On your bike New BMX facility is on ‘track’ WORK has begun on Redditch’s longawaited new BMX track in Arrow Valley Country Park. Contractors began work on the £320,000 national standard track in February following the granting of planning permission late last year. The new facility will include a new competition standard floodlit BMX track and alterations to existing changing rooms to provide clubhouse facilities. It is hoped that the track will be ready later this spring. The track is being funded by Redditch Borough Council and British Cycling. It will be run by Redditch Premiers BMX Club and the Redditch Wheels Project. British Cycling will also be involved in local coaching initiatives. Former BMX world champion and Kidderminster resident Scott Beaumont has been consulted on the design of the 350-metre new track, which it is hoped will draw both experienced and fledgling riders of all ages from across the region. BMX became an Olympic sport for the first time in 2008 and the new track is being seen as as a key factor in attracting potential future champions to the sport. Kevin Cook, Project Development Manager at Redditch Borough Council said, “Redditch developed one of the first recreational tracks in the country back in the 1980s. This new track will see Redditch once again leading the way in providing facilities for this exciting sport, planting us firmly on the national BMX map.” Local cycling contacts Redditch Road and Path Cycling Club www.rrpcc.co.uk Pam Yates Slipstreamer Secretary pamy8s@blueyonder.co.uk Redditch Premiers BMX Club www.redditchpremiers.co.uk Benn Thombs 07988 796872 batbmx25@yahoo.co.uk L to R are Nick Yarworth, British Cycling, Cllr Carole Gandy, Cllr Peter Anderson, and Steve Rooke, Redditch Wheels Project. 20 Redditch matters Redditch Borough Council

Snap up boiler scrappage vouchers REDDITCH residents are being urged to find out if they are eligible for funding towards new, more energyefficient boilers. The national Boiler Scrappage Scheme was launched in January to upgrade household heating systems in England to cut carbon, save money on fuel bills and sustain work for the heating industry. Up to 125,000 households in England with working ‘G-rated’ boilers can apply through the Energy Saving Trust for a voucher which will entitle them to £400 off the price of a new ‘Arated boiler or a renewable heating system like a biomass boiler or a heat pump. As Redditch Matters went to press around 70,000 vouchers worth a total of £28 million were still up for grabs. All the major energy companies which sell and install boilers have now matched the offer, giving householders potentially £800 off the cost of a new efficient boiler. Some manufacturing companies are also offering deals. To find out more about the Boiler Scrappage Scheme and apply for a voucher, visit: www.est.org.uk or call 0800 512 012. Redditch matters 21
