the
architect George C. Ashlin and has some
wonderful architectural features notably the
perfect symmetry of the overall design, the
Cumberland roofing slates, granite walls with
limestone dressings and the ornamental
architraves of the doors. The materials for the
building were mainly sourced in Ireland and it
is described as ‘early English’ with a cruciform
shape. The stained glass windows are of note. It
was formerly situated on the northern edge of
the estate of Lord Ardilaun the bulk of which is
now St. Anne’s Park. Guided tours of the local
church founded by Lord Ardilaun and
designed by George C Ashlin at 15:00, 16:00
and 17:00. The church is not usually open to
the public other than for church services, on
special occasions during the year or by
arrangement.
Aspects Of Irish Postal Heritage
Lunchtime Talks
The Post Office has been at the heart of Irish
life for many generations, and has contributed
to Irish heritage, from stamp design to the
pillar box, yet, has often been overlooked. In
this series of short lunchtime lectures, three
speakers will introduce different aspects of that
heritage:
Monday 20th August: 'From Proclamation to
Post Box - The Post Office in Irish life' with
Stephen Ferguson, Assistant Secretary of An
Post and Curator of the Museum in the GPO,
who will introduce aspects of Ireland's postal
Letters, Lives
& Liberty
at the An Post Museum
Housed in a purpose-designed space just off the GPO’s busy Public
Office, Letters, Lives and Liberty introduces the story of the Post
Office and how it has helped to shape the development of modern
Ireland. Visitors can read and think about the words printed on the
1916 Proclamation, one of only a few surviving original documents,
and post a card in the Ashworth box, the unique post box
introduced to Ireland by the novelist Anthony Trollope.
Modest in scale, the museum makes use of the latest digital
technology, as well as traditional displays, in order to cover various
aspects of the Post Office story – from the eye-witness accounts of
postal staff on Easter Monday 1916 to the operation of the
Travelling Post Office and from the complexities of stamp design
to the architectural beauty of the GPO itself.
General Post Office, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. Monday – Friday: 10am to 5pm, Saturday: 10am to 4pm. Admission €2.
